If it helps as I remember Bright size life the chord progression is something like GM7 BbM7 D D/C BbM7 G/A...

Thanks, that's a great tune!
I would start with a simple "singing over the track" approach to get a fee for the type of scale you need to use.
Don't get too confused with theory, start with simple licks over a simple passage, maybe 4 measures at a time..
