I saw that the UK plans to hit zero carbon by 2050. It's a bold plan to be sure. It is in keeping with the NO MAR CARS THAT RUN PETROL law that kicks in 2030 in the land of tea and crumpets. Also a bold move. Going to be tricky though but it's on track.

what sorta shocked me was seeing that oil company CHEVRON says that they will be carbon neutral by 2050? CHEVRON Oil? Their main product is, OIL which is not a carbon neutral product. Mining oil is not carbon neutral either. how does a company that only sells carbon emitting products plan to go to zero carbin emissions? Hmm..

Evidently CHEVRON says it is moving away from it's primary product. OIL. And pivoting towards renewables. Seems a bit of a stretch that an oil company is going to stop selling oil, but we shall see smile.gif

I do hope chevron pivots to carbon neutral energy as it may save them as a company.

Veering towards politics again, Todd? What's this topic have to do with the Lydian Dominant scale in a blues context? wink.gif Anyway, if you look at the bigger picture. Chevron is in the ENERGY buisiness so it makes perfect sense to move in other directions.
I fail to see the reasoning for this kind of topic here.

Just wanted to share CHEVRON going carbon neutral. I could not believe it when I saw it. This is the chill out section after all
Not political as I'm not advocating just sharing. It does look like the UK is enshrining progress .

Yeah ok, if you say so. I think you are on the thin line and pushing the envelope.. But be realistic. Carbon neutral doesn't truly exist and I doubt it will exist in 2050. The materials and manufacturing of so called renewable or green energy products such as solar and windfarms etc are dependant on petroleum products. Without them, they don't exist.

I have to agree it seems a synthetic benchmark. I really would like to see see CHEVRON try to turn itself carbon neutral or even close to that as they have billions of dollars invested in carbon based fuel. If they pivot to renewable, how will they amortize the billions of dollars of infrastructure focused on oil? I do look forward to seeing how they try to pull this off. It was shocking to me which is why I shared it. It's like phillip morris saying that they are going to stop selling cigarettes and focus only on selling healing crystals.

I'm not surprised in the least. All of the major players in the oil buisiness have made investments in renewable energy. Shell oil announced the exact same goal as Chevron. BP, Exxon and the rest have all made moves in that direction because as I said before. Beyond being in the oil buisiness, they are in the ENERGY buisiness, so it's only logical to move in that direction. But don't count on anyone being truely carbon neutral by 2050. The list of petroleum based products is long and won't be replaced anytime soon.

I think you are spot on. They do have to start to pivot. THey really have no choice. One of the big motivators is something called the EURO 7 set of standards that are coming up. As a result, several big car companies have said that they will no long continue to develop new gas engines. It's part of the reason that Bugatti is know part of the RIMAC group (a small eastern euro startup company) who make EV drive trains and parts that are found in most every performance EV out there. Here is a video on euro 7.

in light of this it makes the UK legislation about getting rid of new gas cars make more sense. But europe isn't really the problem in terms of emissions it's really china. The market shift to EV will catch hold there as well as so many builders will be making EV and one BIG factor is that it's very hard to get a license plate for a gas car in china. It takes months/years of waiting. However, it's easy and quick to get a license plate for a EV car in china. The govt is very stiff on giving out license plates and they are using it to shift buyers towards EV cars. I've spoken with several of my cambly students from China about this lately.

One big shift in China is that the govt won't allow provinces to put a limit on the number of EV license plates. They currently have limits/quotas on license plates for gas powered cars. Getting a license plate can cost $50,000 USD. Last year there were THREE MILLION PEOPLE ON THE WAITING LIST FOR A LICENSE PLATE IN BEIJING. ouch. They only gave out 60k license plates for EVs. But now that is gonna change. So it will create a bottleneck of people trying to buy an EV just so they can actually get a license plate. Its also lottery based. so even if one has the money, its' still a lottery. This won't be the case anymore on EVs.

You don't really expect China to make giant strides in moving away from fossil fuels, do you? Because they won't. But they will make lots of money off the movement in the mining of rare earth minerals and they won't use EV's or clean mining techniques to do it. Green energy isn't really green at all.
Anyway, In the 28 years till 2050, we may come to the realization that man's use of fossil fuels effect on climate has been greatly overestimated for whatever reasons since there is a strong and growing body of evidence that supports that there are other factors involved that effect climate which are beyond our control and influence. After all, the notion that carbon is a major driver of a changing climate has always only been a theory and not a fact.

For me it's not just about climate change. It would seem a natural development to go towards more sustainable energy sources, whatever they may be - I know a newer energy source might require some capacity of the old to still be in use. But to move towards a "better" and more efficient way in regards to resources can't be a bad thing, in my opinion. At least having the discussion and talk about "moving forward" is not a bad thing, regardless if that is making cars run 500 miles per gallon, going electrical etc. I'd think solar energy is less finite than say fossil fuel. But I'm a bit out of the loop on these things.

I remember a documentary about energy from the waves in Japan some 10-15 years back, which was also interesting.

I was talking about the rapid rise in sales of EV due to the govt removing the limit on license plates. We know this is happening just looking at EV sales in China. As for the rest of it, only time will tell. who knows, we may find out carbon isn't the problem as you mention, or we may find out we have underestimated it badly and its' all our fault Only time will tell. As neither of us are scientists, all we can do is read conflicting reports and speculate.

Well said!! I have to agree. In the end it's just a practical decision. We know fossil fuels will eventually run out so the sooner we can transition to something else, the better of we will be smile.gif

I saw this video and it seemed very relevant. Why don't we accept science anymore? Turns out that social media algorithms are amping up conspiracy content and and as a result, people get pushed further and further away from actual science and towards partisan politics of one side or another. It's a very negative outcome of social media but has no direct solution.

Simple. Because ever increasingly, science is infected by politics and special interest money. So much in some cases that science actually becomes politics and then can't be trusted to actually and truely follow the scientific method.
Many times alleged conspiracy ends up being true.

It must be said that in many cases, conspiracy theories do not end up being true. They do quite often mislead people. Then again, "science" has been accused of the same thing.

The video was about how social media is amplifying non factual information. Then again, what is and isn't a "fact" is often a source of debate as well smile.gif

I wouldn't say I was congratulatory so much as taken aback. Everyone knows what their current level of investiture is on hardware and exploration supporting the current model. They are talking about transitioning to becoming basically an electrical utility. But I agree that it's all for monetary gain as that is the structure that they work under. They have a fiduciary responsibility to shareholders which takes precedence over any other concern.

Either way. The free exercise of ideas should not be curtailed. Unfortunately, we are seeing more and more censorship these days, even of ideas that are factual and easily proven. We have self appointed gatekeepers whom have determined that some truths should not be spoken for fear of offending or simply because they may not agree.

Just throwing a casual "let's not get carried away with a discussion type thread" that leads to too big a clash of opinions - or at the very least know that we can find common ground in love of guitars and our interest in that smile.gif

I noticed this on youtube as well. I don't think this is "Political"? It seems like just technology? I mean, it's what happens typically. Like the drone that got hellfire missiles and became the reaper. once a platform is proven, the military typically weaponizes it. Just the march of technology really.
