I Have an X3 Live its awesome, Get the live its worth the few extra quid. I completely agree !! And you can even save a buck on getting a X3 since all the addon packs are included and the POD Farm is free, if that's something you'd be interested in. With the X3 I'vet got everything I want at no extra cost. -------------------- My bands homepage

I think you might go for guitar rig 3 and a decent soundcard, if you got monitors already. But this would probably the same price range or even more.

if you got rid of your pod how do you record? i cant believe it got so popular and it sounds bad. Its not that it sounds "bad" as such, it really is a matter of taste and i just prefer the proper amp sounds, I record using a UX2 audio interface which is another pod product that has Pod Farm (Which is the new gearbox replacement software that usually runs the XT) the UX2 acts as the interface between my guitar and pc and gives me the ability to record. For home recording you cant fault Pod stuff and the UX 2 is great (Check the link) it has loads of features and flexibility and is based around recording rather than live sounds which is Line 6's strength in their products. http://line6.com/podstudioux2/ First time I ever heard anyone say that It can be tricky to make your own patch from scratch though, but if you download presets that your favorite guitarists uses, it's a lot easier to do small tweaks to make it pretty much perfect. It just frustrated me, I spent all the time trying this tone and that preset but was never happy with the sounds, I always felt that the pod was the weak link in the signal chain and every time I removed it and tried something else it just sounded better to my ears, you cant argue with the flexibility and variety they offer but i always felt it was compromising the instrument and the amp. Maybe I am being over critical but it really is just my opinion, and as they say "Opinions are like backsides, everybody has one!" |

whats the difference between the xt and the ux2? does it just record? oh and can i use the pod with another real pedal? and can i connect it to my amp so i hear it from there? and one other thing. if i buy the xt i am ready to record and all i dont need other things? and what is all the packs they offer is it just presets or something importants? cause im sure i can get the presets elsewhere If you're concidering pod farm and add on packs, have a look at what I said above ^^ -------------------- My bands homepage

Here are some explanations on the whole matter:
Line 6 makes various products for various purposes. Some products are good only for PC desktop recording, some are good for playing with amps, but also have the PC recording abilities. Here are the devices you considered so far: POD XT Live: - lots of useful modeling and effects tones - practice with it using headphones - use it with guitar amps or straight into mixer - record via USB to your PC pros: great all-rounder, flexible, ideal for home use. cons: not that great for live use, if you want to play it loud, it is best to connect it directly into mixer/keyboard amp. POD XT: I think this device is very similar if not the same as POD XT live, so everything applies to this one. The difference is that this device will need extra controller. I would say the Live version is better since you get all-in-one package. TONEPORT/POD STUDIO: Toneport and POD Studio are actually the same line of models from Line 6, they've been called Toneport until recently, and now Line 6 decided to rename them to POD Studio cause they probably want to make it closer to POD line of products: - great desktop recording interface (serves as external sound card for your PC, and also you get a good modeling, not as many amps&effects as on POD but they've put enough to be able to make very diverse sounds&tones). - It is not made for a live use, you need a PC for using it, since it requiers USB for power, you cannot use it with the guitar amp, there is a way, but it is not intended for that, it is intended only for PC recording - and it does a great job for the price. Plug & Play device. There are several models, but most popular are POD Studios: GX, UX1, and UX2. GX is 1 channel interface that has only 1 guitar input UX1 is 2 channel interface that has 1 guitar input and 1 microphone input (with mic preamp) UX2 is 2 channel interface that has 2 guitar inputs and 2 mic inputs (with 2 mic preamps). it also has footswitch option (you can buy external footswitch), but note that it can record only 2 channels of audio, despite it has 2 guitar and 2 mic inputs. It is basically UX1 with some added options. All three devices use Line 6 modeling software called Gearbox. It is a software modeler with guitar amps, cabs & effects, metronome, player, and other features. I think after trying all the software modelers I can say that after Amplitube Fender, and Guitar Rig 3, the Gearbox is on the same level as these modelers are. They all have different features, but in terms of sound quality, you can dial in very similar quality of tones on gearbox, as on these two leading software modelers. So what could be a good thing for you? The question is for what are you using the devices. 1. If you want to use the device only for PC recording and just wanna record your guitar, then I think POD Studio GX will serve the purpose. It costs only 100$, and has the same sound quality as it's older brothers UX1 and UX2. 2. If you need something to play with your amp at home, and possibly do some gigs, but where you can find a mixer to plug the POD directly there, or a keyboard amp, and want to record at home as well, then POD XT Live is a good solution. 3. If you need the device just for live play, and not for PC recording, then buying stomp boxes (like metal muff) or HQ rack effect processors is the way to go. Ideally, you will wanna tend to have one piece of equipment for PC recording, and other piece of equipment for live use, each device doing great solely the function that is intended to do. Gear profiling is something that we all have to do, so getting something to get the job done on the PC side and not paying it too much is a good thing. As I said, POD Studio GX will serve for PC recording, and it is 100$. If you want to play live, get couple of more pedals for the rest of the money, like Metal Muff, and some delay pedal. You can used these pedals through POD Studio no problem as well, so they can serve for both home playing and live playing. This way you get a maximum out of your gear, and have various pieces of equipment that "get along well".
