I think it has to do with the low cost of materials to the high price of high end pickups. Like honestly how much does a pickup cost to manufacturer when you buy everything in massive bulk and how much does it sell for. True, strew mac and many other places sell the parts and winding machine rest is I guess experimenting: http://www.stewmac.com/ To be fair though R&D isn't easy, it took me months to fully understand my pickups as I mod.ed them. Each change in placement affected the sound but considering the change better or worse does take time. |

You can buy the parts for a pair o humbuckers for $60 and a spool of wire for about that much. So about $100 and change you can have the parts to make a couple pickups. But like mertay says, the devil is in the details
