i have decided im going for the pod becuase i need a good way of recording and practicing with headphones and the advantage of not having to buy effect and amps appeals to me. anyways im having a hard time deciding between the xt and the xt live because it only a 100 dollar differce and buying pedals for the pod xt makes it as expensive if not more. what do you say?

To be honest mate i got rid of my pod xt live because i just couldnt get on with the tone they produce, I found myself messing endlessly with different settings trying to get a decent sound, in fact the best thing i ever did was unplug the thing and plug straight into my amp!
I have a UX2 with pod farm for recording and just use my amp and am getting some pedal effects for everything else, pods will give you great versatility but make no mistake they dont sound as good as the real thing!

You can get great sounds out of a pod with perseverance, is it as good as a tube amp with some pedals? NO but its cheaper and the difference is not that great, especially at home. Ask alot of members and you will find they all use pods of some sort at home, and a tube amp and pedals live.

I completely agree !!

And you can even save a buck on getting a X3 since all the addon packs are included and the POD Farm is free, if that's something you'd be interested in.
With the X3 I'vet got everything I want at no extra cost.

It can be tricky to make your own patch from scratch though, but if you download presets that your favorite guitarists uses, it's a lot easier to do small tweaks to make it pretty much perfect.

@vampire18
The PODxt Live is pretty big, imo. An alternative is to get a PODxt and a floorboard like FBV Express.

but than the price goes up to about an x3 live price.
anyways i did some rethinking about the whole business and im not sure that any of them is worth. i think 95 precent of the time all i need for my tone is an 80 dollar metal muff. but the problem is i need a way to record my self and to play with earphones. is there any less expensive options for than instead of the pods?

I think you might go for guitar rig 3 and a decent soundcard, if you got monitors already. But this would probably the same price range or even more.

In my opinion PODs (or similar devices) are the best invention ever for guitar player. You can play and practice at every day or night time and have a decent sound in your headphones. For recording it's easy to use and you don't have to care about mic placement, amp volume and things like this.

I use a few basic presets and adjust them each time a bit. When doing presets on my own, my ears quickly get tired and after 15-20 minutes i can not say anymore if this preset sounds good or just different smile.gif. If you download a preset you can say instantly if you like or not and then adjust it to your guitar.

I have a POD XT Live and agree that it's pretty big. I thought its good to have pedals to switch between presets during a song, but actually i don't do this really often. A combination of Volume and Wah pedal is not really practical as well imo. If i would buy one again i would choose the setup Marcus mentioned above. A PODxt and a small floorboard to turn effects on and off.

Its not that it sounds "bad" as such, it really is a matter of taste and i just prefer the proper amp sounds, I record using a UX2 audio interface which is another pod product that has Pod Farm (Which is the new gearbox replacement software that usually runs the XT) the UX2 acts as the interface between my guitar and pc and gives me the ability to record. For home recording you cant fault Pod stuff and the UX 2 is great (Check the link) it has loads of features and flexibility and is based around recording rather than live sounds which is Line 6's strength in their products.

It just frustrated me, I spent all the time trying this tone and that preset but was never happy with the sounds, I always felt that the pod was the weak link in the signal chain and every time I removed it and tried something else it just sounded better to my ears, you cant argue with the flexibility and variety they offer but i always felt it was compromising the instrument and the amp. Maybe I am being over critical but it really is just my opinion, and as they say "Opinions are like backsides, everybody has one!"

Whoah!!

The UX2 is purely a recording interface, it has instrument and mic inputs with phantom power plus a whole host of other features, it runs through your pc via USB using the pod farm software so you can still access the modelled amp sounds and effects through your pc but it is purely a recording device. The XT is primarily an all in one effects unit with the option of recording as an added feature, the live version is designed to be used as a live pedalboard, so you upload tones from pod farm (or gearbox) onto it, take it to the gig and you have your tones ready. The pod does have one input (I think) for an external pedal but i never connected one so dont know how well this works.
You have to connect powered speakers to hear anythin through your pc, you can use your amp for this purpose, of course its designed to sit between your axe and the amp for live playing.
I didnt record with my XT so i dont know if you need anything wlse but i imagine you need to connect it to your soundcard somehow, you will need recording software as well, UX2 comes with Ableton lite but there are loads out there, i think Reaper is a free one???
As for packs they arent just presets, you can buy add on packs that give you more modelled amps, effects, EQ's etc.

Phew!

If you're concidering pod farm and add on packs, have a look at what I said above ^^

Here are some explanations on the whole matter:

Line 6 makes various products for various purposes. Some products are good only for PC desktop recording, some are good for playing with amps, but also have the PC recording abilities. Here are the devices you considered so far:

POD XT Live:
- lots of useful modeling and effects tones
- practice with it using headphones
- use it with guitar amps or straight into mixer
- record via USB to your PC

pros: great all-rounder, flexible, ideal for home use.
cons: not that great for live use, if you want to play it loud, it is best to connect it directly into mixer/keyboard amp.

POD XT:

I think this device is very similar if not the same as POD XT live, so everything applies to this one. The difference is that this device will need extra controller. I would say the Live version is better since you get all-in-one package.

TONEPORT/POD STUDIO:

Toneport and POD Studio are actually the same line of models from Line 6, they've been called Toneport until recently, and now Line 6 decided to rename them to POD Studio cause they probably want to make it closer to POD line of products:

- great desktop recording interface (serves as external sound card for your PC, and also you get a good modeling, not as many amps&effects as on POD but they've put enough to be able to make very diverse sounds&tones).
- It is not made for a live use, you need a PC for using it, since it requiers USB for power, you cannot use it with the guitar amp, there is a way, but it is not intended for that, it is intended only for PC recording - and it does a great job for the price. Plug & Play device.

There are several models, but most popular are POD Studios: GX, UX1, and UX2.

GX is 1 channel interface that has only 1 guitar input
UX1 is 2 channel interface that has 1 guitar input and 1 microphone input (with mic preamp)
UX2 is 2 channel interface that has 2 guitar inputs and 2 mic inputs (with 2 mic preamps). it also has footswitch option (you can buy external footswitch), but note that it can record only 2 channels of audio, despite it has 2 guitar and 2 mic inputs. It is basically UX1 with some added options.

All three devices use Line 6 modeling software called Gearbox. It is a software modeler with guitar amps, cabs & effects, metronome, player, and other features. I think after trying all the software modelers I can say that after Amplitube Fender, and Guitar Rig 3, the Gearbox is on the same level as these modelers are. They all have different features, but in terms of sound quality, you can dial in very similar quality of tones on gearbox, as on these two leading software modelers.

So what could be a good thing for you? The question is for what are you using the devices.

1. If you want to use the device only for PC recording and just wanna record your guitar, then I think POD Studio GX will serve the purpose. It costs only 100$, and has the same sound quality as it's older brothers UX1 and UX2.
2. If you need something to play with your amp at home, and possibly do some gigs, but where you can find a mixer to plug the POD directly there, or a keyboard amp, and want to record at home as well, then POD XT Live is a good solution.
3. If you need the device just for live play, and not for PC recording, then buying stomp boxes (like metal muff) or HQ rack effect processors is the way to go.

Ideally, you will wanna tend to have one piece of equipment for PC recording, and other piece of equipment for live use, each device doing great solely the function that is intended to do. Gear profiling is something that we all have to do, so getting something to get the job done on the PC side and not paying it too much is a good thing. As I said, POD Studio GX will serve for PC recording, and it is 100$. If you want to play live, get couple of more pedals for the rest of the money, like Metal Muff, and some delay pedal. You can used these pedals through POD Studio no problem as well, so they can serve for both home playing and live playing. This way you get a maximum out of your gear, and have various pieces of equipment that "get along well".

thx ivan i think i understand it much better now. pod live is or at least suppose to be for live use. studio is just for home pc use and the pod xt is basically a all in one thing. its not great for live because it has no pedals unless you buy them and its not as good as the studio at recording. all in all i think its not practical for me to purchase the live version and i prefer if i ever do get to perform to use pedals. so now its between the xt and the gx. the gx is great it comes with the pod farm which has the recording software and basically all the effects and amps i actually need plus its low priced. i dont understand where exactly can i plug a metal muff to it though. the only problem i have is that you can plug it in to an amp and that it needs a computer to run.
you keep saying finding a "mixer to plug the POD directly there, or a keyboard amp" what is so special about a key board amp why cant i just use a guitar amp? and i dont even know what a mixer is.
how much is the xt recording quality worse than the gx? cause if you can record with it and i can use it with a stomp box and take it with you can plug it into an amp and its pretty small and light wait the only drawbacks i can find is higher price, a need to get some recording software(i dont understand what software i get with the xt exactly do i get the pod effect computer editor or what do i get?) and the lack of a stomp box to use the wah and volume(what happens i get the device and if i dont have the pedal i cant use the wah at all or how does it go?)
im sorry about all the questions but we dont have the pods here in israel and even if we did it would probably cost twice as much as anywhere else so i dont have anywhere to appreciate it exactly)

the key thing to remember is that the xt has all the sounds on board and you can use the software (Gearbox or pod farm) on your pc to model tones and load them into your xt, your xt will also carry all the same effects as is on your pc so you can run it without being connected into a pc, its not ideal for live use but it still can be used in this manner.

A recording device such as the UX2 has to be conneced to pc and is only for recording, you cant take it to a jam session and it doesnt have any tones etc built into it, you use the same software as above but only through the pc as a recording station.

In terms of recording software you will get it with a UX2 or similar but not with the xt, this is not a problem as there are plenty of recording packages available that will work.
