GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Considering Leaving Gmc

Posted by: Guitarman700 Mar 2 2008, 11:04 PM

well, im considering leaving gmc. between several personal arguments and financial troubles, including the fact im not getting anywhere on guitar, i feel it may be time for me to move on. i still have several months to make my decision, but im leaning toward it. there are people here who i would call my friends (you know who you are) but i feel the community has changed, and im going through a rough time in life right now. if anyone wants me to stay tell me, and ill take that into consideration.

thanks. unsure.gif

How long have you been playing? Perhaps your expectations are too high and you are trying to accomplish things that are require many more practice hours. And the best way to avoid personal arguements is to just stray away from controversial topics. I have heated personal arguements all the time on UG, and I don't sweat them at all, no big deal really, just opposing opinions. If you are having financial problems and are leaving GMC beacuse of that, I think everyone can understand and respect that.

Hey m8 I'm here since just a week and I'm thinking same thing.
I think I won't just because I wanna try to learn something from guitar lessons.
Probably I'll write less on the forum.
Perhaps you could do the same?

about 3 years. but lately, many things have kept me from practicing; sickness, for about 3 weeks, my chronic shoulder pain and an ingrown finger nail. im trying to pull my life together, but i just feel lost and overwhelmed, i dont know what to do.

I would leave also, if it were expensive. But at 6 months for under $50 a clip, no brainer. I hang around, best deal in town. Even if I have already been exposed to most genres already here. Some of those guys may be household names in the music world in a little while. Pretty unreal to be getting advise from guys like Muris as this price.

Then take some break smile.gif

And than you'll see if you will come back to guitar playing or do anything else, we'll be here smile.gif

it's not like it is a marriage, or leaving a job of 15 years. if you want, let it expire. if you want to come back, come back. i think maybe you are a bit embarrassed because you opened up with people here on your personal life. probably not a greaet idea with people you don't know very well, but big deal. so what? yesterday I bought a big bag of potato chips and ate the whole bag in one setting. also not a good idea. it happens. there is a quote from Mark Twain (greatest american novelist in my view). it goes like, "dogs are great because you can make a fool of yourself in front of your dog, and the dog will just make a fool of himself back to you.". Just think of us as a bunch of dogs.

You're adding a lot to the GMC community by your presence so of course we want to you stick around. I do.

It's understandable that if there's a lot going on in your life you should deal with that. I mean, one can't just add stuff into ones back pack, sooner or later it will overflow.

Listen! Very often burden feels heavy but some times the solution can be simple. If you're looking for solutions I'll suggest something.
Make a list of what you do and how much time it takes - the idea is to become more efficient - and be honest to yourself when you do it.

like;
homework - a lot
GMC - a lot
console games - a lot
TV - a lot
Going out - a little
football practice - medium

Six activities where of four is "a lot". Would need change I'd say. Less time spent on each thing, all tasks planned and not doing several things at once - like homework + GMC + TV at the same time would be bound to fail all three.

Add to the list how important things are and how much you'd want to spend
homework - a lot (10 a lot)
GMC - a lot (7 medium)
console games - a lot (5 medium)
TV - a lot (2 a little)
Going out - a little (4 a little)
football practice - medium (3 a little)

Cut the time for the lower points and spend time on the higher ones.
First do home work for a long time, when finished go for GMC for a medium period of time, next some console gaming, finally some football practice... no time to TV today. For example.

It's easy to sort out what takes time and how to prioritise and I suspect that with problems concentrating it's a good way to deal with things to spend time on one thing at a time.

Hopefully GMC is up there (below school) when you're done wink.gif

Hey Guitarman. Have you read all the topics about new guys coming to GMC saying stuff like "Well, I finally picked up my guitar for the first time in 25 years and now here I am." ? You have a great opportunity to become a great guitar player being here, that those guys didn't have. I urge you to think it over, you wouldn't want to realize many years down the road that you actually DO want to play guitar and you DO have the motivation, do you? You'll kick yourself when you realize what you could have achieved, especially with the help of GMC!

In the end, it's up to you. But I would persuade you to keep going. I know it seems like slow progress at times, I've definitely been there and I know I'll be there some more. But if you keep playing, you WILL get better. It takes time. But don't give up.

Hey man, you know what? my subscription expired like 3 months ago, and i still hang out here, its a great community. And i still learn, i still practice my ass off everyday to fulfill my dream, but it seems like it isnt your dream but rather a hobby. I dont think you should leave, but if you want to quit guitar or practice less, theres no harm in that really. Theres many things to do in life, just go for them smile.gif

Id like to have your MSN so we could chat sometime, it would be good smile.gif

Who is crushing on your playing? Here at GMC?Who? unsure.gif

Posted by: Smells Mar 3 2008, 12:40 AM

i hope you stay, I`d go with having a break for sure but dont give up smile.gif

hard sometimes to keep going when other things/pressures & money are involved, I gave up for 6 months when my daughter was born but also coz I felt it was a good moment to quit, my wife actually talked me out of getting rid of some of my gear as I was adamant I wouldnt pick it up again, but here I am! and loving it! to begin with (once I discovered GMC for inspiration) when I first plugged the guitar back in it was really tough! but after a very short period of time it all came back with a whole new lease of life for me, I cant remember the last time I enjoyed playing my guitar so much, a break if you feel this way will ultimatly do you some good, it worked for me

No! no one at GMC would ever do that. but, people i look up to, they say, "theres no way to make money as a pro musician, youll never make it that way. find a nice safe career, and youll do fine." this is coming from some other guitar players i know, and i heard that for years, till i stopped seeing them. their my friends, but i just could not tak that anymore.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Mar 3 2008, 12:45 AM

I can guarantee you're better than me on guitar. Stick around as people don't want anyone to quit guitar or leave here. Especially people who actually contribute some to the community. I want to quit guitar but I'm just having a break and doing other things for a while.

Ok man, but my gamertag is LucaBrasi2007 i think ( i cant remember it biggrin.gif), im not around Xbox Live that much but ill try to get on sometime.

Also, if thats your dream, then dont put it down, dreams were created for only the strongest ones to achieve, those people you say are part of a guitarists dream, a singer's dream, a painter's dream, of ANY dream! those people are part of every story and they should be! Because if they werent, would you feel that accomplished when you are finally there?

It's hard to pick the right path or career, indeed.
But the most important thing is to enjoy in it.
And every career or job needs hard work,
easy money is something that comes after hard work.
So you can try something else as a career but you don't have to quit guitar because of that.
Let it stays a hobby or some cause many guys have turned their hobbies into careers.
I'm not telling that you'll do the same IF you try something else
but just try to enjoy for work, that's the only way of success. smile.gif

I think its up to you.....but I think it would be a mistake. the people hear are pretty cool.........sure once in a while a honest opinion might get you a small heated debate but,,,,,,,in the end no one is going to hate you for it...I will say if it is a health risk to play guitar then take it in a new direction........music has more areas to learn..like mixing and production...........make some midi backing tracks with fruity loops.and have a few collabs........would give you a break from guitar.and a whole new out look on music...... thats what is great about gmc.......everyone and anyone can get involved..............with starting a collab or a topic.......... just something to think about..........but i hope you stay...i dont realy know who you are.......but musicians tend to allways stick together...and help one anouther

Who are they to say something like this? GMC is born after Kris' personal experience. The hard work is the key. No matter which is the job. As said before, you can play the guitar as a hobby. The most important thing about to play an instrument is to have fun. Sometimes it's boring to play exercises but for me it's all about fun.

Hey man, a word of advice for you, I shall share...

My life has been a living hell the past year or more, I have had about 8 surgeries, another coming up in April, Many health problems, about 2 months ago I was in the hospital on Jones because I overdosed and nearly died, have had ad girl problems, suffer with depression, anxiety and bi-polar, etc. You get the story. But when you are feeling down and can't handle life, giving up should not be an option. It will only bring you down even more, take my word for it because I have been through it. Stick with your dreams no matter how long they deceive you, because one day with plenty of commitment you will find your hard work has payed off and you will be happy you stuck with what you believed was right for you (even if it didnt seem that way at first which I can see is affecting you at this point in time). Your not alone my friend like ive said ive been through what you are feeling.

Best of luck my friend, stick with it!

in the topic you started calld "I Sang Two Little Songs For You..."...no body sad"you suck"..or "you have no clue when it comes to singing"...
people where giving ther opinion on your voice....why is that strange???
and you sad some thing about superior atitude....well only supperior atitude was coming from you...sayig that you do not need to listen Luciana(who is an Instructor by the way)..becouse you do not think that she is better singer than you...
even if that is the trouth..you do not say some thing like that...and than have a hard feelings becouse some people sad postive comnstructive things......

Luciana is an amazing singer with a load of musical experience. Somebody that can really help you with your singing but she deserves some respect for giving her time to help people at GMC out with singing. That comment got to be also as going around saying you're better than others isn't the best way to go about life. People are good in different ways and if you listen to what Nemanja and Luciana have to say your voice will improved guaranteed.

I think we`re beening taken a little off topic here, Guitarman700 was stating reasons why he may leave GMC, which was down to personal and financial reasons and not about how he felt he has been treated here by GMC members etc.

Angelica, I understand that you feel "attacked" in some way? I dont believe this to be the case, the moderating team were watching your threads very closely last night and would certainly have intervened if it was deemd that you where being insulted in any way.

Of course the choice is entirely yours if you wish to leave GMC, but please state your exact reasons so that GMC can continue to improve, if we dont know exactly what the problem is we cant help you, we want you to feel welcome here and post anything you wish (within posting guidelines of course smile.gif) we need your help and input if you feel this is not the case.

If you wish to discuss further off of the forum then feel free to pm any of the moderators on the site, as I personally dont think that this is a very healthy direction for a thread to go without any explanation, as the majority of people (including myself) are a little confused as to why you would say you want to leave.

We are very friendly here and I hope that we can all help you enjoy your time learning the guitar at GMC smile.gif

Yeah, that's it, I feel attacked and I feel more and more like that with these last posts.

Posted by: OrganisedConfusion Mar 3 2008, 12:23 PM

I bet if guitarman has a week or two away he'd run back to us lol smile.gif He can't stay away forever. We are all here for the same reason in the end to learn. It's a shame if you can't afford for financial reasons but I'm sure over the coming months if you put a bit of money each month away guitarman then by the time it comes to your renewal you will have enough money to pay smile.gif Plus the price here is very low for all the quality instructors and lessons we have here at GMC smile.gif

Instead of posting publicly it may be better to PM a mod saying exactly how you feel you've been attacked.

You may think this has grown into a bit of a big deal- but this doesnt happen often, and for those of us who constantly try to give a helping hand we'd like to know whats up..thats all smile.gif

edit: LMAO @ Matt

+1 with deep roots there.

If someone really wanted to leave GMC (I find no reason to see why anyone would), the best thing to do would be to PM a mod and state why.smile.gif OR , Just decide to stay off the forums and learn from the fabulous video archive smile.gif Or, maybe take up say , Fishing wink.gif

If anyone can find one instance where an personal attack has taken place, I will be very supprised smile.gif

Really guys, this thread has run its course now. Once someones brough out the "Dog chasing tail" photo, you know its time t o move on wink.gif
