In case anybody missed it, 3G cell phone service will be shut down for good in 2022. For most folks they won't notice a thing. Not that many folks are still using 3G phone service in the states especially. Still, older folks, grand parents, etc. may still have a 3G flip phone or what not. These devices will be "Sunsetted" in 2022. If you have a relative still using an old phone, have them switch up. smile.gif If you happen to have an older tablet etc. with a cellular connection, it's worth having a look to make sure.

Bought a very inexpensive android phone a month ago to replace my old iphone4s.

Reason I kept that phone for so long was the portability (very small) and durability, but it just got too old.

Safe to say even the cheapest phones are really good today, I even tried games and worked fine. Android system gets some hate from apple users when switched but I have to disagree that the switch is hard to get used to.

is it a 3G phone? If it's a 4G phone it will be fine smile.gif Only 3G phones will be affected by the shut off.

Sadly, it's not going to do well after the big 'shut off" coming in 2022. I don't know how it will roll out for the rest of the world, but here in the states, 2G and 3G are being "sunsetted" next year.

Anchorage has 5G, 3G in some of the valley but out here where I live, we don't even have 3G. A great deal of Alaska doesn't even have 3G yet.

Speaking of phones, I miss the old physical keyboard/buttons/T9-layout from the old Nokia phones and such. I used to have a few of those. Nokia 3310, 5300 and my favorite was the Nokia 6300. They made 4G versions of some of the old ones, but of course the functionality is limited, though they have Facebook and such. A lot of stuff is app-based here in Denmark these days, ID security and such. However, the new 6300 is plastic and the old was metal, and the new one isn't getting good reviews. So I was looking around a bit for a phone with smart functionalities but also a keyboard. I have never tried a Blackberry, but it seems they might be releasing a new one soon:

It will probably be expensive. I don't know how well a Key 2 (2018, I think) would be perform these days, the price of that and so on.

EDIT: Seems Key 2 is not the way to go according to this:

This looks interesting too, F(x)tec Pro1 X:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/pro1-x-s...hoice-control#/

However, I've never paid more than about 150-200 USD for a phone smile.gif

Sadly, none of those built in qwerty keyboard phones are without serious flaws. I feel your pain though. I don't like on screen keyboards either. heck, I use a TACTILE CLICK keyboard as my main keyboard on my computer. Gamers are fond of these, and hackers, but most average users find the clicks very annoying.

You could always use a blutooth keyboard of just about any type with just about any phone that supports bluetooth. They even make some very small ones that fold up and fit in your pocket.

still, there is a demand fore physical keyboards so we will probably keep seeing new units with them. It's too bad these seem to run nearly a grand and use tech from 20 years ago.

Yeah, they're at least 700 USD it seems.

I do like the look of the Astro Slide 5G too - as well as the Pro 1X from Fx Tec. I like the idea of the phones that has a slide function for the keyboard, but still keeps the touch capabilities and screen size:

Sadly both of these are from fairly small vendors as far as I can tell which is usually not great for support. This is made worse by the fact that both have many more moving parts (they keyboard) than a standard smart phone. Just that many more things to break. And they are pricey as a bonus.

Hopefully a larger vendor will come up with a design as there is clearly demand for these types of units. til then, a small folding blutooth keyboard may be your best bet in terms of practicality and cost.

Yeah, it's just more so for being on the road or out. I don't use my phone very much at home, apart from in the morning and before bed, so in itself 700+ USD is a lot, but for being out and about having to carry a keyboard around seems less practical - even if foldable, it still looked at least as big as the phone. I'm keeping an eye on the Astro Slide 5G and Fx Tec though, but I'm not in a hurry to buy anything anyway. It would just be convenient to have a phone with physical buttons smile.gif

I think at least the Fx Tec Pro 1X can run any phone OS you want, which is kinda cool. I think it even supports dual booting. Maybe it was a different one, but one of them had that option.

Seems it was a different one. Can't find it now. Gonna have to look through my history smile.gif

Hopefully google or samsung, etc. will introduce a phone with a real keyboard in the coming years that would be affordable and supported. Hopefully smile.gif There is clearly a demand for this type of product, but not enough to merit a market segment anymore.

here are 10 phones with slide out keyboards. Some of these are almost vintage units at this point, but they are built by major suppliers and have good support for years to come. This comes in handy when the keys fail, as they usually do at some point.

https://www.tomostudio.com/best-slide-phones/

avoid the phones with 3g as it's going to be sunsetted next year. some of these designs date back to 2012. That seems to be the core issue. Most folks are happy with an onscreen keyboard so development of these units has gotten way more rare which is why you see phones being made on kickstarter and such.

But who knows, you may be able to find a great deal on one of those phones you mentioned on the used market or they might come down in price. so it might work itself out smile.gif

Saw this article on BBC today that BLACKBERRY has officially terminated service to every device running on it's operating system. It's been a slow and steady decline for some time now but they have finally pulled the plug. Many fans of the device were beside themselves with grief at having to finally give up these devices. They had a small but hard core following.
