Hello everyone! My first post here at GMC. I have been subscribing for a few weeks now but this is my first time on the forum so hello! My question is, where can i learn some more scales? I have been practicing the two in the beginners videos everyday and feel ready to move onto some more! smile.gif

also, should i be picking up,down,up,down? or just down down down??

I am glad you fell ready to move on! Why not have a look at the pentatonic lesson serie - the next ste could be to learn som more pentatonic boxes.

Ionian
Pentatonic
Major
Minor etc ??

The pentatonic scale has got 5 notes.
for example: Em penta has the notes: E,G,A,B,D.
It starts over after the 5 notes.

Norven, great post but you could include how many whole and half-steps there are in each scale.

I'm sorry if they are there but I didn't see them just now. Now, personally I sort of know it and I have it written down somewhere around here but just too make your post from 4.6 to a full 5 wink.gif

Damn...im sure this post is really helpfull only if i actually understand it..im really new to the theory part of the guitar and im bad at basics. I know only the Am pentatonic and the CM scale can someone please explain me the difference using those as the example..would really help and what does half step up and down mean?Is it similar to tuning the guitar up and down?

Okey sooo, it was a long time since I actually studied theory so my knowledge is so-so and I'm at my work place trying to look busy biggrin.gif

So Im gonna start at the very bottom of guitar theory. On our beloved guitar there is a number of notes. 12 to be exact. All 12 notes together represents an octave, A guitar has between 20 - 24 frets usually. Each fret respresents a note. So on the 12 first frets on each and any string are the first octave on the guitar with all the notes. All notes are on all strings.

The notes are: A A# B C C# D D# E F F# G G#

Or well, actually some of them arent # but are b instead. This is just raising and lowering a note. So, for example Ab would be the same as G# and so forth.

Using this knowledge we can see where every note on our fretboard. For example we will start with the E string:

E - F - F# - G - G# - A - A# - B - C - C# - D - D# - E

Or you can think of this as: Fret 0, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and 12.

A half-step is one of those nice thingies I tried to explain earlier (# and cool.gif and a hole-step is "two steps" in my nice note line-up.

So, if we were to take a half-step from A we would get A#. If we would go a hole-step from A we would get B.

This means that with certain forumlas we can get different scales. So if you learn the formula for any scale you can take your pen and paper and write down all notes and then take out which ones that are in your scale and based from that you get a diagram of notes to play that are in your scale.

So by using our new-found knowledge we use Norvens post where he gave us the formula for a major scale and we can use C major as example:

Major formula: 1 (hole) 2 (hole) 3 (half) 4 (hole) 5 (hole) 6 (hole) 7 (half) 8

We start on C of course so we get: C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C

We can doublecheck that we calculated it right by having the 8th being the same as the 1st.

Hope this cleared something up. If not then Im sorry for takin your time. Now there could be some misstakes in here because it was a long time ago since last I actually studied some theory.
