Hey guys,

So I usually just use Guitar Rig 5 and play through that but lately I've wanted to actually use effects pedals and what not. My question is what types of pedals should be linked together? Eventually I plan on having multiple different types of pedals but I want to know what types of pedals go before or after the other.

Currently I have a Boss MT-2 metal zone distortion, a Protone Haunted Delay, a Protone Bulb Overdrive (in the building stage) and a GreenHouse effects Stonefish Chorus. I know that I'm going to need a power supply of some sort as well as a true bypass switcher.

There is really only a basic guideline out there, and even those differ.

If you search effects pedal order you will come across a ton of different orders - and that's because it really comes down to what sounds good to you.

I might like my gain based effects before my wah, the next guy might like them after. I like my EQ at the end of my signal chain - the next guy likes it at the very beginning.

The best thing you can do is take what effects you have, whether they be physical or software/VST - and experiment. Try moving the chorus before the distortion, and then after - listen to the differences and determine which one sounds best to you and go from there.

Hey mate Out of what I know and tried, the only thing that I have taken into account so far, was to be careful on what pedals go in front of the amp and what effects go in the FX loop. So, in my current setup, I keep things like this:

Guitar -> Tuner-> Phaser-> OD/Booster-> Noise Gate -> Amp

FX Loop: Delay and Reverb - out of what I know, time based effects sit best in the fx loop

Now, the order can be changed in what way you find suitable for your taste, so try and experiment with the pedals you have and I hope that the things I have spoken about above can make for some guidelines.

Hey Trey,
As Cosmin states, the 'usual' way is to have your OD's, Fuzz, Distortions in front of the Amp and then insert any Modulation, Delays, Reverbs etc into the FX Loop, if you have one!!
This is well worth a watch to get a few ideas!!

Even the modulation fx rule vary on what You like. For natural delay usage we plug it usualy at the end of signal chain but some (indie rock players for exmaple) like when it's in front of distortion so You can create specific "disorder" sound when distortion distorts both - true guitar signal + echos from delay

Hey Tray, did you get a chance to try out different orders of pedals and what did you settle upon?
