Hey jim!

welcome to a new MTP month (kind of late uh ?), please check the june thread, you can find a summary there on your past assigments.

You are pretty much done with the heavy rhythmic part, i enjoyed your takes a lot and we will get back to that funky lesson, but for now record from 0:00 to 0:40 of the following lesson, i wanna see that part first cause now we have to start fine tuning the little details

Hey Adrian.
This is a cool lesson (the link was broken, but no worries, I found it.)
Hate to have to admit it, but my right hand is going to have big trouble with this. I'll record it slowly to make sure I've got everything down and then work on bringing it up to tempo. At 160 bpm, my hand is just too slow. (Hey, Slowhand, maybe I can use that as my stage name. ... oh, wait a minute, it's already taken. )

I hope all is well. It's a great night tonight to be playing guitar. I just finished up a big project at work and the sky seems blue again. Gotta start something new tomorrow.

Well, I gave it a shot anyway...
This tune should be more like a level 6 man! It's easy to memorize, and easy to fret the notes, but, man, it is fast. I went ahead and recorded it at slow tempo cause it will be like a year before I can play it at full speed . I might be able to get a few more percent speedwise out of it, but I get sloppy after awhile.

Question: I was practicing for a while to not rest my wrist on the bridge. Practicing this way seems to promote the right muscle movements and strength building. Do you think it might help me to get the idea of which muscles actually come into play when picking faster? Try playing this tune without resting on the bridge and let me know what you think.
It seems like the muscles at the back of my wrist are the ones that get tired. Hoping to build strength in this area.

hey Jim, you got it right man, just go crazy speed and you will play it very good! and by the way i do rest the palm of the hand on the guitar/bridge, just feels right to me

try to get back to this one in the future slowly increase the tempo!

very very very very nice jim, really spot on brother, i would just improve a TINY bit the tone, but i like it a lot, very good vintage tone here!

Thanks my friend. What would you recommend to improve the tone? Maybe I can tweak it a little bit boefre submitting my lead take. I'm thinking that it sounds sort of muffled like too much mids or low end.


Edit: typos and other stuff that happens when you've got a guitar in hand while trying to post.

i feel like you tone is good but it needs more "gain" somehow, what are you using now?
i think if you put a hotter input it will sound much better, how high is the input meter going?

The input meter goes to about -3dB.
That's into Sonar. The Pod X3 has an attenuator switch that gives you 2 levels to choose from. I'm using the hotter setting for this take with my strat. I'm not sure if I have much more control over the level. I'll take a look at the Pod manual to see.

I've got the lead recorded now and will post soon. I re-amped the rhythm guitar and gave it some more gain, but compared to your tone, it's kind of "dirty" sounding. It sounds good and everything, but for this tune I want to get a hot, cleaner sound which is what I'm hearing when I listen to your video. When you hit the strings hard, it seems to go into overdrive nicely and then clean up quickly as the chord decays. It sounds huge, raw, and clean.

Hey, I saw your youtube review of the Guitar Rig 4. Nice job. I'm thinking about getting it. I have GTR3 LE that came with Sonar and it's nice, but only has like three amp models. It does have the Plexi 800 which is what I'm using for both rhythm and lead on this lesson. Just can't seem to find the sweet spot. If I can get close to the tone of your lesson, then I think I've found a good rhythm guitar sound to use for these rock and hard rock tunes.

I might go out and get GTR4 just to get all the other amp models and its "control room" feature. Your demo on youtube might have sold me.

Ok Adrian here it is...
I tweaked the tone on the rhythm and it sounds a little better though the distortion still sounds a little bit "gritty". I think it's a cool sound, but still not a punchy as yours. Tell me if you think I should add more distortion. I used a Fender Deluxe amp model and it does sound very Fender like.

I think playing wise the main thing that could be better is the slide at the very beginning and again after the break. You're doing something different there which sounds bigger and like there's more going on. All I'm doing there is to slide up the e string and back down one time. The lead turned out pretty good, but the timing isn't perfect. It's tougher than it looks doing that kind of stacatto with a bend at the same time. The tension in my left arm from bending the string transfers itself somehow to my right hand. At least I noticed it here a lot and for sure that's something to work on, i.e., making sure there's no tension in the right hand even when you have to add tension in the left to bend a string. I guess it's called right/left independence. Oh yeah, I used a Marshall tone for the lead. It sounds pretty authentic too I think.

I loved this lesson man, ... not too hard to play, but with interesting parts, and I got to do three parts and get some experience with mixing of my own stuff which is cool. Thanks in advance for your comments. I'll post on the REC too.

Hey Adrian. Just to let you know. I will be out of town for a vacation for the next week so I won't be able to get to any new assignments until I return next Tuesday. Actually, not sure if there will be any more assignments. When does the MTP end? Anyway, I want to thank you in advance for all of the help and inspiration to study new styles and techniques. Good luck with your new studio. I hope you can record some new cool lessons in it as soon as construction is finished.

excellent take jim, i'm very proud here, the tone man, i LOVE it, very accurate, i really dig it, specially the rhythmic part, sounds very classic congratulations, you are turning into a very interesting guitar player, how does it feel?

the solo got a lot of attitude, but the tone could be a little less bassier just a bit!
lovely les paul, is that a gibson?

Adrian, thanks for the new lesson. I always like Gerardo's stuff, and the Police too. I should learn the bass part as well.

I am thinking atm about whether or not to continue to take private lessons. I think that the best thing I got out of this MTP is to be pushed in new directions. ... to practice and learn something that I normally might not get around to learning. It's kind of like listening to the radio instead of listening to my MP3s. There's so much great variety of stuff out there that could really enhance my playing if I can master different things and sounds.
