GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Boss Gt-10 Multi Effect Pedal

Posted by: SensE Mar 23 2008, 04:43 AM

WOW..

All the guitar players would be interested in the feature of GT-10. What's the difference between GT-8 and GT-10? It looks like to me the features are the same with the fact that GT-10 has more effect loop. What do you think? Hope for some massive info and response.

Soundwise i think it's pretty much the same as the GT-8. The main difference is the USB connection which the GT-8 sadly lacks. Oh, and one more ctrl button.

It looks really slick though smile.gif

I wouldn't use it for live gigs, don't know.. But it sure looks great.

The GT boards are built like tanks. More than safe enough for live-usage smile.gif

i heard so many people said that it sounds way too "digital" for a multi effects. It means to me that the sound is not nature and lifeless. Well, type of amps does justilfy how's a multi effect sounds to be.

Trond Vold, good call. I do not know GT-8 has no USB connection.

The key to getting a great sound out of any modeler, in my opinion of course, is to run them in stereo. They do sound bad, lifeless etc, if run mono.

I own the GT8 and I love the sounds that I can pull from it. I'm not so sure that one more pedal and a longer loop is going to justify moving up. USB doesn't matter to me as I record into a Korg D3200 workstation.

Now if the GT10 sounds noticably better...that would be another story. I may have to test drive one now...

As for live, absolutely. I run it into a mixing board, Crown Power amp and out to custom cabs housing JBL E130s...in stereo....AWESOME!

As for Boss, I've been running Boss pedals since 1980.... I've never had one let me down.... I've had tons of other pedals fail on me...some on stage... Never a Boss though...

Very true, stereo is the only option.
Another thing i've noticed is that alot of people are fast to label it bad, lifeless, too digital and whatnot without really bother taking the time to figure out how to set it up properly.

A simple press on the "Output Selector" option can do alot of difference.

I didn't really talked about the units durability. I was talking about the sound. I'm not expert though, never really played Boss GT8 or even GT10 so don't really know how they behave on stage I must say. It's just some general thought I have about processors sound on stage. I've heard a couple of times processors live that sound decent when the player knows what he is doing and use it in minimum amount. But that's all.

I hope the gt-10 is a great piece of gear cause I bought a gt-6 in the past and all I remember is no good tone. But I think the boss has improved this type of stuff.

Very true Trond - spending time setting it up so that the output level is optimised is well worth it and gives a much better sound in my experience with the GT8. Too often people only hear it demo'ed in a shop where they've not set the level correctly and then it sounds sterile and digital. That and a lot of people overuse the noise suppression and wonder why their tone goes.

Cheers,
Tony

I also forgot to mention that the factory preset patches are horrible on just about every modeler. I don't know what they were thinking but when you first open the box, the first thing anybody new to a modeler, or that specific one, is they jump into the factory patches to see if they can find something to use as a starting point. But they are all bad.

The only way to get what you want from a modeler is to start from scratch and become familiar with each and every setting. Once you achieve that, they can do some really fantastic things.

DOn't get me wrong guys, I love Boss, use Boss pedals mainly myself, I would love this new unit to be a good all around solution, but I think it is, as Trond and many of you who allready have the unit say only an upgraded version of the GT8.

I dont know. It looks to me many gmcer are using Line 6 multi effect than using boss GT series. Is line 6 product far more superior than boss ? Lets just compare X3 LIVE and GT-10 then.

I think it's like comparing the Wii, PS3 or The 360 to eachother. People will find different things they like about each.

I would say they are the same level of quality though. I havent tried the GT-10 yet, but i'm getting more and more addicted to my GT-8

And the good ol' super nintendo would be a zoom proc laugh.gif

I am using a GT-10, I quite like the sounds. Some of the presets are very good too as an unexpected bonus, and it is incredibly flexible and easy to program. I left behind my zoom g2 in Australia, and let me say they are worlds apart. The zoom did not sound clean but the distorts had me running for cover. I think its a great unit, but I am sadly not very experienced with multi effects, this is my first real one.

I enjoy tweaking the sounds and there are so many options and models to choose from. I live in tiny crowded accommodation, so having a tube amp is out of the question sadly (also expensive, but not so bad here in japan, everything is waay cheaper than australia) . I considered some of the tube models, but all the guitar guys I spoke to here said this was the best modeler out at the moment.

The USB function is totally awesome. Have not got it working with linux yet but recording to my PC in windoze is so easy.
And whats better is its both ways! so I play GMC backing tracks through the system too. Its essentially a complete stereo sound card, It beats the on board sound of my laptop quite drastically.

Also the noise reduction is very good. My humbuckers are very quiet as it is, but with noise reduction they are ABSOLUTELY silent even on massive distort settings unless I move...

The looks are not bad either. I just wish the leds were blue and not red. One day I might hack at it and mod it. But that wont be for a while. I quite like it as it is in its working condition tongue.gif

I wish I had more experience with other systems so I can compare it, but I can say its very friendly to new users, just be sure to explore its features before dismissing it for any reason. Particularly its sound is very good with the right settings, and of course this changes based on what guitar and pickups you might be using.

Anyway for people considering it, just give it a burl in a music shop or something and explore it. I think its certainly not bad. And I do not regret getting it even slightly.

Loki,

Very interesting ,Loki. Sadly, I have not seen any GT-10 units in guitar store in US. I'm still waiting for its release and want to try it out so badly. Thank you for sharing your pleasant experience with us.

I'm getting one in a months time, can't wait biggrin.gif

nice gadget

Posted by: audiopaal May 3 2008, 12:58 PM

edit: Oh, and the GT-10 has a new sound-processor, which makes for better sounds.
It's got a looper, one extra CTRL switch, EZ-tone generator for easy and fast sound-making, a more user-friendly interface (more like the Boss VF-1 than the GT-8 I believe) and less buttons and knobs (me like that part laugh.gif)
And the blue screen is said to be visible under both lights and in the dark so it should be very good on stage, and it's a boss so it's built like a tank!

Hmmm, think I remembered everything biggrin.gif

How exactly do you run a multi-effects pedal in stereo? Do you need two amps for it or can you do it with just one?

Thanks. smile.gif

Basically, you just need an amp or a pre-amp with stereo FX-loop
