Hey GMC im looking to buy a new amp that can give me some SWEET distortion. To be honest I like to play all kinds of music literally, blues, rock, classical, anything but my amp needs good distortion because I'm in a metal band. Unfortunately, like an idiot I bought a Marshall halfstack MG100HDFX and its terrible. I bought it because the marshall name and that I didn't really play it much before I bought it.

Anyways, I'm looking for a new amp for around $900. Any suggestions?

Try out the Krank Rev JR Pro, there's 25 and 50 watt versions. You could easily gig with the 25w version, very loud. And the distortion can get extremely brutal. I play lots of black dahlia, at the gates etc and when I do I never ever max out the gain knob. The cleans are decent but not as superb as the distortion. But if you have good allround pickups I think the cleans can get very good for a rock and metal amp.

My advice is to check out the 6505+ 212 combo. It's a bit over your price range (~1100) but this amp will blow you away with its hi gain.

Buy an electro-harmonix metal muff, they are insane!! The tone knob is basically a mids knobs, either scopped or unscooped. Sounds awesome in any position.

I can recommend you the Engl Screamer Combo - (1000€) It will fullfill all your sound desires.
If you want to keep your cabinet of the half stack, check out the head version of the screamer or try a krank amp.

Don't go with pedals if you can get an amp with it's own good distortion. A Pedal will NEVER sound as good as the natural distortion of a GOOD amp!

The Peavey 6505 (legendary metal amp) is available as a head which you can use with the cab of your marshall halfstack, as the 2x12 combo Ivan mentioned and it will soon be available as a 1x12 combo with 60 watts for 800$!

There's also the Bugera 6262 which is supposedly a cheaper clone of the 6505. I'm not sure if you should keep the cab though. The resale value of head + cab is probably higher and you won't be happy with that cab for long.

I think they are a good amp, i played through one and it was far too heavy for my taste but may suit your style more, it has the line 6 modelling as well which you might find useful, i would definitely try one.

They are versatile and sound decent. Better than most cheaper modeling amps. But in my opinion you don't need 100s of different decent tones. You need a few great ones. In my opinion an ENGL or the 6505 will give you fewer sounds but the better ones! Try it out, I think you'll see what I mean. wink.gif
