Hey everyone...

So everyone says - 'Tone is in your hands'...Now I tend to agree with this statement but I'm having a problem lately. I've gotten addicted to my PodXT and Guitarig. I have MesaBoogie F50 1x12 and I swear I play 3x better through the modeling stuff. Is it because the PodXT and Guitarig are less sensitive to errors or something? I really can't figure it out. I get totally frustrated with my sound thru the Mesa but I feel awesome using the modeling stuff.
I want to join a band and don't think it would be feasiable using the modeling hardware/spftware for jamming...
Should I just keep on sticking with the Mesa till I can squeeze something out of it? I've tried using other pedals with the Mesa like a Fulltone FullDrive 2, Univibe, DD3, Chorus pedal, Wah, like everything - I just can't seem to get what I want out of it. The cleans ain't clean or chimey enough and the dirty is good for rythym but it's still just..erm - missing something. I use Marcus's patch for the PodXT and I just absolutely would love to be able to recreate that on a amplifier...

Any suggestions guys?

It is true that tone is in the fingers, maybe the Mesa just isnt for you. Its a good amp, but maybe its not right for your fingers.

Its amazing how much your hands play in gear selection, for me for instance i sound good with a Vox or Mesa. Marshalls sound like crap under my fingers no matter what guitar or effects i use. There are so many amps i just cant sound right thru.

Fender, Marshall, Krank, Crate, JSX, etc.

So far my best results have come from Carvin, Mesa, Vox...in that order.

You may just have to assume that Mesa is not the amp for you.

I feel the same way as you. I run a Marshall for dirty and
an almost all original 65 fender twin for clean. I still swear at
times my modeling stuff on the comp comes off sounding better.
Playing around with different individual effects pedals has helped
cure some of this for me in the past....

I think some of it is just in my head wink.gif
Daniel has also made some great points, sit at a local guitar shop
for a few hours and run a few diff. amps. Trial and error

Look into running your Pod into an amplifier like this:

https://www.carvinguitars.com/products/sing...p?product=TS100

I use a Digitech GSP-1101 (pod-like) into this amp then to a Peavey 5150 4x12 cab.

Sounds great!

The other guitarist in my band has a 5150 head and a mesa head. His rig is a bit punchier and a bit more "live" sounding due to having a tube preamp. But I have no complaints here.

Another benefit is I can leave the amp and 4x12 at practice and just take the GSP home. Its all of 6 pounds. smile.gif

Can't you turn off the amp sim on the PodXT? I know for some of those miltifx/sim boxes you can leave the effects chain in place and kill the amp sim so you can run it through your amp.

As for the differences between what you hear from the Pod and Guitar Rig vs your Mesa Amp, it depends on what you're getting.

To figure it out, I'd go through the signal chain on the Pod and start eliminating things til you sound like crap. Could be a compressor or a noise gate in the Pod patch that's cleaning up your playing.

There's something you don't normally read.

Makes perfect sense here though!

I figure tone is in your hands, at least 90% of it. So I don't worry about it. If I am ever a aged guitar god and women half my age are crashing down my door to get at me, I will work on the other 10% more than I do now.

I realllllllly like the idea... I will certainly try that when I get home. Hopefully it's something I'd never thought to use intentionally!

I agree with Daniel, I love my Mesa Boogie more than any other amp, but you have to be into this kind of amp I guess, there are definitely other amps that are easier to handle. So maybe you should check out some other brands as well, just to get an impression how it feels to play through those ones.

It is a fact that modelling software can sometimes "improve" your playing. By improving I don't mean real improving, but killing the dynamics and smearing the sound so that errors dont' come out that loud. On the other hand, when you play through a proper amp, everything goes out just as you played it, so you need to play perfectly if you want to sound perfect, it makes sense right?

On the other hand I do agree with the others here when they say the Mesa could not be the good choice for you. I personally don't like Mesa, it's to clean from me. I like Marshalls because of their crunchy warm tone. Some would say on the other hand that Marshall is too dirty and unprecise, so it's all matter of personal taste of course. Perhaps you could go to a store and tryout some amps to see what you will come up with. You can try similar gear like you use as emulation with POD, this can lead you somewhere for sure mate.

Ivan has a point I believe,it could be dynamics.
With modelers and all digital units all tones you're playing
are kind a leveled AND not getting out much articulated,
so that might lead to more clean playing. smile.gif
