Sorry guys - had to get this off my chest...
Ive just taken over guitar teaching duties at a local secondary school and had my first lessons today with some pupils of the former teacher...shocked wasnt the word. Some of them had been learning with him for over 4 years and they didnt know what a scale was, never done vibrato and didnt know about sliding, let alone any of the more advanced techniques..
When i quizzed one of my new pupils they said.."Yeah, we only ever did songs with chords..." - for four years???
Whe you think what they could have leart in 4 years...Whilst a good teacher can make you, a bad one can break you! Thank goodness for GMC!
Sorry for the moan...

Holy moly ohmy.gif This really is a dread situation... It is one thing to "fool" with guitar for 4 years in Your bedroom, but going to school for 4 years and learn almost nothing, thats terrible:/

I have had these experiences as well with some students in Boston (at private schools). I was shocked like you were ! It just shows that having a good teacher means a lot to improvement of student.

Do you mean by chords that they only know some open chords? Or barres?

Because 'only playing chords' can also mean they're now damn good rhythm guitarists tongue.gif Of course, if they don't want to be that, they're in the wrong place. Also, the I think they're very naive. In 4 (!) years of playing chords they've never asked themselves : 'what more is out there?' Pretty naive...

It's a matter of so-called teachers wanting to make easy money by playing chords only. As long as the students pay, why should they bother ?

It's pretty much the same when a so-called web developer creates a company website for nothing and then the company starts crying because nothing work, everything is bugged and you can only start everything from scratch.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes not. It's a matter of competencies and needs. smile.gif

Blah...

Man, that's really sad!
I've been in that kind of situation when students come to me after 4 years of learning very basic chords...
Sad!

I've been that student 25 years ago. And I didn't even like the songs we had to play. So I quited. Found GMC 9 month ago and bought a guitar again (even bought a second one tongue.gif) and started from scratch. Now its my biggest hobby and I spend lots of time with GMC. Keep up the good work!! You all made me very happy!
Your new students are very lucky to have you as their new teacher. They now have the opportunity to learn something and have fun biggrin.gif.

The music teacher at my school was like this(From what i have heard from others) He forced his students to only learn stuff he wanted them to learn and dident really cared what they wanted so most of them ended up quiting playing guitar......

Really Really bad story there Conrad hope you can learn them some more stuff

I couldn't agree more!!!

I actually lived it. A bad teacher made me give up electric guitar in only 3 months... mad.gif All my motivation was gone.
7 years later I decided to empty my pocket and go to the best guitar school in the town (one of the best in Brazil). WoW. What a difference. From day one I was just thinking that's what I should have done... 7 years before
I only left the school cause I moved abroad. But that's when I found GMC smile.gif

The good side is that these students are in good hands now wink.gif

I know sometimes is hard, but try to think positive always and just get those kids up and running. There will be always people who are slackers and not do their job right, and those who don't mind going the extra mile if it is worth it.

EDIT: The world is progressing because of the second group ofc wink.gif
