ok, so I practice scales such as pentatonic, mixylodian etc. But how would you know which ones to use and where in a song?

I take it you can solo/improvise with these scales, but which ones to use?

Thanks

Scales (diatonic ones, with 7 notes, like major, minor and modes) are base for chord progressions,
each scale or mode offers you 7 chords which you can use in progression.
In other words, scale will tell you progression OR progression will tell you scale.
So you need some extra theory knowledge here, knowledge of keys to be precise.
And do not be confused by pentatonic scales tho,
they are not "real" scales like the ones I mentioned before
cause per example minor pentatonic is just 5 notes out of 7 from minor scale,
same thing happens with major pentatonic,
it's 5 notes out of 7 from major scale.

Perhaps you might wanna give me a progression you have?
That way I could tell you which scale (or scales) to use
and explain it why. smile.gif

Chord progression determines what scale or mode you should use. In order to know things, you need to learn major and minor scale theory and harmony. Once you learn that, it will be very easy to determine from which key comes Bb7 and what kind of scale or mode you should/could play over it.

Pentatonic scales have 5 notes and they are different than diatonic scales (Myxolydian is one of them) that have 7 notes.
If you want to learn how to improvise, the essential thing is to learn the diatonic pattern over the neck, and learn where the modes are. Check out my modes workshop lesson:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ernate-picking/
for more detailed approach to all of the 7 modes. By learning the whole diatonic pattern over the neck, and learning what chords are derived from what mode it will enable you to improvise.
