What Do You Think About This Solo?

Okay folks, I'm pretty sure we'll all agree that this solo is pretty darn good but what are your thoughts on Prince being "disrespectful"? Over the years many have said that Prince shouldn't have done it like that.

Personally I'm with this bloke (Miles Hartl) below whose comment was on the Everything Guitar page on Facebook.

"The key to White Album-era Beatles music (and any good music) is joy. And finding ever more creative ways to push beyond the material that you’ve laid out before. Prince brought the joy in droves and blew this solo into the stratosphere. If you doubt it, watch Dahni’s face.

"Let’s stare in stone-faced, ashen, solemn reverence at the teleprompters, regurgitating the tune by rote” always struck me as a mockery of respect. It’s literally like taking the freedom the Fab 4 pioneered and replacing it with something out of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

Everyone else on this stage is going the safe route, playing defensively. We would not be discussing this performance today if the first two minutes were the approach that dictated the ending.

But then one of the three most important musical minds of the 20th century steps up, and delivers a master class for the ages. A master class not about playing defensively, but about playing in a way that’s BUSY BEING BORN.

What’s more Fab than that
?"

I LOVE Prince and I do think he's 1) a very good guitar player, 2) one of the 20th cents pop music masters and 3) a brilliant 'entertainer' (never forget that!).

If you took Prince (the pop star/entertainer) out of the picture ... i.e., had just some session guy playing 'the exact Prince solo' without all the drama and the gestures, etc. I don't think anyone would be talking about it at all. It's a good solo but there's nothing about it that's extraordinary. It's very safe melodically and harmonically. He quotes a lot of the original Clapton solo, does some big bends, big slides and a little quasi shredding - all with the requisite "guitar face" and over emphasized arm moves.

I don't think there's anything irreverent nor genius about any of it. It was a celeb jam honoring a legend. There all kinda like that.

Yeah, the solo itself doesn't matter really, I just wondered about what folks think about it being disrespectful, I'm sure George Harrison would approve cool.gif

Disrespectful? I don't really get that at all. The song is a standard at this point and wads of folks have done their take on it. I do think it matters a bit that its' quite good. if it was just awful, I might see it differently but it's such an amazing example of a guitar player knee deep in musical self expression that it's hard not to respect and enjoy it smile.gif

I enjoyed it so much that I did one myself after seeing his video smile.gif It's a great track to practice soloing over. I'd suggest it as a practice track for you Phil. It's just about perfect for working on creating solos over top of. Its not too fast, not too slow, doesn't do strange key swaps, it's just perfect smile.gif

I certainly don't find ANYTHING about it disrespectful, and I've never heard anyone even remark that. It's fucking 'rock' music ... it's supposed to be disrespectful. *The "safety" of so much music today is what pisses me off.

Sure! Here it is. It's a very spiff backing that is crazy fun to solo over. Give it a go! Share your vid if you get the chance!

Thanks. That was my plan.

I enjoyed jamming on this one last night, but I didn't record it as I was in a discord group call and had people talking in the background. I'll try to get a take on bother.

Here's a take on the Beatles' backing. I did a take before this one, but for some reason the audio didn't record, so let's call that a warm up and this the real take smile.gif

I have read through this a whole bunch of times and I still don't get it.

Would this be perceived as disrespectful because Prince does not stick to the original version? Is that the point?

If they wanted something close to the original version I guess the could just have brought in a bunch of studio musicians?

I thought the whole idea of big names doing covers was for them to add their own touch to the tune.

P.S. Awesome takes by Cael and Todd 😎

I can't find the post that this was about now but I assume some were saying he was disrespectful taking over the stage, that he upstaged a dead man, that he was showing off in the name of a dead man which are the kind of comments I have seen in the past on FB about this solo.

Crazy how some folks are.

If they wanted that, they probably would have got Eric Clapton to do it. He's the guy that actually played the solo on that tune (with George's red LP and Paul's Bassman amp). When you hire Prince, you get what you get.

And what you get is usually pretty good. I'm embarrassed to say that I never even knew Prince was such a great player until a few years ago, it was Rob Balducci who told me that Prince is/was his favourite guitar player, I was surprised considering Rob's style and links with Vai and Satch, he said you probably wouldn't pick up on how good he was from his albums but that you had to see him live to get why he's appreciated as a guitarist.

This whole thread has actually been sort of a catalyst in me ending up in a "live playing in real life" situation.

I haven't been too outspoken about it, but I thought it would be fun to mention now.

One of the guys I play football with has invited the team (plus wife/husbands/girlfriends/partners) to an evening of eating and drinking and just socialising a bit. This will be held at his workplace. He plays in a band and they have a small "stage" in the corner of the room there, where they will play. He asked if I wanted to play a solo with them, since he had heard me play - and one of the videos he had heard was my jam above on this track. He actually thought I knew the song well, but I had never really played on it before this video.

Anyway, long story short, I will be performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" with them that night. It's on the 13th of April smile.gif
