Hi everyone

Just thought I would introduce myself and say how much I am enjoying GMC. I feel like the oldest swinger in town but who cares! I turn 48 next month and have always loved the guitar, have tinkered most of my life never getting beyong the three chord strum stage. Career and family have got in the way. Well now I have time to devote to learning to play properly and I'm having great fun. I feel I have made more progress in a few weeks with GMC than in all of the last 20 years of strumming away to myself - few bad habits to cure though!!

I grew up with early 70's blues rock and Kossof would be one of my all time guitar heroes so it would be great to have some lessons based around his stuff here on GMC. I enjoy most types of music and other guitarists I admire would include Santana, John Williams, James Taylor, Knopfler and too many others to mention. I would love to be able to play the stones song Beast Of Burden as I feel the guitar sound is simply georgous.

Aside from this I have one problem SORE FINGERS!!! The fingers of my letft hand have developed hard skin callouses so that feeling is reduced. Also grooves from the string are becoming permanently etched into my fingertips. Am I pressing too hard or practicing too much or is this normal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hey, it's great to have you around - on such a cool site! biggrin.gif I won't say welcome, cause I see you have already joined a month ago tongue.gif

Anyway, about sore fingers: it's perfectly normal. Especially when diving into new stuff and practicing a lot more. It hurts of course, but your finger tips are going to get used to it soon. Btw sometimes even later it can be frustrating, especially after heavy bends and so.

Keep practicing, and rock on!! cool.gif smile.gif

Welcome Boson, the tough skin is perfectly normal. If the strings are cutting into you fingertips, you can always try a little heavier gauge. Enjoy GMC! smile.gif

hey, it's great to see that you finally had time to practice guitar. About your fingers, it's completly normal, it's because you practice a lot. It's good because you don't feel any harm with your fingers; your skin becomes harder, so you do lot of bends and it won't hurt you. Anyway if you want to get rid of it, drink a lot of water smile.gif

cheers

Welcome! Leather skin comes with the territory, torn at times but after some time of frequent playing (weeks/months/years) it becomes more or less permanent wink.gif

Thanks guys,

I found this on another post
"Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong."

I think this is going to be my philosophy.

Hi Boson, Welcome to GMC wink.gif

Don't worry you sure aren't the oldest around, GMC gathers people from all ages and parts of the world, you'd be surprised!

As for the sore fingers, it's normal, it takes lots of time to develop good strong fingertips. Just practice, practice, practice! smile.gif

Welcome to GMC, about the calouses, every guitarrist has them, you should focus in using only the necesary preasure to let the string sound, any extra preasure will be useless and harmfull to your playing.
