Morning Guys !

I was thinking about this the other day, when watching the movie, RED, with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman etc.. and I thought about Bruce Willis, 'Man, he's really got better as he's gotten older' and I reckon that when actors get to a certain age they accept that they're getting older and they become a little more human, ditch the ego and give more humility and humour to their roles..

The 2 that spring to mind for me are Bruce Willis: The Whole 9 Yards, RED and Clint Eastwood: The Unforgiven, Gran Torino

What actors do you think have gotten better with age and why ? Give some movies as an example too smile.gif

Jack Nicholson, always good from One Flew Over the Cockoo´s nest to Anger Management and more recently The Departed. But I do think he´s got better with age

and

Javier Bardem - early film for him was Jamon Jamon (alongside Penelope Cruz), which was good but his more recent films like The Sea Inside and No Country for Old Men and Biutiful are better.

spring to mind for actors.

For actresses:

Penelope Cruz, Jamon Jamon one of her early films was good but Volver is much better imho. Priates of the Caribbean is a bit naf but she gets credit from me for Vicky Christina Barcelona - about the only Woody Allen film that is good imo.

Yes, good shout on Nicholson ! I recently saw 'No Country..' for the first time and woah.. what he menacing presence he has in that movie. I read that he's a big fan of heavy metal and he learnt English from AC'DC songs ! cool.gif

I haven't seen those movies, although i've heard of Volver.. Pirates 4 I've yet to see smile.gif

would agree with a lot of the choices so far, one that springs to mind for me is Michael Caine, I watched him in "Harry Brown" not so long ago and thought he was great.

Sandra Bullock was not that great before, and movies were a bit shallow, but in recent years she get to act drams, even got herself the Academy Award smile.gif

Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Denzel Washington..
With aging actor is more mature, experienced, and it is natural to choose those roles that are psychologically more difficult! Imagine Harrison Ford as Indiana,.. today ...

Some actors most definitely get better with age. Some, like Eastwood, create their own opportunities and I think just can afford to be more choosey when picking out which roles they are going to do. Others unfortunately have become shadows of their former selves and are finding it harder to find those great roles.

Jack Nicholson is a good example of this. I LOVE Jack don't get me wrong, and I think he still has some good roles left in him. But it seems his movies of late are basically him playing "Jack" He's not really acting at all... or maybe "Jack" is the act. I don't really know. "As Good As It Gets" was probably the last movie of his that I really enjoyed and I think it's because he was actually playing a character and not some fabrication of himself.

Marlon Brando is another that comes to mind. Brilliant, brilliant career when he was younger... after The Godfather not so much. But because he made such a name for himself he could get away with it. Great actor but poor choices. Harrison Ford, although it pains me to say it, falls into this catagory too. Has made some pretty horrible movies of late... but I still love him.

As for actors who have gotten better well I agree with most that have been mentioned although I disagree with Nicolas Cage. I think his recent financial troubles has forced him to take roles that just waste his talent. Few other "better with agers" though would be Leo Dicaprio, not exactly old I know but he has matured as an actor and has given some amazing performances such as The Departed, Inception, Gangs of New York. Brad Pitt, I am not a fan but since he got over his "pretty boy" stage he's shown he can really act (Snatch, Fight Club) Johnny Depp has shown he can pretty much do whatever he puts his mind too. Liam Neeson has had a boost in his career too lately. Although I've always loved him smile.gif

And of course you have your Morgan Freemans, Alan Rickmans, Daniel Day Lewis's, who it doesn't really matter what they do they are just amazing.

Very good points Rok, and I know exactly what you mean with actors just doing 'their thing' where they're almost playing a version of theirselves.. Pacino, as much as I love him in Scent Of A Woman for one, can be accused of playing the Al Pacino scary guy routine a lot.. but then again I think the writers and directors want that from them again and again.

Yes.. definitely agree about Depp and Pitt.. I just love the Ocean's trilogy.. the interplay between Pitt and Clooney is worth it alone ! smile.gif

Yes Pacino is guilty of it too... I hate how Hollywood has kind of type cast some of the greatest actors ever.

Hollywood in general I think may be a shadow of it's former self... I mean there hasn't been an original idea in ages. I guess it's hard for actors to be fresh when their own business is just as bad.

Honestly, aren't you suppose to get with age? Since you'll be more experienced, you've learned from your mistakes (hopefully).

One would think so but it's not always the case... like I say... growing old is inevitable, growing up is optional smile.gif
