Ok here's my deal I was working on a collab and in attempts to work a section to be faster I spent hours going at it. I started to get sharp little pains in my left forearm on the underside. So I took it easy and took longer breaks so as not to exert it. However I'm at the point that it feels like its popping and sharp pain...obviously i need to completely stop now and try some very slow and simple things when starting back up in a day or so..I am curious since this has never happened before ..is any of you had had similar problems and if so what did you do to recover or make the situation better so it didnt happen again? It feels like it may be a tendon issue.

I put some cabbage on my hand - seriously. It helped a lot.

Best advice is to go to doctor ! You will get some exercises and light stretching every day and things will be back to normal.

What? Does cabbage have some healing abilities that I am not aware of?

Isn't this pain from your thumb muscles?... maybe try to hold your hand in another way over the fretboard, probably you're pushing your neck to hard.

Try to wear some tourniquet on your wrist and see if it helps.

And... beware, you can get an instant injury which will exclude you from playing for a long period.

I am going to add another thing besides the cabbage idea.

While you relax and try to recover, it seems that you just over taxed the tendon. Let me try and explain a simple anatomy thing. Your tendons slide inside of a small tube that is lubricated, if you over exert them the tubes become inflammed and swell up, squeezing the tendons and if you keep pushing the tendons can create micro tears in the tube like tissue eventually causing small nodules of scar tissue.

That is usually what is happening when you can hear and feel your tendons popping constantly.

So my advice is take it very easy for a few days maybe not playing for a day or so. In the interim make sure you drink plenty of water so your body is hydrated enough to replace the lubrication fluids in those little tubes and allow the inflammation to go down.

Daniel

That same thing happened to me a few years ago.
Were you playing repetitive things over an over?

That's what I was doing. I felt sharp pain in my forearm and the next day my left hand was completely paralyzed. I went to see the doctor who gave me cortizone shots. That helped a lot.
If the pain continues go see a specialist!

Also while practicing your instrument, make sure to take many breaks and drink a lot of water. It will help your muscles.

When that happends you have to stop totally for at least two days so your arm forgets about the motions that make appear the pain.
I usually have a "bag" that has water in it and I always keep it in the freezer so when that happends I apply it to the affected zone until all goes numb.
The tips to not happend all that again is to warm up every time and before and after make stretching exercises. I recommend the Esther Sadra Rico book, you can get very cool exercises from there. And be sure not to exceed your practice time when you're not used to.

No matter what you do man, be sure to take some time off, like 5 days and see if the pain stops. If it does, start slowly with playing, and if the pain appears again, go see a doctor. Hope you get better soon mate.

Seems like a tendon issue as suggested ..(yes I was doing the intro to cliffs of dover over and over for a few hours at a time) so this may totally be the culprit..i have refrained from playng anything...so as not to damage it worse. I'll probably do some slow and simple scale work tommorow and see what happens ..if the pain returns i'll call the doc to make an appointment. I totally appreciate all of your help on this subject. I do however want to know if I should put cabbage on the hand or forearm since the pain was in the forearm not the hand...My fiance said she heard about this home remedy too but couldnt recall what it was about in detail.

I also experience pain when I play. Mine is due to frustration brought about by sloppy playing, marginal gear, limited lick vocabulary, and uninspiring tone. I want my mommy.

Take a rest and go to a doctor if possible.
Long sessions as you mentioned can bring pain to differents parts of your body: not only your hands, but also arms, elbows, shoulders, neck and back.
I know it take some time and when we start practicing we are eager to go for guitar directly, but you should stretch all of those before playing. wink.gif Specially if for a long session.

Go to a doctor if you can affor one. In the upper side of the forearm exist the tendons that allows you close the fist, don´t press the strings so hard, lossen your wrist, this will unlock your fingers and avoid pain. I forgot to mention something in the chatroom, when I saw your vid again, the inclination of the guitar is to much, and your right hand seems more trying to avoid the guitar to fall than anchoring the right hand. Be careful.
