GMC Forum _ GEAR & PRODUCTION _ Distortion Pedal

Posted by: Fsgdjv Nov 23 2007, 08:36 PM

I've just realised that I need a distortion pedal, so I'm just wondering if you could give me tips about what to get, or what not to get.

I've been thinking about the Boss MT-2, it seems good and it costs about what I feel I want to spend, but I've also heard that it has way too much treble, and I'm not a big fan of too much treble. I'm not a fan of the sound where you kill all the mids either, if that makes any difference.

And, lastly, I will be using the pedal for something doom/death metal/postrock-ish, so I'll need something that would fit for that.

I hope this was enough information for me to get some help, I'm a complete noob when it comes to pedals rolleyes.gif

MT2 has pots for bass, treble and middle. It also has additional pot for adjusting the midds frequency. Plenty of room for versatility if you ask me. I know a lot of people who uses this as their fisrt metal pedal. THey were satisfied but bere in mind that the sound is (for most of them and myself too) a little bit too sintetic.

I personally think the MT-2 does kill on treble, you dont get a beefy sound out of it, its kinda thin on the air.

Doom's quite heavy on the fuzzy bass sound but that varies from band to band, more specifically what do you want to sound like?

Well for metal, I use Metal Muff. Its versatile for any kind of metal that you might be looking for. Ive played it in thrash and old school death metal. Never tried black metal to it but im sure you can get a good black metal tone out of any distortion pedal.

As for post-rock, sorry but Metal Muff wouldn't cut it. Although you could try but I could never get a tone to work for me. Try it out.

I have heard very good things about the Digitech DF-7, but if you don't want to spend as much money, I picked up a mint Digitech Death-Metal pedal for 20 bucks on Ebay - it does the job biggrin.gif

I use to own a Digitech Death Metal. Sounds way too trebley. Not versatile at all. Its not even good for death metal itself.

Owen: As far as sound goes, it would be good if it sounded a bit like Novembers Doom, or maybe something like Agalloch on Ashes Against the Grain and Ulver on Bergtatt. But the most important thing is that I don't want too much treble, I want it kind of beefy, I think that's all I need to be happy.

VinceG: Yeah, I had the feeling that I couldn't get something for both metal and post rock, but then metal would be the main goal I guess. I'll check out the metal muff, looks nice.
