MAKING VIDEOS FOR YOUR GUITAR JOURNEY
These days folks make use of creating videos for all kinds of purposes. For us here at GMC, videos are about our journey with the guitar. We make videos for REC, for BOOTCAMP, to share new music, to get feedback etc. In short, we use videos as a form of communication. Some folks are very comfortable making videos and have been doing it for years. Some folks are brand new to it and it can seem daunting. So much gear, so many details. Let’s break it down and get going.  LIGHTS You can probably use the lights in whatever room you are recording in for a start. Turn on the overhead light, and all lamps. This is more than enough to start with. If you find you want to add some lights. The good news is that LED lights are available and cheap. You can get a couple of LED lights with small stands suitable for sitting on your workstation for under $50 Here is a bundle of two lights with trips on amazon. https://amzn.to/2UFJ30H CAMERAS You will need a camera. You have several options. 1.)Cell Phone: Odds are that your cell//wireless phone has a camera. If it’s a newer phone it probably has a very good camera. Phones built in the last few years typically shoot full resolution High Definition video with sound. So if you have a newer phone, you can use it as your camera. 2.)Point and Shoot Camera: These are the smaller digital cameras that were popular not too long ago. They are usually just a bit bigger than a cell phone. These work just fine. Make sure it can shoot HD video (1920x1080) with sound and bam, your in good shape. 3.)DSLR Camera: These are one of the most expensive options, but they shoot great quality video with sound. These look like an old 35MM film camera as thats they they were built to replace. If you have one, it’s a great option for shooting your videos. Set it to HD 1920x1080 with audio and you’ve got a great video solution. 4.)HD Handy Cam: These are the bigger video cameras that are purpose built for shooting video. You can get one fairly cheap these days, around $300. Just make sure it will shoot HD 1920x1080. Get one that shoots to SD cards. Any Handycam made in the past few years should be fine. 5.)Web Cam: You may already have a web cam. If not, it may be the cheapest option for getting started in video. The quality may be a bi lower than the other options in the list but it’s still perfectly fine for making guitar videos. As a bonus, you can record audio from your DAW while you record video with the web cam. This means you can skip synching the audio and video which you would need to do if you were shooting on a DSLR/Handy Cam/Phone as we will talk about below. IMPROVING AUDIO QUALITY Once you have your camera and are ready to shoot video, you may be thinking “what about sound?”. Good question. Your camera can shoot sound. However, the audio quality is not going to be great. It’s probably just fine for starting out, but eventually you may want better quality audio. In that case Audio Interface: Any audio interface built in the last few years will do the job. This will allow you to plug in to the interface and record directly to your computer. You can use a guitar plugin like AMPLITUBE and bam. You can record great quality guitar audio. Of course, if you use an amp, you can buy a microphone like the SHURE SM57 and mic your amp and run the mic in to your audio interface. Either way will work. COMBINING AUDIO and VIDEO Now that you have a way to record your audio and video, you will want to put them together to make a great video. You can use a free video app like BLACK MAGIC DAVINCI, which does require a fast computer, but it’s a free app and is a great way to edit your video. There are ton of youtube demos on how to use DAVINCI. You can also try ADOBE PREMIERE which is a very popular option. Premiere is free to try and then costs $20 a month by subscription. If you are on a Mac, you can always use iMOVIE which comes free on every Mac. Or you can pay $300 for FINAL CUT PRO which is a very powerful video app. At the minimum, on windows, you can use WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER which is a very very basic app, but it’s free. Once you select a video app, you will need to import your video and audio. This will depend on what gear you are using. There are youtube videos for just about every type of gear in existence so youtube is a great place to reference. Once you import your audio/video, you will need to “synch” it up. To do this manually, just clap once when you start recording your video. You can see the clap and see the spike in the audio wave form in your video editor. This will let you synch up the audio and video. ACTION!!! Once you have your lights, Camera and audio ready to go, it’s time to start filming! Like guitar, this is a process and takes practice. Here's an option for mobile devices that is quick an easy. It can get your audio and video synced while recording if you are working with any kind of audio interface or modeler, just slap a 1/4" adapter cable on it, plug the TRRS end into your phone and the TRS end into your headphone out and you're ready to go!

I have one of these and it's very handy if desk space is tight. Two different colour LEDs and you can have either put both on, adjustable brightness too.
