Hi guys,

I am thinking on buying a new bridge pickup for my stratocaster on christmas. My question is how can you shop for a pickup ? You can't try them in your guitar and see wich one you like. I have the impression that you have to guest before buying a pickup.

I love the neck and the middle pickup on my strat. I think that I should put a new pickup in the bridge to get better distorsion on rock song. Also the bridge pickup is really noisy with to much gain. I am not looking for a metal pickup, I am only looking for a kind of humbucker that would allow me to play rock and hard rock stuff. I know a lot of GMCer have change the pickups in there strat.

I have browse on the site of Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio but it is not easy to get a good overall impression for each pickup.

Also I would like to specify that there is no Guitar Center here.... So it is impossible to go in a store and to find every possible pickups. I am probaly going to buy it online so any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks guys !!!

I am guessing you have a coil in the bridge...

Would you consider a coil sized humbucker for the bridge to get some rock tones (and less noise) or does it have to be a singlecoil?

I have some "stacked" single coils on my Warmoth from Seymour Duncan that does a great job, but a real humbucker will be even greater.... (if You wants a high gain sound) The stacked mics can be splitted, so that they works as single coils in postion 2/4 to get the funky "quack" sound... On my regular strat I use Texas Specials, but there was copies of the 69' mics from Custom Shop on it from the very beginning, and they also sounds very good, not so high output but a very nice clean sound....

I have browsea bit more and I taught that the DiMarzio DP188 Pro Track Pickup was very interesting. It looks pretty versatile and it looks that it can handle pretty Hard/Rock gain.

I'll keep on looking.

Yes, well I guess I am in a similar situation as you do. You probably have already seen my post^^

I was wondering whether it was more interesting to have a real double-coil humbucker or a P90 (which has the shape of a humbucker but that in reality is a single coil if I'm not wrong). What is the main difference in terms of sound?

yes they do, they ARE the humbuckers. The have two singlecoils stacked together and reversed polarity on each for hum canceling.
They will never sound the same as the full sized humbuckers tho, but they will be as close as you can get.

I suggest checking out the cavity of your Strat, possibly it has cavities for full sized hums.

Crazy, I installed the Pro Track and I love it. It's very warm and middy, but distorts well. Good for riffs and lead but won't roar as much as a full-sized humbucker.

i love the dimarzio chopper for the bridge on strats, it is a humbucker in a single coil skin, but still, sounds thinner and got more attack -i think- than a full size humbucker, can't go wrong with this pickup smile.gif

Hey Crazy, I didn't get a chance to read all the way through this thread, but what sound are you trying to go for? If you're trying to emulate David Gilmour tone, then you should check out gilmourish.com

More specifically, here's the link to a page where he talks about different pickups for different Gilmour era's. http://www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=35.

You have to scroll down a good ways but just do a word find for 'pickups' and you'll get to the good stuff.

Hope this helps some. Good luck!

I already knew this site Earman but thanks for sharing.

I am not looking for a Gilmour sound. I am looking for a pickup that is going to allow me to handle more distorsion and more «power». I don't really like the bridge pickup on the strat, I really feel that he is missing something.

And thanks for the tips Adrian... I am going to look a the Dimarzio Chopper also.

The big question is : How can I decide wich pickup to buy ??? I can't try them on my guitar....

That's the worst and the most fun part: discovering your sound by trial and error!

You have some suggestions, now try to find soundclips on the internet of those pickups in similiar guitars. Narrow it down to 2 or 3 pickups that might suit you ant then buy one of them. Chances are high that you will be satisfied, if not you can always return the pickup to the shop while being richer in experience...
