In a comment to my blog post, RobM suggests that I get a metronome. Is this something that I, as a complete beginner, should get right away to do things "right" from the start? If so, any suggestions on what to get?

Hi Henrik!!

I personally would say yes, Metronome practice is vital for a beginner! This is because it creates good habits NOW when you most need them. IT will keep your playing in-time and even, most of all it will set you up long term with good habits.

I remember watching Kris's lessons and hanging onto every word, something i have never forgotten is when he said something along the lines of "without the metronom you will never be a flashy guitarist" and "take my word for it, without a metronome you wont be a pro player, you will sound like sh*t" laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

"from today always use a metronome" and I did!! smile.gif

If you have any more questions please ask Henrik!

regards

Absolutely Henrik, using metronome from the start is something you can achieve a lot from it. smile.gif

But also I must confess that I didn't use it a lot during my beginner age,
and that's because it was quite hard to get even strings for guitar laugh.gif

So I played along with tune or track all the time, and wasted many hours I guess biggrin.gif .

Final conclusion,metronome,yes. smile.gif

+1 with Matt and Muris Henrik. It's never to soon to practice with a metronome for developing a sense of time and it can help you track your progress with regards to speed picking etc.

Cheers,
Tony

I don't know if the above answerers mean you should buy a "real" one or if you are OK with a software one.
There are some freeware metronomes available. Try searching the forum for it, there have been some threads recommending software metronomes. Both downloadable and online versions. Metronome online comes to mind.
If you can't find the search function, give a shout here tongue.gif

Metronomes are great, for beginners to pro's. Later on when you can really start jamming, you may end up not using it as much in favor of just playing with a backing track, which is more or less what a metronome simulates (a drum beat, to keep you in time). So yes, definitely get one now, it'll never be an obsolete tool for you smile.gif

[edit] Yes, like blindwillie said, there is an option to get a free metronome online. The downside to this is you can't always have your computer and guitar in the same place. I still use a metronome I downloaded though.
