Ok so I want to start recording myself. Ive looked through the forums here and havent found any similar topics on this (contrary to what I thought)

Where do I start as far as purchasing hardware and software?

- does hardware exist such that i can plug directly into my computer?
- is this hardware expensive?

-how much does a good mic cost?
is it common practice to record to a computer through a mic?

and if the above hardware does tend to be expensive. (I'm a college student so I don't have a lot of money saved up) What are some cheaper alternatives as far as hardware.

I've read a little bit about the Reaper program, and it seems like thats a good choice for someone like me, but i'm clueless as far as everything else.

Thanks in advance,

Chris
