What is your setup? Are you trying to record the ouptut of an amp? Or record direct? Are you using an audio interface with usb or just sticking the audio cable in the little mic input on your built in sound card? Just let us know smile.gif

Also which di box are you thinking of getting? One with USB? If you don't have a usb audio interface, it's a good idea to get one probably before the DI box to be honest. Unless the DI has usb. You mentioned female xlr? This is what is making me think you want to grab the output of an amp. smile.gif

Hi,

I want to record directly.I will be using the Behringer Ultra DI 20 DI Box.I want to connect the output channel directly to my laptop soundcard.I wont be using amps.Only the guitars will be connected to DI input channel. What procedure should I follow and what kind of cables are needed?

You could skip the DI BOX entirely to honest. Using it will force you to convert from XLR all the way down to mini jack and won't gain you much.

You can just get a small adapter for your guitar cable. It's called

QUARTER INCH TO 1/8th INCH,MONO

These cost about $5. UNless there is something you need from the DI box?

Here is a link to an example of the adapter.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion. But the DI box converts the instrument level signal to mic level signal. And that wont cause any harm to the sound card compared to using the adapter.

This sounds like the best and safest way to go with this connection.
Check out this video (2:09 mark shows what kind of cables you need): https://youtu.be/18Kh2LB7K_E?t=2m9s

You'll be going from guitar to DI unit using a standard guitar cable.
DI output is XLR, so you'll need a female XLR to small jack (which fits the laptop mic input). These kind of cables can be custom made.

Please let me know if you need any further help with getting this setup.

Well said smile.gif If you want to use the DI box you'll need to convert XLR to 1/8th inch jack to go in to your computer. You can probably pick up something like that at a local music store but you may have to order online or even have it custom made. What your trying to do is sorta off the beaten path.

You can buy a USB to Guitar jack cable for about $35 and skip the DI box and skip all the custom cable/adapters and all that extra stuff. Here is just the thing for $14.

But if you decide to have cables built or if you find adapters for cheap, let us know smile.gif

You're welcome, feel free to post whenever you need any help.
I do agree with Todd on this one, it is generally a better solution to get a cheap usb audio interface which supports guitar connection than to use the internal sound card of your laptop. Both should work though wink.gif
