Hey Guys I have a question. I was in a guitar store the other day and saw a Gibson LP that said it was Bumble Bee equipped. The sales guy was busy so I didn't get to ask him what that was so I thought I'd ask here. Exactly what is a Bumble Bee?

They are a capacitor, not sure what it would do but thats what they look like.

Its a type of capacitor that was used back in the 50's. Some vintage fanatics think that this type of capacitor provides superior tone. I think thats hogwash. The most important thing about a capacitor is its value - i.e. how many micro farads it is - not what it is made from. But this doesn't stop Gibson from taking advantage of peoples naivete and selling these 50 cent parts for ONE-HUNDRED AND TWELVE dollars wacko.gif

Thanks for the reply guys! It would make sense to have a capacitor like that on the guitar I saw since it was a re-issue of a '56 Goldtop. But I agree that Gibson prices are crazy.

Yeah, they are old caps - Bumblebees:

Let you adjust the tone a lot more, however I would call them dated and overpriced.

Your got the tone pots themselves:
250K pot is warmer and smooth sounding
500K pot is brighter and fuller sounding

Then caps which go onto the back of them, which adjust the tone even more. The problem is most normally fuzz out and lose their quality when turned down, so most just turn them up to 8-10 and never change it.

If you wanted something adjustable, but more modern, get Stellartone Tonestyler Tone Pots:

Yeah I know, I actually went back to the store and sat and played that LP for about 20-30 minutes. It was a Gibson custom 1956 goldtop, (beautiful guitar guitar by the way) and supposed to be an exact replica of the ones they put out in the 50's. Personally I didn't really think it sounded any different tone wise from my custom, which is a 1994 re-issue. Could just be me though. smile.gif
