Piano phase is a steve reich piece, in which one 12 note pattern is played in unison on two pianos. One piano then changes it's speed a little bit, so the two gradually drift apart, gradually drift together again, but playing different notes at the same time, i.e. At the start they both play the 1st note together, then the 2nd note together, but after one "phase", they play the 1st and 2nd note together, then the 2nd and 3rd note together. It's the same effect as if two pendulum's are swinging, but one slightly faster than the other, then the pendulums will gradually fall out of sync, and gradually fall back in sync again.

I always though this piece was done by recording the pattern at two different speeds, seperately, then putting them together in a sequencer. Today though I stumbled across this video on youtube. It is one person playing the piece live on two pianos. I can't even begin to imagine how you can have that level of independance between your hands to play the same thing at two slightly different speeds at the same time. Anyway I just thought you might like to see this incredible feat of piano playing.

That is really quite something, very intriguing. Finger/hand independence is quite essential in piano playing anyway, but to this degree it really takes some doing I should imagine.

Technically amazing. That is great skills.
Musically, it's cacophonic to my ears though. smile.gif

I think it sounds good, but I can definitely understand why you don't like it. The main reason I posted it though is because of the technical skill involved.
