I think the solution is to keep pick straight with the strings, check out this video for some insights, and if you can, post some video of you playing, so we can really see what's going on.

Sure, this was insightful for me when I first saw it. I think this video is a clear proof that no matter what technique you use, if you practice enough it will sound awesome. It's all about practice, the refinement of the technique goes along the way.
