So I've been practicing with two bands lately and my gear is really 'racking' up the mileage. Unfortunately now whenever I turn on my Mesa F-50 and play something on the bass notes, I hear a very audible POP or a cracking noise. You know when you burn wet wood and it makes that popping noise? That's exactly what my amp sounds like. I checked the two 6l6's in the back, both are warm and lit. Looks like they're working...
Anyone have any ideas?

This is the amp: http://www.mesaboogie.com/Product_Info/Out.../F-50/F-50.html

Have you been using it at a very high volume?

Checked the fuse?

[edit] probably wouldn't be the fuse, I misread your post. Have you tried using the line out function to see if you can maybe isolate the problem a little more? Maybe its the speaker?

When I would jam with mine I'd let it run at about halfway on the master volume, sometimes more. I probably don't jam as much as you seem to, but I haven't had any problems with mine.

crackle and pop. I'm positive it's an issue with a broken tube.
It can be like that even if the tubes are lit, if they were fully burned out the sympthom would be no sound at all.

Tube amps shouldn't be moved around too much since it could damage the tubes.

Does the amp makes these noises only when you turn it on? Do they go away later?

I agree with Micke, it's most likely a tube crackling. How long are you having these tubes? Also, the volume pot could be making a small arc, possibly that needs replacement. Also I know it sounds trivial, but check the cables as well.

Yeah I've tried a bunch of different cables, the volume issue persists regardless to length of time in operation. But the amount of popping and the severity of it is in a direction relationship to the volume of the amp it seems. It still has the original 'mesa' labeled tubes...

You guys think it's only the tubes? that'd be great if that was the issue...

I agree with Ivan and Mickem, whenever someone has complained about some popping or crackle in their amp it's usually been the tubes. I'm pretty positive that the problem will go away once you have changed some new tubes in it.

Almost positive. Had the crackle and pop syndrome myself so I recognise your description very well.

Aren't these self biasing? Should say in the manual if you have one.

EDIT: Appearantly they are not. Page 15 in the manual

"Time to change tubes? Just plug our tubes into any one of our amps and you’re DONE. No tech needed. NO bills and no BS about
biasing. And most important: The bias is RIGHT because it can’t change!"

That means I'm good to go right Amp Gurus of GMC? Page 16

Just as I though, I remembered it right after all just read it wrong. happy.gif Yes, it's self biasing. Spray some electric spray on the pins of the old tubes and jack em in and out a couple of times before you put the new ones in!

I prefer german handbooks with pure facts and less drivel laugh.gif

Even my friends solid state amp was crackling (all the time like a frying noise, not just intermittent like your problem).

I had it in the lab and the culprits were the capacitors in the power section of the amp. Electrolytic caps (the ones not shaped like discs, but little cylinders) tend to dry out if they are old. This changes the values of the power supply filters, and the amp for lack of a better term "turns on and off" to the frequency of the wall outlet. Creating the crackle.

This effect can also be achieved if your pushing the amp hard (drawing more current drops voltage), so maybe this is why you hear it on bass notes.

I ordered some new caps (about $5 for all 4), and soldered them in, and it was perfect after. So if the new tubes don't fix your problem, you might want to have the caps checked out for proper readings.

Eitherway, I hope you can get it fixed for cheap dude.
