Wise words. With todays possibilities it is very easy to "overtweak" the project. Keeping it simple can be a very demanding, but in the same time very rewarding task.

These days, it can be harder and harder to do this as we get more and more effects and clever software - but always, the basics should be right first!

absolute right, if the basics don't work, you can add as many things as you want, it won't result in a great song.

This is the golden rule..If you don't make basics right for a song, not million guitars/keyboards/anything layers will make it better..So if something doesn't work , try looking back to very beginnings...
