hey guys

as my guitarteacher told me lately to play a certain riff veeery slowly cause i had big problemes with the AP in that one, i tried it at 8ths at tempo 40, now im able to play this lick very fast and save. Thats the good news
but as i started to like the idea and was impressed on how good this really extreme slow tempo playing improeved my skills, i also used it for scales (ionian scale). before this, i was able to play them ~120bpm 16ths clean, save and relaxed. as i started to play them very slowly, I sometimes just didnt hit a note (exspecially when changing strings), its just my right hand, i pick in a kind of emptyness, because i just dont hit the string, its stupid to explain. It can happen both, up and downstroke but the strange thing is; the slower i play, the more often it happens and i am currently not able to do anything against it
any ideas how to solve the problem that i dont hit the strings randomly (its not a special note that i miss, it can happen everywhere - sometimes it doesnt, sometimes it does - quite annoying ) ???

Hmm.... tricky.

One of my students used to do this as well. The slower he played, the more notes he missed. He was used to play pretty fast, and when I told him to play slow he thought it was so easy/effortless to that he didn't really pay attention to what he was doing... kinda day dreaming while he played And that caused him to miss the notes.

Don't know if this is the case with you though

@marcus: yeah i tend to play kind of fast sometimes, but as i noticed that i made that mistake, when playing slow i play now (since im aware of that problem) 100% concentrated (at least!;) ).
I have no idea what i make wrong - would a video help you??

Since joining GMC and switching to learning through programs like guitarpro which allow you to slow down the music (where previously I learned mostly by ear) I have noticed that when I try to play something at very slow speeds, I screw up alot more than at faster speeds. Personally, I think its because I lose track of the rythm or melody. It happens more often with riffs that are similar to other riffs I know and typically play faster. So far I have dealt with this by just increasing the bpm.

Note: This problem seems to be particularly bad when playing rythm - for instance, I can't play galloping rythm at slower speeds.

I recommend starting with whole notes @ 40bpm, that way you can build your tone and muting technique too. It enables for reaching higher speeds too.

I tried Ivans idea (whole notes 40bpm) and it solved
Im feeling more confident now and im able to play slow now again

practise even slower, so you have full control over the picking motion. Like one note every 2 seconds. WITHOUT a metronome. Really make sure you use the techinque you want.

Maybe the case is closed already with Ivans suggestion. But I have one too since I had a problem my self with sloppy playing. For me that was caused by setting too much of the pick stick out, I pulled it in a bit only letting a bit of the tip stick out and then I flattened my hand to get it closer to the guitar and practiced a lot to get the new technique work for me.
And after a week my accuracy increased a lot. I used to be sloppy and miss strings etc. Now I'm very accurate, sure there are some errors on occacion but I'm safe to say I never miss a string anymore which was one of my purposes to change from the start.

Gaining speed was the other btw.


So try that. Show just a little of the pick and close your hand towards the guitar.
