hey guys... well heres what i was wondering about. my guitar has a switch that does 3 settings. i know some guitar have 5 settings and such. well what i was wondering is whats each one use for? and what exactly do they do?

im assume all the way down is for my back pickup, all the way up is for the front pickups and in the middle is for both. someone told me before that you have the switch down all the way for rythem stuff and up for solos on like the b or e string. is this true?

if so what does this accomplish... why is it that way? and then why is there a middle setting? what is that used for? also i was wondering does the order change or anything if you are palm muting kinda over the back pickup?

You can use both bridge and neck pickup for both lead and rhythm stuff,
it's only matter of taste, purely individual matter indeed. smile.gif
And yes, middle position is for use of both pickups,
if pickups are humbuckers then this positions combines single coils from each,
tho this is not rule, just most common option.
Hope this helps. smile.gif

A pickup selector is what that switch is, it toggles between your bridge pickup(the one right by the bridge), and the neck pickup(the one right by the neck). Neck pickups usually tend to be quieter and warmer sounding, and bridge pickups tend to be louder and brighter.
When the switch is on the neck pickup, only the neck pickup is picking up the vibrations of the strings, and when it's on the bridge position, only the bridge is picking up vibrations, middle position means both of them are on.
It it basically for getting more sounds out of you guitar, try it out on a clean and distorted sound, play a riff and switch between the pickups. You should hear a difference between the three positions, just pick the one you like the sound of the best and play!
Oh and palm muting has no effect on the pickups.

EDIT: Muris beat me, I'm too slow. LOL

Muris is right! It depends on what you need and like more! I use bride pickup for riffing as it let's more gain out, and neck pickup for shredding as it makes sound smoother, but sometimes i also use bridge pickup for shred runs because of the attack you get with them. Really - there is no strict answer - it's what you need and what you like smile.gif
