Maybe it only has to do with the material. Does the material resist the steel on the strings?

If it works you can use it. Possibly the steal strings will wear the capo as Jones suggested, but you got it for free anyway. Unless the present has sentimental value, you are free to destroy it anyway you want.

If you examine the capo, you will see very easily if it can create problems on the guitar neck. Does it have rough surfaces, is it too small/big for normal use, does it makes any un-normal contact with the finish, frets etc.. If everything is OK, I don't see why you cannot use it.
