I saw this video, and I wanted to be able to do what Kurikinton fox does.
Not to mention I'm a video game nerd, so that made this video that much more amazing for me.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Yz3RF4AcY7s
He has some pretty good original songs posted up on youtube as well.
Wow thats pretty amazing. Very clean. I love final fantasy 5 (also abit of a game nerd)
My biggest inspiration is probably John Petrucci. Every time I watch one of his videos it makes me realise how bad I am (in comparison) at the guitar - but in a way that I think "I wish I could do that - I'm going to go practice".
Still....Progress is slow and I need another good 3-5 years yet lol
But the band to make me start learning guitar was actually Nightwish heheh
Absolutely awesome, great guitar playing, and i love Final Fantasy as well, especially FF5, one of the first ones i played.
My biggest inspiration is music in general, if i had to pick specific musicians, i'd pick Dave Murray, Adrian Smith and Janick Gers of Iron Maiden, and porbably Steve Vai.
The people that made me start play guitar was my dad, dave murray and adrian smith(iron maiden).
But the people who kicked me in the ass and made me play for real was probably SRV, johnny winter, Kris of course, and my dad again
John Petrucci is my current inspiration (his Rock Discipline videos are not only awesome, the spoofs are hilarious)
My inital, "omg I need to play that," was Kirk Hammet from Metallica
SRV and Herman Li (despite the controversy over him on this board ) are also big ones for me.
My guitar instructor and personal friend, jeff.
So many people. I couldn't list them all here.
Ironically my dad plays pretty well (but he's a natural player, only having gotten good over 30+ years, doesn't know any scales, etc) but he never taught me anything.
My Uncle is an incredible guitar player, he can play the blues so dam good, and he doesnt know a single note, scale, chord, or anything!! he doesnt know what an 8th note or a quarter note is, but he can still shred it up and still be in time! its awsome to see.
My dad sat me down and had me listen to all his Paco De Lucia and Al Dimiola Vynil. First thing I thought was I want to play like that.
Noone - I was totally fascinated by guitars at an early age and wanted to be able to play them for as long as I can remember.
Thinking about it some more, I just realized, it must have been my uncle - he had a Watkins Rapier and would play Buddy Holly songs to me when I was about 5, I think it all stemmed from that!
My first and still inspirations are:
Slash, Kris, Jimmy Page, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammett, and alot more!
Man where do I start ?
Big Influences of mine are john frusicante, rusty cooley, michael angelo batio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammett, and everyone here at Gmc. Knowing that there are people all around the world working as hard as I am to be good at the guitar is a big inspiration. And also Troy grady is huge. He is an amazing guitarit and his perception on life and the guitar is also great.
Top 3 would be.
1. Troy Grady
2. John frusicante
3. Kirk Hammett
-John
1.Jeff Hanna
2.Jimi Hendrix
3.Dave Mustaine
4.Peter Frampton
5.Steve Vai
6.Randy Rhoads
7.Jimmy Page
8.Bruce Dickinson
9.The Satch!!! Nuff said!
Steve vai
Jon(shadows fall)
John Petrucci(dream theatre)
Joe Satriani
Michael Romeo (symphany x)
Mikael Akerfeldt(OPETH!)\
those are the new guys
from way back when
Eddie, jimi few others but im lazy
I'd have to say Jerry Cantrell and Randy Rhoads. I'm a huge AIC fan and c'mon Ozzy with Randy was just the coolest thing ever.
Clapton, SRV, steve vai, Hendrix, jeff loomis (nevermore), frank gambale, john mayer, and john petrucci.
1. Daron Malakian
2. Kirk Hammett
3.Tom Morrelo
Tom Morello and Jimmy Page
My inspiration is SO varied... Starting from Stained, to Muse, to players like Vai Satch Timmons and Gilbert, some Israeli bands, all the way to vocal virtuosos like Christina Auguilera even. and in general, everytime I hear a song on the radio I want to grab my guitar and jam!
It all started with the offspring, I started loving music then and Just had to play their music. Then it was AC/DC for a good 7 months. By then I had gotten sick of playing because I had no discipline. THen I heard the song master of puppets by metallica, that made me play 2-3 hours a day wich lead me to my current neoclassical fetish of malmsteen and the more brutal metal like grave and Children of Bodom. I love and respect metallica with all my heart and say what you want about Kirk hammett, I know he's not a genius or anything but he sounds so.. perfect
For me, the shortlist would have to be (in no particular order)
1) Alex Lifeson
2) Randy Rhoads
3) Ritchie Blackmore
4) Joe Satriani
5) John Frusciante
6) Tom Morello
There's probably more, but those guys would be my primary inspirations.
Here is a bit more compiled list of what inspires me.
1) Dave Murray, Adrian Smith, Janick Gers Of Iron Maiden
2) Steve Vai
3) Any Good music and/or guitarist or musician
4) Good Movies
5) Good Books
6) People
7) Life and all its Experiences that come with it
I try to keep things fresh and new, Thanks
steve vai
U2's the Edge inspired me to pick up guitar and learn.
More recent guitarists who inspire me to be better are;
Paul Gilbert
Buckethead
Steve Vai
GMC Instructors!
Before I started playing it was no guitarist in particular, just good songs inspired me, like a lot of Ulver, Isis, Opeth, At the Gates, etc.
Now my biggest inspirations are:
Mikael Åkerfeldt
Peter Lindgren
Slash
Blakkheim
Dan Swanö (more as an allround musician than as a guitarist though)
etc.
Kristopher Dahl
hmmm.....
-Jim Erickson
-the guitarist from STYX
-Hendrix
-John Mayer
-Pat Martino
-Every pop-punk, alternative, indie, etc. band that I listen to and love but whose guitarists totally suck. I've always wanted to start a sort of pop-ish band that actually has good guitar in it (alongside good vocals and songwriting).
Kirk Hammet was my first influence - he's not any more!!!
Than come Steve Vai (the biggest one), Satch, Michael Angelo, Rusty Cooley, Luca Turilli and the newest one is Enric Garcia from Dark Moor.
IMO kirk hammet is a sloppy player. hetfeilds riffing drives metallica along but, god they let kirk solo too much.
Was Hendrix for me, when i seen a dvd of him playing at woodstock. And he is still my favourite.
Kirk Hammett originally inspired me...but, John Petrucci is probably my biggest influence.
So, my previous post stands, but I don't get all the kirk hammett hate! It's not just here, it just seems to me that no one likes kirk. Then again, a lot of people think metallica sold out and won't listen to them anymore (I think that's ridiculous).
So, why the hate on kirk? I think he's amazing. So what if he's sloppy?
So question, Kirk is a sloppy player, but by what means?? His speed, muting, or timing?? What makes him a sloppy player??
Sloppy player means he's not playing clean and he could use more practice! That's generally that!
the reason I started playing the guitar was because I was really interested in it, so there was, at first, no real influence, that made me playing, but later, when I saw my friends playing together I got a huge boost and I wanted it more than ever. I didn't know a lot of the great guys like Yngwie or Petrucci at that time, but I think, if I had known them it would have also been my friends, because I saw it live and it just impressed me a lot!
well, today there's another guitarplayer that I really like and I think some of you may laugh at me but it's Jack White. I think he's a great guitarplayer, he creates catchy riffs and uses many styles which makes him a versatile player, so he has a huge influence at me at the moment!
Dimebag Darrel, James Hetfield and ofc Zakk Wylde
Kirk Hammet
Slash
Zakk Wylde
are all some of my influences.
But I dont gey why everyone everyone says Hammet is sloppy
he might not be as clean as Ywingie or Steve Vai but there is a reason
why like three of Mettalicas solos are in the top 50 solos of all time
I CANT STAND Kirks "solos", if you can call them that. it all seems so routine, theres no feeling.
Well i guess it's like that because those charts where created 10 years ago when Metallica was something new. Those charts are never renewed or reviewed. And they are also as dumb as those TOP 10 guitarists charts. It's all based on someone's opinion.
You know - how can you decide which orchestra plays better? You ca! Give them all the same symphony to play and then you'll see which orchestra plays with more feeling, more expression, more in style of music period when the piece was written. But rock music is TOTALLY opinion based.
Personally I would have rewritten those top 100 guitarists and top 100 solos of all time lists, but kirk is still way up there in both of those. There's a lot I'd like to add to both lists though. I agree that Metallica hasn't been as good as in the past, but I still really liked everything they did post black album with the exception of St. Anger.
Yeah there are a lot of new solos that could be way up there but I still think
Hammets playing is not sloppy
PS- Pavel I do think that the top 100 guitarists is a complete joke theres just to many unknown great guitarists to do that
Getting into discussions like this gets me into trouble with guitarists, but it's fun...
You guys are forgetting something in the talk about sloppy playing. Who are the guys who are known for making a bigger impact on rock? Cobain, Plant and Hendrix and Hammett affected the world of music a lot more than Buckethead, Petrucci and Vai will. Album sales isn't everything, of course but it's hard to change the world with music that only music majors and guitar players are going to understand.
That said, I am looking into starting lessons from a neoclassical player towards the end of the summer. I think that the theory I'd pick up along the way would be more helpful to what I want to do (meaning, more than just guitar), and I think learning to play that way would help prepare me to be able to play whatever comes to mind.
So I don't want anyone to think that I don't value skill and clean technique....if I didn't, I wouldn't be here. I just think that one is better equipped to break the rules when one knows what the rules are.
Now that I think of it, I didn't really answer the question. I like guitar a bit messed up. I like the old blues players with cheap, nasty guitars. I like guys that make a mess with them like Ministry and Nirvana. Neil Young's Weld album just rocked my world. And Dick Dale.
Odd as it sounds I wanted to learn the Sax but it was too expensive (wanted to be John Coltraine or Michael Brecker). I ended up with an old Ibanez Silver Series Strat copy as it was cheap. Musical taste then diverged as a teenager and the first guitar solo I wanted to learn was The Only Ones 'Another Girl Another Planet' (still love that song).
As I got more into guitar influences/those I admire became:
Allan Holdsworth
Mike Stern
Steve Vai
Pat Metheny
Mike Goodrick
Pat Martino
Uli Jon Roth
Frank Gambale
Joe Pass
Cheers,
T
I first started out listening to my uncle play alot of deep purple, Jimi Hendrix guitar type stuff when i was about 4 or 5. I loved watching him play all the different guitars and amps he had. Unfortunately he died when i was about 5 and a half but i really got into guitar listening to the 2 old records i found, these being dity deeds done dirt cheap and back in black by acdc. From there i got really inspired by black sabbath and then metallica.
My fascination with Metallica and the Kirk Hammett solos is kinda starting to wear off now and im really begging to get back into Black Sabbath, along with Ozzy and Black Label Society and Pantera.
I have no idea wot it is about Zakk, Randy and Dimebag , but they just inspire me so much, their solos are nuts
Would be cool to know who else agrees with me
hmmmm
1.clapton
2.keller williams
3.tommy emmanuel
First of all: Rory Gallagher, a shy man, but an immensly powerful performer, then Alvin Lee, from Ten Years After, his 'Slow blues in C' is one of the finest pieces of guitarwork I know, and Brian My....
I had some of the best talent of the time during my youth...Clapton in Cream, Hendrix, of course, Frampton in Humble Pie, Ronnie Montrose, Beck, Page, than Schenker, Gorham, Moore, etc...way too many to mentioin here
malmsteen!!
I have been influenced by different musicians but I could say that steve vai influenced me to play better.
he said this:
"If you want to be a virtuoso then you have to set your sights above me. You have to go beyond what I'm doing. And that's for you to figure out. Because if you can do that, then I'm going to be trying to go beyond you." STEVE VAI
gabriel.-
Main influences:
Nuno Bettencourt, Steve Vai, Satch, Vernon Reid, Paul Gilbert, John Petrucci, EVH, etc. etc.
i was first inspired by jimmy page, slash, hendrix, evh, and others.
now i have added more to the list,
vai, satch, malmsteen, gilbert, cooley, etc
Not to sound corny or anything, but this site did(inspire me to play BETTER).
Before I had come across this site I was just fooling around picking up bad habits and not getting any better.
Once I found this site, I've become more disciplined and have gotten rid of a couple of my worst habits. I still don't play as much as I would like(2 year old daughter, wife in nursing school, etc), but I have noticed a quite large increase in the quality of my play since finding this site a few months ago.
EDIT: I first started playing/took lessons when I was in the 9th grade(I'm 35yo now). My dad asked me if I wanted to play guitar because I was always playing air guitar along with songs. I said yes, he bought me a guitar/amp and I took lessons for about 3-4 months. I quit practicing and didn't pick up a guitar again until I was a freshman in college. My roommate and the guy across the hall played guitar. I bought one for about $50 at a flea market type place and began fooling around again. I really didn't start to improve until I was a senior because I just didn't put in the time.
So, to make a long story short, those bands I was playing air guitar along with were AC/DC, Ozzy and Iron Maiden. From there I was turned onto Metallica and Slayer.
Well for me it was Petrucci. And the more I listned to Queen, Dream Theater... the more a played.
I didn't originally choose to play guitar because of a certain player. It was more because of it's versatility, just all of the amazing things you can do with a guitar. After that, discovering new bands and new styles of playing increased my interest in guitar, by revealing to me what I could do if I learned how to play and I practiced enough. Everytime I discovered a new style of music that I enjoyed, it opened up new opportunities.
Randy Rhoads here too...hes my idol to me hes not really dead. cause i like see him in his videos every day....and listen to his music constantly RIP Rhoads
Petrucci...Kirk Hammett...Satch...Steve Vai.......
AND RANDY RHOADS man....~!
Sadly, one day while player Guitar Hero i was completey beasting and said, "why not try to have a go at real guitar, i know i wont like it but ill try...." and so i typed in "how to play guitar" on google and found a site and started learning.
So i can say that guitar hero inspired me....
1. jimi hendrix
At first it was Kirk Hammet and then moved onto
Zakk Wylde
Marty Friedman
Joe Satriani
SRV
Alex Skolnick
Pavel, Marcus Lavendell and of course Kristofer dahl!
Buckethead and Randy Rhoads are two players that make me never want to stop practising. I can look at most other guitarists and think things like "oh hey this guy is good" but the aforementioned two really stand out for me due to their beautiful beautiful songwriting and flawless execution.
yngwie johann malmsteen
Brian May and Kirk Hammett are my guitar-heroes
I've seen them both live in action, which is really amazing and very inspiring !
I like the smooth licks and delay sounds of Brian, in combination with his unique guitar he creates a great sound.
Kirk is just a amazing to see live. He plays so fast and so well.
He amazes me everytime again and again !
Jimmy Page
David Gilmour
Slash
Hendrix
Clapton....
I would have to say my two biggest reasons for playing guitar are B.B. King and Eric Clapton I love watching them play it's almost as though they don't even have to try they look like it is just a part of them.
I first wanted to learn guitar after hearing a few of John Lee Hookers old albums. I always loved the blues and to hear him play with such feeling made me buy my first guitar.
In the beginning, Steve Vai - Tender Surrender inspired me to play the Electric Guitar, and when i saw the G3 Dvd's, Joe Satriani inspired me to go further with everything he's my hero now..
There are more awesome guitarist that inspires me a lot, but the main.. that inspired me is, Steve Vai and Joe Satriani
In the early beginning...Gilmour,Knopfler,Satch,Hammet,Malmsteen,Gambale,Murray & Smith,Vai etc.
During years the list became too big and crowded.
Karl Sanders- Nile
Chuck Schuldiner- Death era Scream Bloody Gore to Spiritual Healing
Bill Taylor- Immolation
Of course Dimebag but also Kirk Hammet, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler ect. even people like Chuck Berry helped inspire me.
3 songs i dont know how to play!
Yeah, if you could do Maiden Lessons for actual maiden songs that would be cool!
Maybe in the future.
My musical tastes arnt as varied as they should be, i know I SHOULD listen to more artists but then, only a few really inspire me. Buckethead is the guy who inspires me to progress, i watch him before i play most days and i just want to be a better player because of him!
My main inspiration has to be Brian May, followed by SRV, Hendrix, Paul Crook, Todd Rundgren, Steve Vai, Angus Young, Chuck Berry, Jimmie Vaughan, Joe Perry, Randy Rhodes, Zakk Wylde, The Nuge, Billy Gibbons, EVH, BB King, Dimebag Darrell, Phil Collen, Steve Clark, , Tony Iommi, Clapton and many many others. They have all inspired me to play guitar, and to get better.
None of them are really in order except Brian and Stevie...
mine would be jimi hendrix, tommy emmanuel and eric clapton
Vivian Campbell, Gary Moore, Paul Samson.. some of the early ones, later on Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, George Lynch, Paul Gilbert ... loads and loads
There are many guitarists who inspired me, but the guitarists that just blew me away were John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Brian May, Jimmy Page, Paul Gilbert, Randy Rhoads, Steve Vai, SRV, Kirk Hammet, Joe Satriani, Marty Friedman, Alex Lifeson, and Ritchie Blackmore.
I know there are others that have also but it will take way too long to list all of them.
SLASH
Go Slash! Oh, yeah!
Jimmy Hendrix
Kirk Hammond (Metallica)
Steve Murray (Iron Maiden)
Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
David Gilmore (Pink Floyd)
Steve Vai
Gary Moore (especially "Out in the fields")
Thilo Herrmann (Running Wild)
Herman Lee
and surely much many more from who i forgot the names ... shame on me, but i am not good in remembering names at all...
Everyone inspires me to be the better musician. Sometimes it is enough to hear some of SRV and the guy just makes me wanna play for ten more years nonstop The guitarist who does THAT is truly a great guitarist
My inspiration comes from 2 guitarrists:Emppu from Nightwish and Kirk Hammett from Metallica. Of course there are many inspirations since I try to come up with various things from different styles but, overall, these are the main figures
Many different musicians inspire me, a few of my favourite guitarists are:
Alexi Laiho
Michael Akerfeldt
Yngwie
Theodore Ziras
Vai
Metallica was the band that inspired me to play guitar.I just became a huge fan and once i started playing guitar i had to learn all there songs. That time used to be really fun ,now i just practice lead and technique. They played a huge role in me wanting to play guitar
For a few months now i am listening to Manticora and their stuff really drives me crazy because of it's awesomeness! Awesome solos, awesome riffing, great musicianship and compositions - it's really a high-quality band. Unfortunately pretty unknown.
That would be the band which gives me inspiration for the metal riffing lessons i already did and am planning to do
Manticora are brilliant, there arrangements are just, unparalleled.
+1 to Empuu, his solo on Dead Boys Poem is beautiful, hell any of his solos or riffs are beautiful.
yeah, I'm like that, but after watching the G3 with Vai and Satch, the Denver one....phew, I was blown away!
And then again when I watched the Tokyo G3,....and then again with Dream Theater Budokan DVD......so many!
but personally....the guitarists I respect the most are Rob Ramos and Jake Kiley of Strung Out
Mine is kind of weird.
When I was 14, I saw this movie "Eddie and the Cruisers 2"
I watched that movie about 50 times total. It totally inspired me to play.
I'd be curiosu to know if anyone else saw it. It's an old late 80s movie...
Well the main influence on me to start playing and everything were the Beatles....I get very inspired when i go to a concert or watch one on TV...After that I feel all charged up and ready to rock
Definitely Steve Vai and Guthrie Govan, when ever I see them play I just wanna play more so that I could some day be as good as them!
My 2 first inspirations back in 1992 were David Gilmour and Slash, but know I have to say with total honesty that my inspiration to play better every das is MURIS VARAJIC.
Jack White of the White Stripes really made me love Rock music again. He is a great guitarist especially when he does old Blues songs like Death Letter. Really powerful, he reminds me of Jimmy Page.
John petrucci by miles. I could name about 20 more.
Anyway the main reason why I got back to play guitar is because INTERNET (tabs, forums, stream videos, information) and the new SOFTWARE (GP5) . To me, these two have made the path so much easier and enjoyable. If I am not wrong it's got to be many many more like me going through the same experience as me out there.
what actually got me inspired to play guitar, was guitar hero
i heard all those great songs and i thought to myself, man would it be cool to do that, so i went out a while later and picked up a epi LP junior which im still playing on 3 years later(but soon im going to buy and ESP )
CC Deville, Eddie Van Halen, Angus Young, Slash, and Allen Collins were probably the main ones who inspired me. My dad always likes to play the stuff he listened to in the 80s on the radio, when he saw I liked it, he just got me a guitar hoping that I would be playing his favorite songs all the time. Nowadays...not so much, and he still doesn't grasp the fact that there is SOOO much more to guitar than cover songs.
I actually originally wanted to play drums for the longest time, but my parents didnt want to get me a set, so scratch that idea. Well one day I was at my friends house (back in gradde like 5 or something ) and he played Back in Black on an acoustic and i was astonished (I was a big ACDC fan) The next day I bought a guitar and haven't looked back on it.
Hendrix, Clapton, Hammett, Slash, Page, Richards/May, Angus Young and Niel Young are my main reasons for playing the guitar.
But lately Lavendell, Wallimann and Muris, and the rest of the GMC instructor team joined their ranks.
For me i like many many guitarists but only a few have inspired me those are;
- Jake E. Lee (Dio/Ozzy Osbourne)
- Kirk Hammet (Metallica)
- Jay Lacey Aka. Jason V (The Berzerker)
- Matt Tuck (Bullet For My Valentine)
- Yngwie Malmsteen (Alcatrazz)
- Juan M. Valero
- Muris Varajic
- Kristopher Dahl
When I practice I have the album 'Get Out Of My Yard' by Paul Gilbert on my desk.
On the front he looks really grumpy and disapproving, so whenever I start to get bored or tired I look at the picture and think: 'Paul is still not happy with my playing'.
[font=Arial][size=3]Jimmy Page, EVH, Jimi Hendrix, Herman Li, Yngwie Malmsteen, Kirk Hammett (before the black album), and Robby Krieger all inspired me to play guitar better.
I like BB King, SRV, and Steve Miller. My favorite axe man is James Young of the band STYX. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDmzeW2BxVk
Our Instructor Muris. Man that dude can not only play but his compositions are breathtaking.
Peace.
I've been inspired by many different guitarists over the years, but if I remember correctly, I think it started when I was around 13, and I saw the video for "Yankee Rose" by David Lee Roth (featuring Mr. Steve Vai on guitar), and was totally amazed...got my first electric guitar soon afterwards.
SRV and Rory Gallagher - I already played classical, but when I heard those two play i just had to find a way to learn electric!
Spelling
I'd have to say the first time I ever saw Wake Up Dead and Peace Sells on the old Headbangers Ball, (It wasn't even called that back then, I think) I immediately got an insatiable desire to learn to play guitar. So I blame Dave Mustaine.
I suppose the first person who inspired me was Richie Blackmore I still think his playing with Deep Purple was superb.
Other guitarists that I like and would love to emulate are Dave Gilmour, Steve Lukather, Mark Knopfler, Santanna, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson and Neal Schon
i remember about 2 years ago i was only a guitar n00b and didnt know much at all, i listened to Red Hot Chili Peppers often and saw like one video of john frusciante, playing on a gretch jazz guitar, so i thought "im gonna get one of those and start learning guitar!" then as my knowledge grew in the guitar world, found out loads of things, and somehow got myself into satch and vai and co. lol strange, but yes, i am inspired by a former 24/7 drug abuser anyhow hes reformed a long time ago now and is a healthy person again except all his teeth had to be pulled out and replaced with fake ones coz he got horric gum diseas that wouldve killed him
i'v always wanted to learn since i was little but i never really had the patience and then when my father gifted away his acoustic the thought to try again hit me. But as far as inspiration i'd have to say Slash and Eric Clapton are the biggest ones.
Hans Zimmer inspired me....not that he's a guitarist, but his music is freakin' awesome
Steve Vai, Jhon Petrucci and of course... Paul Gilbert!!!
Lately a huge amount of my inspiration has come from Mikael Akerfeldt. I just think he's a great musician overall, who can do many styles greatly, and at the same time seems to be a down to earth and funny guy. Of course many others mentioned in this thread, and I STILL don't get the kirk hammett hate
Oh, this could be a very long list, but I'll try to keep it short.
In some kind of chronological order:
Inspiration to play better came (mostly) from Joe Satriani.
There was various other players that inspired me to start and to keep on going though.
I have to add MARKUS LAVENDELL to my list, what a way to play with amounts of feelling and impeccable technique, I just can't stop watching his videos.
I would say to pick up the guitar it was the metallica stuff but to want to take it to the next level has been Zakk Wylde for solo purposes and for melody purpose is Steven Wilson.
1. hendrix
2. Tommy Emmanuel
3. Chet Atkins
Every guitarist or musicians that I like, and there are so many!!
Well, there's a lot of people who have inspired me, since there's a lot of good guitarists out there. But out of everyone, there's only a "few" whom I remember the name and music. Those are, in no specific order:
- Andrew White
- Gary Moore
- Joe Satriani
- Antoine Dufour
- Andy McKee
- All GMC Instructors =)
- Matthew Santos
- Carlos Santana
- Elias Viljanen
- Gregory Hoskins
Most Candyrat Records artists really.. A record company that have artists with real talent.
I would have to say my top five in no particular order who inspired me the most as a player.
1. Randy Rhoads
2. George Lynch
3. Ritchie Blackmore
4. Adrian Vandenberg
5. Rudolph Schenker
There are many others along the way, you kinda go thru phases, right now i am on a Kiko Loureiro excursion. He rocks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQL2cLE7HpA
This song is the bomb
Daniel
When I first started it was all about Kirk Hammett and I still call Metallica my favorite band. But now, there are a lot of guitar players that influence me some of the biggest I can think of now is:
Chuck Schuldiner
Jeff Loomis
Chris Broderick
Shannon Hamm
Muhammed Suicmez
Alexi Laiho
So many more
my first influence was Richie Sambora - I started playing because of him...
From then on mostly Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather...
But ofc I love lots and lots of other great players that keep on inspiring me song after song...
slash mostly, then Brian May, MAB, and EVH
Joe Satriani was the first Solo Guitarist I started listen to. Steve Vai and Eric Johnson are two guys I have learnd a lot from. but my biggest insperation is Muris I, for sure, had not been as good as I am today without Muris. Thank you man!
Angus young first, then chuck berry, then came SRV, then the Lynryd Skynyrd guitarist, satriani too and alot more tooo!
Pete Townsend(loved the who when I was a lil nipper)
Keith richards(got my old man to thank for playing stones stuff realy loud)
Steve Jones(Loved the pistold big time, and still think steve is cool)
Malmsteen(He changed my direction on guitar to actualy work out solos!)
Vai(hate his solo stuff but with DLR he was a rock god!)
paul Gilbert(MR big!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Tony macalpine(Maximum security is a classic album)
Vinnie moore(time odessey is perfection)
Greg Howe(great solo player with groove, just wish his comps sounded better on whole)
Andy timmons(great high tech bluesy phraisng and blazing)
Brett Garsed(damm near the perfect guitarist, cant fault him!)
Over the years, I've been inspired by too many to name. The usual top players come to mind, of course.
But with the advent of Youtube and GMC, relative unknowns have been my primary source of inspiration. It's cool to see normal people playing their butts off on Youtube. Gustavo Guerra is phenomenal! And thanks to GMC, I've discovered amazing talent like Marcus, Emir, and Muris to name a few.
It's so encouraging to watch these guys play so well, and realize that all one has to do is put in the time, along with the proper method, of course. Watching Muris play is both inspiring and frustrating. And have you checked out Zsolts' new lesson?
These guys are all smoking guitar players who can play with, and in many cases, outplay the best there is.
GMC has put these maniacs in our living rooms, for all intents and purposes, for valuable looks into their personal styles and how they achieve their incredible technique.
You don't get this kind of input from big name talent.
I guess what I'm saying is that in many ways, GMC has gone a long way to reignite my passion for playing, thanks to the pool of amazing talent they provide.
lately; Emir Hot, Mark Morton, Travis Stever, Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel.
Cool topic, my list of favorite guitarists always change, as I grow musically I appreciate different things I didn't appreciate before, and mind less about others.
My first inspiration to pick up the guitar was Slash, he had memorable lines that stuck in my head, my first solos were Patience, Don't cry, Welcome To the Jungle, and then almost everything Slash played.
Then it was Kirk Hamett, I heard the unforgiven solo and at the time I thought it was amazing, and I learned my first Metallica solo, then Kirk Hamett's One solo helped me discover tapping, I realize now when I hear his solos that they are not technical, and as someone said he is a little sloppy, and his bends are sometimes flat with no vibrato, I hear that now, but didn't back then. That doesn't take away the fact that I started shredding because of Kirk, I practiced Fade to black solo Night and day, I learned my first shred tricks from kirk Hammett and I am thankful to Metallica and Kirk for writing great inspiring music, it kept me going. Yes Fade to black could be played better by a very technical clean guitar player, but can you Imagine a super clean Neo-classical version of a Kirk Hammett's solo, it wouldn't fit the music, Kirk Hammet's style although sloppy and imprecise at times fits Metallica's music perfectly, he has his sound and has created memorable solos that will live on forever.
The next one was Malmsteen, my uncle wanted to show me how much I sucked at guitar and gave me a tape of Rising Force, I was blown away. I didn't have access to tabs or anything and listened for hours, I figured out my first neo-classical licks on my one, by sticking a pencil on to the cassette tape player to slow it down.
Then he did the same to me with Vai, Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Tony Mcalpine, and other guitar heroes from the 80's but I was fascinated with Yngwie's neo-classical so he had much more impact on my playing
The Next was Petrucci, a friend invites me to his house to watch the Live in Tokyo concert, and I see Under a Glass moon for the first time, Again blown away, but this time I managed to get a hold of the Tab book, and practiced for hours days weeks and months the Under a Glass Moon Solo.
I can honestly say that was the last time I sat down to analyze and copy a certain style, from then on I picked up little things from others, I admire Paul Gilbert's shred style and dynamics, SRV's awesome jaw dropping bends and vibrato, Mark Knopfler's awesome lead lines played straight from the heart, and I could go on forever.
The latest single guitar player I admire, and can't get enough of is Guthrie Govan, my god what a tone, phrasing, amazing shred, and lots of emotion.
Then for some time now my main source of inspiration is GMC.
Lately. Watching people like Jose Mena and Muris play is just inspiring. It makes you think that it is a realistic goal to want to play fast like players like EJ and Paul Gilbert.
Its just inspiring
It's always been Kirk Hammett. His bluesy metal-licks made me jump around in my room, I just can't get enough of them. And of course because of his solos in the early Metallica-time.
I would have to say Steve Vai first and foremost. When I saw the guitar duel in the movie Crossroads in the 80's, it changed my life! Also, Stevie Ray Vaughan. I have never in my life watched someone play guitar and have it look more natural than him. The guitar truely looks like a part of his body when he played.
Slash. I picked up the guitar because of him!
The first band that inspired me to play guitar was blink-182, but the one person in the world that has inspired me to go further technically in guitar and work as hard as I do is no one else than Kristoffer Dahl!
If you take it into a wider perspective, I think Nightwish and Marcus Lavendell were the people who got me into classical music, piano, music-arranging/composing and therefore made me develop as much as I have musically
Ten thousand thanks to all of you!
Luca Turilli
Alexei Laiho
Andre Olbrich
Marcus Siepen
Hizaki.. one of the best guitarist i've ever heard about He's solos are melodic and I could listen to him all the time =p

Until I was 11 I thought all metal guitar sounded basically the same until I heard buckethead (Brian Charol) Now a days i like his acoustic stuff better than his metal but soothsayer and jump man still rock. You don't really have respect for a guitarist until you know how mind blowingly difficult it is to learn guitar.
Despite their bad reputation, Dragonforce was actually the band that inspired me to pick up the guitar. Steve Vai was the one though that inspired my playing the most. I love his sound. Lately I've been getting into guys like Al di meola and Pat Martino's acoustic guitar work.
Over the years, the influences have been many. I fell in love with the guitar after hearing Sunshine of Your Love by Cream, and Journey to the Center of the Mind by Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. That was back in 1968!
I didn't pick up the guitar until 1972 when the Allman Brothers Live at Fillmore East was popular, and I also discovered Hendrix by then. I didn't start playing seriously until I heard Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin through the 70s. I also was into the Who and Deep Purple during this time.
I was first completely blown away when Eddie Van Halen became popular in 1978. I listened to Van Halen records until they were completely worn out.
The next really big moment was Yngwie. I also was into Al DiMeola and Carlo Santana during this period.
Then, like Jose Mena, I became interested in the new wave of shredders and guitar monsters like Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Joe Satriani, and Steve Vai.
I still listen to all these guys as well as Steve Morse, Eric Johnson, Greg Howe, John Petrucci, and Guthrie Govan.
It's interesting how guitar playing has evolved over the years. The biggest change is in the gear. It's so much easier to get the sound you are looking for, and to analyze your favorite player, and cop his licks.
I personally think that Guthrie Govan is the current state of the art guitarist. He is the one I would analyze to cop licks. Playing his style of fusion requires a gift that I'm lacking. But, if I slow down his licks on the Tascam Guitar Trainer, I can get a true insight into those awesome outside licks that I so crave. I can then incorporate them into my style and increase the sophistication of my personal lick vocabulary.
Another fusion guitar player to analyze is Chris Poland. And another one is Brett Garsed!
I really love where guitar is in relation to these players, (including Greg Howe). To me, the fusion aspect of electric guitar is where it's at.
My influences are many, and change over time. I'm waiting for the next monster. Maybe it's one of you. Muris, are you listening?
Very nice story Frank, seems you like alot of great guitarists, extra props for mentoning Greg Howe! He is still one of my favorites.
I didn't see some of my favorites there but Yngwie was the first one to make me want to play guitar for good and why I got one. As far as inspiration too many to list but my favorite is Eric Johnson and also Satriani (this guy can write like no one else) and after that so many that it's hard to say. Even newer ones or younger ones like Cesar Huesca and Gustavo Guerra inspire me alot. The dedication alone inspires alot.
Most technical or best? That's impossible to answer when you get to the level of all those guys, they're all "BEST".
One thing I'll say in my opinion Jeff Beck is very overrated.
Fun topic, you can really see our early teen years were very formative. For me hands down it was 3 bands not guitar players. Ozzy (Randy Rhoads) Dokken (George Lynch), Judas Priest (K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton). Now this is just the tip of the iceberg as once you get the fever anything good is game
tommyboy
Lately I've been getting extremely inspired by three guitarists. Paul Gilbert, Buckethead and Fredrik Åkesson.
Paul Gilbert for his overall playing, whenever I hear any of his songs I just want to sit down and play guitar and really improve. I feel like he is the perfect rock guitarist. I especially admire how he can control bends and vibrato more than anyone I've seen. In general it's probably his complete control over the guitar that makes me so inspired.
Buckethead has lately inspired me a lot in more mellow playing, I've been listening to electric tears for about once a day for the last 2-3 months and I would kill for that kind of phrasing.
And Fredrik Åkesson basically has one of the best vibratos I have ever heard, so I tend to listen a lot to his stuff (ok, just Watershed with Opeth and some Krux, but the Watershed material has most solos with a lot of vibrato, so I tend to mostly listen to that) and just try to play and make my vibrato just a bit more like his.
The Pink Floyd solos were the ones that inspired me the most at the very beginning. I wanted to play like David Gilmour, to experiment with tones and effects like him, and to explore guitar as he did.
Then came Petrucci, who inspired me to really dig into shredding.
Now there are many-many guitarist I like to listen to, I could name these people in an endless list, but there is no point of it, I just listen to them, either in bands or as solo musicians (from John Frusciante to Fredrik Thordendal, from Brian May to Bob Marley etc.)
But considering the time i spend online on GMC, i have to admit that our amazing instructors also have a HUGE influence on me (and I won't just name a few, because i would have to name the 60 or so guitarists making this site the best... that again would be too long)
Steve Vai and Satch definately! I've heard plenty of other guys since that influence me to. But that's what got me going.
Kris's intro video really motivated to take "guitar seriously" to be honest.
First I was inspired by David Gilmour and Jimmy Page and they were the reason why I started learning guitar.
Lately it has been Paul Gilbert 1st Because I really like is playing is so balanced just plain awesome then in 2nd we have is personality he is not a complete ass just because he plays very good. He is humble and a true friend of his public!
Marcus Lavendell
Muris varajic
Ihsahn (Emperor)
Mark Morton (Lamb of god)
Adam Dutkiewics (Killswitch engage)
Ken Susi (Unearth)
Dimebag Darrel OFC
Obsidian C. (keep of kalessin)
I would have to say this guy, Ozielzinho
My latest inspiration has come from my new friend and our fellow GMCer, Noangels. The guy can play. Check out his youtube video in the GMC, Lessons and Practicing forum under the " A Very General Question About Picking" thread. I've already copped some ideas from this video. I like his bluesy style that goes beyond blues.
Before playing the electric guitar, Andrew York influenced me and he still is my idol. Then I fell in love with Carlos Santana who convinced me to buy an electric guitar. I played his songs for about one year and I was really satisfied when I could play his "fast legato licks" (only 3 notes on 1 string ). Soon after that, I discovered GMC and read a little bit about great players (Ynwgie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani,...). None of them was ok for me but Steve Vai. He is probably my biggest influence. Then I realized that I need more guitarists to analyse because only one is boring (that doen´t mean that Steve Vai is boring, but always the same is a bit unhealthy). So, I played a bit Satch and tried Yngwie Malmsteen and Paul Gilbert and others. Some months ago, I perceived that Muris is incredible. He and Vai are on first place of my influences. I always get new motivation when seeing them play... Thanks for this.
A lot of it was Slash, and Guns N' Roses as a whole, but there are so many, it's hard to count. Muris and Marcus Lavendell are what's mostly keeping me going, though.
Great topic as always.I think I manage to find inspiration in all the successful artists who made the name out of them selfs on there own.People who manage to do it from the bottom, and people who stayed and sayed there own mind always and trough any pressure.
Directly my hero is local(from Serbia,Montenegrao acctualy)he lives and works here in Belgrade, and his name is Vlado Georgiev. That name does not mean anything to you,but to me it does.I met him acctualy ,that was just a boost up of confidence for me.
So many times I brake down, and start not to beleve in my self,I just remeber his example, and I know that any one with a strong will power could make it in evrery line of work.
for me the reason to get better was and still is Alexi Laiho he is amazing
i will see him live next month
Currently it's all the amazing people here on GMC. Especially Emir and Muris, love you guys. *bows down to guitar overlords*
Well, Guthrie Govan has had that impact on me lately
meagan fox....jessica alba...you get the picture!
they inspired me to play better in hopes that one day ill get famous for playing, and then they will be mine
Eric Clapton was the reason i started playing guitar, later on i've been inspired by Jimmy Page, Brian may and Ofcourse Jimi Hendrix the god of guitar!
Awesome video!
The FF arpeggio theme is a classic, I love it!
At the moment, Pizoarro, Marcus Lavendell and Syu
Emir Hot for me, because a few weeks ago he told me a way to improve that has really worked for me, and I feel more motivated than ever to practice at the moment.
