GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Help Me Compose A Solo!

Posted by: Jesse May 7 2009, 08:36 PM

We're playing this tune at next gig (30th) may.

And I can play asolo from 2:00 till 2:35, around that. I would like to start like they do there, with the bends at 9th fret. But can anyone help me further out maybe with cool licks? I really want some fast legato thingys in there, not that hard, just something that sounds impressive , and frikkin awesome.. hehe. Maybe a little tapping.. I don't know. For this "show" People actually had to buy tickets to see a couple of bands play so... I need to give em something good, plus im gonna be the only guitarist... I hope our singer can play me the rythm in the solo section biggrin.gif My uncle's coming to watch too for the first time so.. I need to play something good:D

Rhythm is really simple in there biggrin.gif
But be sure that you singer can play it in time and tight enough, because you will suffer pretty much if he will be sloppy and not in time:) YOu better get a loop pedal or processor with that function then you will be sure.
Well I think would be great idea to borrow some licks from Trond`s Rock solo series, they are pretty simple but very effective, just change the key to this. Bpm are around 120, so if you can you can do some legato with 16th triplets, it sure will be impressive, but that`s pretty fast.. Legato with 16th notes on 120 aren`t the greatest thing ever so I think you should stick with bends and vibrato if you can`t do triplets smile.gif I think throwing some arpeggios on each chord will sound very great and some octave licks like Trond done in his solos smile.gif

Take a look at solo 3:29 it`s mostly done out of arpeggios, ok it`s completely different genre and it`s around 170 bmp, but like Marty Friedman said arpegios will always sound good smile.gif Just follow the chords, that will sounds better than solo in one key.

omg its an old Chris Isaak song lol!!!

Posted by: Jesse May 7 2009, 09:05 PM

I know biggrin.gif He can play wink.gif He's good enough for that haha:D I got 2 weeks to practise so... I'll practice at legato and triplets very hard! I can play normal triplets at 115 BPM:P But not legato hehe..... haven't tried. I probably could... just staying on one string haha:D

I am now going to shoot myself..........

picked

Posted by: AlexLion May 7 2009, 09:17 PM

If you can do picked you sure can do legato, because it`s same thing just without your right hand(almost) btw - you can do 16th triplets with AP on 115? ohmy.gif

I think he said normal triplets.....meaning 8th note triplets...... wink.gif

Posted by: AlexLion May 7 2009, 09:22 PM

Since when 8th note triplets are normal and 16th not biggrin.gif

Jesse legato sound good with right amount of delay and neck pickup smile.gif

Posted by: Jesse May 7 2009, 09:22 PM

hell, I don't know:D I set it at 3/4 115 bpm. And I play a triplet at each click. (doing a little gilbert style pattern)

Posted by: AlexLion May 7 2009, 09:25 PM

That is most likely 3 notes per beat not 6 smile.gif

Anyways I think it`s very important to do catchy intro and outro of the solo, what`s in between people usually don`t remember.

Posted by: Jesse May 7 2009, 09:27 PM

thats what im saying

Posted by: kjutte May 7 2009, 10:01 PM

I think the original solo note-choices are pretty cool, but you need really good vibrato to make it sound good in this backing.

You could always shred through it, but it won't sound too impressive.
Choose notes well, and get the vibrato down unless you have already!

I think a mix of legato and staccato would be very nice aswell.

You're not alone but it does seem scary laugh.gif

On topic, give me backing if you have some,
I'll play couple of ideas for you and even tab some of those. wink.gif

I think some 16th notes using legato over the B minor would fit in perfectly over this tempo, here's one simple example. Inserting something like this in the solo is not too difficult but if it is played nicely, it can sound nice and effective.

Edited, it's B Dorian so he would need G# note instead of G. wink.gif

Thank's! I'll look for a backing. They seem to be rare... hmm

Posted by: AlexLion May 8 2009, 06:43 AM

Cool desdending lick smile.gif But it`s more likely for middle part.

No problem, hopefully you'll find some. smile.gif

Thats a cool song !

Jesse do you plan to keep some original melody elements in your solo, or you want to go with whole new approach ?

Posted by: Jesse May 8 2009, 12:53 PM

Well, a bit same melody, keep it a bit"dark" too. But like... with fast legato run with a nice pinch harmonic xD

Posted by: Ivan Milenkovic May 8 2009, 12:56 PM

Muris thanks for editing, was forgetting about E being major chord smile.gif

Backing is very simple, aroun 115bpm, chords being

|Bm|A|E|E|

they repeat the whole song.

Posted by: Pedja Simovic May 8 2009, 02:14 PM

Why dont you record something Jesse and we can add or take parts from there ?
Post audio or video smile.gif

Posted by: Jesse May 8 2009, 04:38 PM

Ill record the "solo's backing"

This take is more of a try . You can use it if it's good enough. If not, please give me things that I could/Should improve.

Don't make it to hard! Really sucks if you can't play it perfectly on stage wink.gif

It is reasonably good take Jesse, possibly little less bass, and some simple beat recorded will help you rehearse with more precision.

What do you want with this backing now? How many bars does the solo is supposed to last, this is the first question?

Posted by: kjutte May 8 2009, 05:54 PM

This is not great in any way, but hopefully it'll give you some ideas, atleast.

Yeah Ill record again. I normally just play along with the track. I'll try that now. Without the beat IN the recording. I'll try to get a drum thingy .

Cool take! Got some cool idea's in there. Seems a bit out of sych with the backing.
