Howdy GMC. I'm looking to replace my Little Big Muff on my pedal board. I'm playing an Fender American Strat through a Hot Rod Deluxe. I'm currently not satisfied with the Big Muff here, it's just too muddy and dirty sounding.
I'm considering selling the Muff and replacing it with either a Box of Rock, or a Keeley modded DS-1. I'm trying to achieve as close to a Marshall sound as possible through my Hot Rod. I realize I'm very limited here but it's just what I have to work with.
Thoughts/suggestions on the two distortion pedals? Also, if anyone has any samples of either pedal played through a Fender amp I'd appreciate it!
Thanks.
You want a Marshall sound Distortion? Look no further!
Zvex Box of Rock!
Serioulsy it is unbeatable for this classic british Rock sound.
I can recommend all ZVex products.. Not a big fan of distortion pedals in general though!
Although not really a "Marshall Sound" I'd say try the IBANEZ TUBE SCREAMER. Really any version of this pedal will give you a nice lead tone. If you can find an older one in a used music store or pawn shop, even better. But the new ones also sound good. There are a TON of pedals out there so in the end you will probably need to go to a music store and try your ears out on several of them.
I use a Digitech GNX3 pedal board which emulates about a dozen different pedals. My fav emulation is the Tube Screamer. You could always get a pod or some other kind of modeler, that way you can have a variety of tones and sounds to choose from.
You can tryout some of the Marshall pedals like Guv'nor or Bluesbreaker, they have a nice tone, and sound similar to Marshall.
There are some great pedals that can do Marshall but they are a bit expensive. What's your budget?
It's so funny how ZakkWylde always is the first one to reply to these topics do you sleep Zakk? haha! Just kidding! You are very knowledgeable about gear!
Theres's lot of distortion pedal on the market... I could recommend some of them (no particuliar order )
Fulltone OCD
Zvex : box of rock
Catalinbread : supercharged od & dirty little secret
Wampler : plexidrive & pinnacle
CMATMODS : brownie (great & not expansive !!)
Carl Martin : plexitone
For me the tube screamer is great but it's more for smooth overdrive or boost pedal...
Alright, thanks for the input guys. I guess I'll just have to test all these pedals out myself and see what I feel sounds best!
Agree with Ivan n the Marshall pedals, especially the guvnor. or the money you are willing to spend take a look at the Tonebone stuff too, excellent tube driven pedals with loads of marshall grind, you really need to push a HRD to get some dirt out of it, I also like the OCD and wampler pinnacle.
That box of rock seems good from what I've read and some vids I've seen. But you never know with stomps until you try them yourself, what we hear through computer speakers etc. in youtube vids doesn't resemble the real thing really.
I'd love to try it, but I've never seen one in shops over here.
When it comes to Marshall, this is the stuff:

I would suggest you squeeze the budget a bit for this one, it will really pay out. You won't find better than this.
I would suggest trying to test out all the mentioned pedals. DS1 is a good pedal too (though can be a bit soft) but everyone had it at some time in their pedalboard. You will have to go to the store and test em with your guitar (and possibly on the same amp you have) and see which one sounds best to you.
