GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Right Pedal For Right Amp

Posted by: Mertay Jul 4 2015, 02:03 PM

Noticed something about this while surfing youtube video's. So here's the first example of a bad match, note that its the official demo and a user of the pedal note's how bad the demo sounds smile.gif the amp they used by the way is considered high-end but still...

I guess they some-what learned their lesson and used a different amp for the (to be released) smaller version of the pedal. Sounded cooler to me;

And finally a non-official demo from a known guy on youtube using a different (probably cheaper) amp with a most probably cheaper guitar;

Side note; Its always the combination of all those video's on how the pedal actually sounds like. There's always a risk (specially with overdrive/dist. producing units) when not trying it with your equipment but me and my friends had good luck till now. Done well or not, watch as many video's as you can to get the best idea for any equipment.

Egad!! The first one sounds like it was miced using the built in mic on the camera? The mic sounds kinda thin and cheap. It's hard to believe it's a real mic? It sure makes the pedal sound a bit thin and brittle IMHO? All those vids make the pedal sound a bit brittle and too "middy" imho. I know they are nice pedals, maybe just poorly recorded sad.gif Here is a quick and dirty tone demo I recorded using a cheap MXR 990 plugged in to an ICICLE xlr to usb recorded directly to quicktime. Very simple setup! smile.gif So I'm certain that you can get pretty decent sound just using a camera and a cheap mic.

No mixer, no daw, no post processing, just straight in

Oh many things to consider actually. First of all stacking overdrives has a limit and one of these overdrives can be the amp as well.

-Vintage sounding amps (Fender, matchless...) to my ears doesn't have hard clipping. Hard clipping doesn't always mean distorion, alone it actually sounds more like a fuzz pedal set to minimum. When played on dirty channel (most almost never uses clean) the overdrive pedals role is more to the volume boost than dirt.

But when added the dirt too, it starts to sound like white noise smile.gif the limit has a very fine line between awesome and disgusting. On the other hand if we have some hard clipping (marshall, laney which is used on the last video I shared), then that "too much" overdrive dirt is used for fat/smooth distortion.

Discarding the added noise, distortion sound can handle stupid amounts of overdrive. So when demoing the same pedal through different amps, I guess people get confused and use the pedal simply wrong or choose the wrong amp.

-A mic. truly makes a positive difference, to me its actually more of a mixing favored positivity as all the depth and dynamics are there compared to an ir. I guess for the last 5 years I've been saying its time to focus on cab. sim.s than tubes when chatting but very little progress has been achieved in that technology.

I can't blame them as its about the customer requests too on where programmers has to focus. On the other hand many people aren't aware on how ancient the ir technology they are using.

I was sorta stunned on how bad their demo sounded. I"d always heard good things about those pedals and the ones I've tried have been great. But wrong mic/amp and poor micing seem to have just ruined it.
