I've been working a lot on my picking technique recently, because I would like to play surf songs. Many of these songs require pretty vicious tremolo picking. The master of course, is Dick Dale.

So I've been watching a lot videos of live surf music, and came across Laramie Dean. He's got pretty intense picking, but his hand barely moves!

Yes, his right hand movement is really economic and effective. He does the smaller movement possible while picking so as soon as he cross the string with the pick he gets back in order to get that tremolo sound/effect. His fingers are totally fixed, the movement starts from his wrist but it's natural and relaxed.

Practice this only with open strings or letting your left hand fixed pressing the same note to put all your focus on your right hand work.
