Dudes and dudettes,

Can you help me please. When I want to create a backing track that repeats I tend to play the part three times while recording it then I cut and paste the middle part in as many repeats as I need. I record three parts but only cut the middle because I want to keep the continuity, if I just play it once I think it would sound wrong so to keep it natural I only cut the middle piece out.

The problem I have is that where it repeats I can here a click, maybe it's a momentary silence but I don't know why it is there.

You can hear it HERE at 36 and 58 seconds and at 1:19

Cheers

Phil

Good question Phil. What you need to do here is to trim the beginning and the end of the repeating section and have fade in and fade outs there. In practice it means that you find the first beat of the section and trim it with a fade in to start just right. Then zoom in on the ending section and add a fade out on the last note. My advice though would be to just record the section once as it will be easier to "cut it out". In this case the beginning will be clean as well as ending and minimum trimming and editing will be needed. If you just do a straight cut, there will be a click sound heard in those places.

Please let me know if this works out and if you need any more details? smile.gif

Thanks Bogdan,

I'm not sure I fully understand but I'll try it out tomorrow. It may be easier when I am at my computer.

Hi Phil,

Most DAW's have a 'cross fade' function, this way the software can create the fades between loops without affecting the original file (and its quick).

I know Logic Pro, Cubase, Cakewalk etc have the function.

Hope this is of some help

Chris

When you see an audio clip in the timeline, there should be an option drag the corner of the clip "box" from left to right (in case of fade in). You'll see the DAW automatically making a fade in this way. Same with fade out, drag from the end of clip to the left (grab a corner of the "box" to get a fade out). Try it out in the DAW and let me know if you were able to find the option.

You can see fade in/out being done in Reaper at 0:15 in this video:

Thanks Bogdan and Chris but I think you may have got confused by my statement below.

You can hear it HERE at 36 and 58 seconds and at 1:19

I didn't mean that you should read the post, just listen to the soundcloud file, in the post I ask about fading, but that isn't for this question. I had sorted the fading at the end. It's the little noise at 36 and 58 seconds and at 1:19 I want to sort out. If I record four bars of something like an arpeggio but want to use it for 32 bars, if I copy and paste the four bars to create 32, I get a click when it goes from one piece to the pasted piece.

Sorry for the confusion unsure.gif

Cheers

Phil

Hey Phil, I have listened to the clip and my feedback still stands. Those "clicks" happen because of the cuts in the audio file you are copy-pasting to make it loop. You need to trim the beginning and endings of those files using fade in and fade out options to make a "clean" beginning and ending note. If you don't do this, there is a click heard. Usually, it is done by zooming in a lot on the track to see the waveform of the sound. Then when you see the "first note" in the looping section, add a small fade in there. Look at the ending note of the loop section and add a small fade out there. This will eliminate the clicks when you copy-paste this file in the timeline.

Please let me know if you need any more details, I'll be glad to help?

Thanks Bogdan,

I'm a little confused. I haven't had chance to try it yet, hopefully it will become apparent when I do.

Cheers

Thanks folks,

Had a bit of an experiment with it, there IS a little triangular icon in the corner of the track that allows me to pull a fade in. It did work, I'll experiment a little bit more. How many beats either end have you found it best to have to get the optimum result?

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil, great to hear it worked. The best results are got when you have long looping sections. The trick with looping is actually to avoid loops, if that makes sense. This will make the music sound more natural due to human variation in the performance. You should play it as long as you can without making an error and then loop it.
