Ok, you've got 8 tracks to fill up with your personal choices for the best instrumental guitar album of all time !
Any genre, no restrictions. Solo artists or bands. It just has to be guitar based ! There's no order of favourite tracks, just 8 tracks. Here's my 8. If I thought about it for longer I might make other choices but these are what first springs to mind.
1. Ice #9 - Joe Satriani
2. The Crying Machine - Steve Vai
3. Go Off - Cacophony
4. Black Star - Yngwie Malmsteen
5. Krakatau - Yngwie Malmsteen
6. Mr. Scary - George Lynch
7. Crystal Planet - Joe Satriani
8. Evil Eye - Yngwie Malmsteen
P.S. When we've got a few different lists from people maybe we can flip the thread on its head and suggest 8 songs but covered by other people ?
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Andy Timmons - Electric Gypsy
Andy Wood - Shredneck
Pete Thorn - Monster Movie
Neil Zaza - I'm Alright
Steve Stevens - Memory Crash
Charlie Parra del Riego - Speed f*cks

Tough one! but cool idea. Here goes ...
Goodbye Porkpie Hat - Jeff Beck
Impressions - Pat Martino
Affirmation - George Benson
Love Stuck Baby - SRV
Bright Size Life - Pat Metheny
Fred - Alan Holdsworth (Tony Williams 'Lifetime' band)
Dance of Maya - John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu orch)
Fire - Jimi Hendrix
*I could easily and quickly pick at least 100 (seriously - no problem) but these 8 are fundamental for me wanting to play the guitar well.
No particular order:
Pat Metheny - Phase dance
Jeff Beck - Because we finished as lovers
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride
Joe Pass - Autumn Leaves
Allan Holdsworth - Home
Paco de Lucia - Entre Dos Aguas
John Mclaughlin - Birds of Fire
Mike Stern - Time in Place
Great and varied answers here, guys !
Shall we mix it up and perhaps suggest who could cover each other's songs on our lists ? It doesn't have to be all of them, but I'll go first..
Evil Eye - Joe Satriani (that would be very interesting !)
Black Star - Steve Vai or Marty Friedman
I'd love to hear Satch and Vai perform each other's songs.. and MAB and Vinnie Moore playing some Yngwie.
From my list I'd love to hear this so called guitarist named Ben Higgins cover Guthrie Govan's 'Sevens'. & likewise Guthrie covering Mr. Badass, that'd be interesting.
But it would be pretty cool to hear Paul Gilbert cover Andy Timmons' 'Ghost of You'. Or Paul Gilbert give it a go at Sevens.
My list would be (in no particular order):-
Danny Gatton ~ Nit Pickin'
Shawn Lane ~ Gray Pianos Flying
Stevie Ray Vaughan ~ Scuttle Buttin'
Andres Segovia ~ Capricho Diabolico, Op.85
Ry Cooder ~ Feeling Bad Blues
Steve Vai ~ For the Love of God
Joe Satriani ~ The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing
Django Reinhardt ~ Honeysuckle Rose
Like everyone I could have made a list of at least 100!! I chose these as a good cross section of styles that you could play to someone who you were trying to introduce to Instrumental Guitar Music!
As for a cover??
Segovia playing Satriani!!
