GMC Forum _ CHILL OUT _ What Do You Do To Warm Up ?

Posted by: Ben Higgins Oct 19 2012, 01:11 PM

I mean it literally.. there's nothing worse than having freezing cold hands when you want to play guitar. So, what do you do to get some heat back into your body ? Do you go and run around the house ? Jog on the spot ? Press ups ? I usually just put on an extra shirt and go and make a cup of tea smile.gif

Yeah, I will put some extra clothes on and sometimes drink coffee. But if only my hands are cold, I run warm-hot water over them. I don't do it too long, however, because we know what that could mean for the calluses.

I use warm water and I cirlce my arms fast .... if that all fails I stick my hands under my armpits....

but I really hate it when my hands get cold

What annoys me are times when you have warm hands when you start playing but then they get colder and colder even though you're playing !?! What's that about ? tongue.gif

I start off with a cup of coffee... then I have a second cup and sip it in between some warm up licks and noodling. By then, I'm usually warmed up enough to get into what I want to work on for the day. smile.gif

I do some stretches (the ones that John Petrucci shows in his Rock Discipline video), wash my hands with hot water, drink some tea or mate and start slowly with some warming up exercises like this ones:

yah - I hate practicing in a cold room - I can warm up my hands, but after a short while, the backs of my hands and fingers get cold again. I'm thinking maybe I'll try cutting some gloves in half (take the palm side off), then gluing the top side to my hand this winter biggrin.gif or maybe some mittens - that would be funny fo sho!

haha - this thread made me go surfing

Man, I hate it when the weather starts turning cold for that reason. My hands freeze in the winter time. The more I play, the colder they get. I notice it mostly after I take a break from playing. The fingers feel like ice.

That reminds me, I have to get out the space heater and start cranking it up. I the winter time, I put an electric radiator in my room and turn it on low and leave it on most of the day (while I'm home). That way the room stays nice and warm and my guitars and desk don't feel like a cold piece of steel when I pick them up. (Well, yeah, I don't ever pick up the desk, but you know what I mean. biggrin.gif ) It makes playing in the winter time quite comfortable. I get carried away with it sometimes and wear shorts and a t-shirt in the practice room and then put a sweatshirt on when I leave the room. My wife thinks I'm crazy. biggrin.gif Our electric bill goes up about twenty bucks too. It's worth it though.

Stretches and hand massage, along with a hot cup of something. I always stay dressed more during the winter, but usually when I'm at home I crank up the heat and I can stay in my T-shirt.

I had my fair share of cold on stage... There was this one time back in 2007, when, around December 21st I have performed alongside my future Aria bandmates in a guitar festival where I played Steve Vai's Tender Surrender and a great tune by Van Halen called 'Baluchitherium'

I don't even want to think about how we all felt at -4 degrees Celsius on that stage laugh.gif

Man...there's this silly period, starting with late September until the end of November when my dad doesn't want to turn on the heat inside the house and I go crazy because of that. My house has pretty high ceilings and thick walls, so it keeps cool if it's not heated up and usually in this period I'm talking about, I go freezing about sad.gif

Oh.. that sucks ! You have to remind him that your livelihood is in the health of your hands. Cold hands = bad circulation = injury = arthritis = de motivation = no guitar playing = no life = all your Dad's fault ! tongue.gif

I'm sure he'll be pleased you reminded him biggrin.gif

I just had a talk with him and he said - I don't feel cold... laugh.gif
