I just recently started playing in a studio and I had not played with the amps that loud before and I noticed that it took me awhile to get used to picking properly almost like I was worried I would be to loud, is that a normal reaction??

I know exactly what you are talking about. Until I am playing a song along with others at volume, I don't like it loud. I feel way less comfortable and free to experiment LOUD.

The pick attack and finesse feel different too when it's blowing up in your face.

It's probably a matter a your personality wink.gif Some of my friends love to always "on the first plan"while I love to feel like a part of a band And here the final mix already on the stage or in the studio...I don't like to be too loud wink.gif Sometimes it's necessary I it really feels weird biggrin.gif

I like it loud - but loud involves a psychological phenomenon that occurs in a lot of cases - me included, in the beginning - which reduces itself to a few words: 'Holy c...p, I am SO loud, I can't control the guitar, uh oh, what was I playing, uh oh, how did that actually sound?' The volume difference and the open space - I am talking about 100000 Wats, for instance on a huge open air stage, can cause the above described sensation.

The more you do it, the more acquainted with the idea you will become and thus, large volumes will not be a problem anymore smile.gif You know what you have to play and how to do it, all you have to do is adjust to the volume smile.gif

Yeah, this happened to me the first time that we recorded professionally guitars with Cirse. I had already recorded guitars but never as loud. A New Metal musician was our producer and he really knows how to get powerful tones from a Mesa Boggie. At first I wasn't comfortable with the sound, and also it was the first time that I was playing a Gibson Les Paul with 011 strings. Everything was new an I had to get used to it.

Playing with a loud amp really lets you practice your dynamics and feel. So often we are hitting the string as hard as we can, and get really heavy handed with picking. playing a loud amp allows you to be more sensitive with your picking, using your volume knob as a tool etc

Hell man, the Mesa is so dry if you are not used to it biggrin.gif I had the very same impression when I first tried one!
