GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Blues Rock Collab

Posted by: Cosmin Lupu Jul 21 2014, 08:16 AM

Do you like blues? Do you like rock?
Let's do both!

Blues Rock Collab.
What's this all about? Well, as you may have guessed, combining blues and rock elements over three different types of backing tracks - the verse, over which you can easily deploy the minor pentatonic scale or even the Dorian mode and the chorus where the more daring GMC'ers can use the chorus backing track where aside from the E natural minor scale, in the very end they can throw in some notes borrowed from the Phrygian mode, which requires a little bit more experience in respect to choosing the notes which you'll want to use.

Working and participating in collabs will give you the type of input you cannot achieve when practicing on your own - so even if you feel shy about this, you should give it a serious try. You will improve in unpredictable ways for certain!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BACKING TRACKS:

Verse:  Verse_Backing_Track.mp3 ( 1.91MB ) : 376

Chorus:  Chorus_Backing_Track.mp3 ( 658.62K ) : 400

Verse+Chorus:  Full_Backing_Track.mp3 ( 3.46MB ) : 403

Tempo: 140 BPM

Key: E minor

This collab is based on the upcoming lesson by instructor Guido Bungenstock.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's everything you need to know about how to enter this collaboration:

1. Download the backing track and open it in your recording software
2. Record your part in the recording software and with your video cam (if you have the possibility to record video).
You can record anything - a short fill part, rhythm based ideas, or a full lead part (solo).
3. Render one track containing your guitar recording only - 16 bit wave file 44,1 kHz
4. Render one track containing both solo and backing track in an .mp3 format
5. Send us your video (preferably in .mp4 format)

As always, you can send us the last 3 files mentioned, using a dropbox link, or any other file transfer service you are used to, by posting them in this thread or attaching them to a private message.

If you can't submit a video, you can send us only the audio files and some pictures of you - it will work out great as well!
The more pictures you send, the better will it be for editing in the final video!

When attaching/sending the collab files, please include the source file of the video as well.

Very important: IT DOESN'T MATTER IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER/ ADVANCED/ PRO/ GOD - all styles, approaches and all levels are welcome and you can even play just a short fill if you feel like it!

Bringing your contribution to this track and tribute to the GMC community is what really matters!

Collab tips:

As in the previous collabs, we want this one to stand out as much as possible, because this will give your playing and progress maximum exposure. So here's what we suggest:

Making short but polished and detailed lines will always give you better results! If you focus on a short part of the backing track, then you will most likely amaze yourself and others! No explicit need to play over the full backing track length, so just pick up any amount of bars you feel most comfortable playing over, as it's always better to come up with something short but catchy or memorable!

Check out these lessons for inspiration:

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Pop-Rock-Solo-Beginner/ - the licks in this lesson, boosted to a higher tempo and tweaked with, could fit the bill over the chorus section!

http://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/dorian_phrasing_beginner/ - a little inspiration for what you can do if you decide to use the Dorian, in order to spice up the minor pentatonic scale, over the verse part.

Blues means the saying a lot with little notes, so, no worries about too many technical licks - just put your soul out there and we'll be glad to offer the necessary support along the way wink.gif

Hey man! Welcome onboard!

I like the fact that you have played based around a theme and you have nice direction, phrasing and clean playing!

The only thing that I feel like I'd like to hear more would be the vibrato - but that's a personal matter wink.gif Keep rocking!!

The great Roberts is back!!! biggrin.gif

Thanks for your take man! Your phrasing is very tasty and groovy, it's a very strong solo. There are some interpretation details that could take this one to another level that are mostly based on expression techniques. I think that your vibrato could be stronger, that your bends are sometimes a bit out of pitch and that you could give this one more dynamics and groove with your right hand. I think that maybe this take has been mostly an improvisation so that's the reason why you could put your focus on these details but have it in mind for the next time or maybe for a new take of this same solo.

I'm curious, what's about you nowadays? Are your working on some guitar routines? It's been a while since we last talked!

I'm not having much time to practice these days, no new routines here.... as evidenced by my same flawed playing with the out of pitch bends and weak vibrato.... but I had to try out the blues rock collab, one of my favorites. Most time lately is spent looking for work and taking care of 3 busy kids. I guess my rock star dream will have to be put on hold in the meantime... wink.gif

mmm I hope to see you jamming as in the old days soon! I have been missing you at the chat room sharing amazing backing tracks and Satch style phrases. Let me say that maintaining your bending and vibrato technique could be possible with just 15 minutes of practice every day.
Do you remember that old video with Joe Satriani tips that included some bending, vibrato and left hand exercises? If not, let me know! I will send it to you inbox in a moment... wink.gif

It looks very metaaaalll biggrin.gif Not my type of axe, as it looks pretty uncofmy - how do you cope with playing it? Do you need to find a certain position to hold it? Or? I remember my first electric - A Jackson Randy Rhoads copy, which was pretty uncomfy to use when sitting if you wanted to play sidesaddle...

Hey bro! That's exactly what I wanted to point out - you have very nice ideas, but the timing is a bit faulty wink.gif You need to work with the drum track a bit more smile.gif I am looking forward to hearing the next try with more groove, because the ideas are great!

That's a killer composition! You have the most difficult part mate, now it's time to focus on the easy part: practice to polish it. You have to focus on timing, the phrases are excellent! Use a metronome over the backing, use your foot to count while you play, close your eyes while you practice, try to sing the solo over the backing focusing on timing. Experiment with this tips in order to adjust the timing and your solo will be top level.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 4 2014, 06:55 AM

Oddly enough it sits perfectly! smile.gif It's like a V in the back so I sit with it in classical position and it rests at the perfect angle so the neck is just right. It actually sits better than my other guitars. It's a bit wonky to play when standing just because it tends to bump in to things!

Hi Rhida! Nice to find your take here! I just give you some comments and ideas at Gab's Army before listening to this take. I can notice that there are some cool ideas happening here, but there are many things that could be polished just with some more practice. Let's divide the solo in different parts:

00:00 to 00:15: Here you use a melody played with octaves and your tremolo bar to give it an aggressive vibrato. Be careful with timing when you play the melodies, and try to make the vibrato (with the bar) with a groove more connected with the rhythm of the track. This will make it fit better and less "nervous".

00:17- 00:44 : Here appear the bending problems. You don't reach the correct pitches most of the times and that makes your solo sound out of scale. I gave you an extra exercise at gab's army so please check it out. A good experiment would be to record the melodies and phrasing that you are trying to play but without bending technique. Instead of playing bends, play the target notes to memorize the pitches and notes that you are trying to play for this solo. Then you can practice the solo using bending but playing over your own solo, to compare the pitches while you play and be sure that you are playing them right.

00:44 - end: That last lick is a bit over the fast limits of your current playing so why would you add it now? What about creating a slower variations that is closer to your current skills and save this one for a diary practice that let you master it in some time? You can create and idea that has less notes but that has the same essence or feeling. Try it and show me the examples that you get!

Ok mate, I hope that this feedback help you! The idea is not to discourage you to join this one, we can use many parts of this take to create the final mix, but as the collaborations are specially designed to work on your phrasing, composing and technique, we think that some honest and detailed feedback is the way to go.

Let me know if you have any question about these things.

Keep on the hard work! wink.gif

Hey there Rhida!

I'm rowing in the same boat as Gabi here smile.gif You can polish this take in order to have it ready for the collab before the deadline, so please take Gabi's suggestions into consideration and I will once again underline that honest feedback is pretty much that one thing that no matter how harsh would sound at times, is the only one that can help you progress.

I will recommend a few lessons here that will help your phrasing and pitch control when bending, so that you may have a few extra arrows in your quiver for this collab:

Killer lesson by Guido! He shares some really nice phrasing that goes very connected with the organ arrangements. I'm sure that those who weren't inspired will get good idea from this lesson. Thanks for sharing Bogdan.

Many Thx, Gabriel!!
This was my intention here: a simple but effective phrasing and really close to the organ chords. :-)

Great takes DG and bleez! Thank you for being so early on the collab and nice lines from you both!

DG - your chorus idea sounds very smart and it already promises a stellar take - what sort of a guitar is that? A Caparison maybe? biggrin.gif

bleez - good flow here mate! A nice addition to your already well known tone and a great set of catchy licks!

Alright gentlemen! 6 more days - who's in?

Excellent take! Smooth and tasteful soloing - it sounds like you wrote it, very good phrasing and resolutions.

You too DeGroot - I'm just reading the last page of this thread so that's all I've seen, but excellent on both you guys.

thanks very much Cosmin & Spock, much appreciated smile.gif
I wish I could knock out a few of those lines that Joe played. That was some classy stuff, DG cool.gif

Posted by: DeGroot Aug 16 2014, 01:50 PM

Thanks guys. smile.gif Killer take bleez! Not easy to come up with something over the whole track. Todd's take is splendid too!

Unfortunetly I will only be contributing this small bit. I only had a small window too squeeze this in.

Cosmin- I'll PM the files in a moment.

The guitar I'm playing is a Hamer Californian. Discontinued around '96. I bought this axe off of Todd a couple years back… it is my 80's shred dream guitar with 27 frets. smile.gif I think Caparison had a very similar design some years later.

Fantastic take mate! It's short but it's pure quality. I'm sure that Guido would add this melody to his track. As I said previously, we are open to receive short takes for these collabs. It's really helps to make the final mix amazing. Thank for your take friend. biggrin.gif

Thanks for clearing things up, DG! I was very sure it was a Caparison - anyway, somehow I began associating that axe with Mattias Eklundh biggrin.gif

Also got the files for which I thank you wink.gif Anybody else got some files for the collab? If so, post them here or send me a PM smile.gif

That's awesome. Thanks for the extended deadline. My soundcard has died on me just a few days after I got it, and the replacement died after 5 minutes...

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 23 2014, 12:26 AM

EGAD!! Sounds like your computer is WRECKING your sound cards?
If you have a power imbalance in your motherboard, your usb ports can get too much juice. Also, if the small metal housing of the port is warped/bent, it can cause a short.

Before you bake your third sound card, I'd try isolate the issue. is this happening on one computer, eg. laptop? if so, use another computer when you get another sound interface.

As Todd mentioned, it's most likely an issue that comes from elsewhere. Is the soundcard completely toasted? I find it hard to believe that these things are so easy to destroy..

The soundcard(s) isn't completely toasted. Just the inputs and outputs that has stopped working. Same as on the other card. I suddenly got like eternal delay on the microphone and the input lit up and wouldn't go off, then I unplugged the mic XLR and the input was still lit up. I then restarted my computer and then none of the inputs or outputs would work.

I'm just doing this on my laptop with default BIOS settings, nothing out of the ordinary going on. Everything else works fine from the USB hub.

I didn't throw money after a new one, just got it traded for a second Scarlett 2i2. Which then did the same of course. I'm gonna take it to the store again and ask what the hell is going on. Gonna bring my laptop and possibly get the soundcard traded for another brand.

Posted by: Todd Simpson Aug 23 2014, 08:52 AM

OK, so it's the laptop. Also, NEW INFO your using a HUB. It could be the hub!!!!!!!!! next time you get a sound card,

DON"T PLUG IT IN TO THE HUB!!!!!

Instead, plug it directly in to the motherboard but make sure the power on the laptop is OFF!!!!! I know USB is plug and play and "Hot Swap" but you are having issues so you can't be too careful smile.gif

Try a soundcard AT THE STORE and see if it works smile.gif If it does, DON"T PLUG IT IN TO THAT HUB~!!!

See what the guys say, although I tend to think Todd has a point here with the USB, I wen through the same thing myself with some devices and it was the port. When I changed the port - presto - it worked smile.gif See what the guys at the store have to say, first thing wink.gif
