I'll echo this. I normally practice unplugged or with the amp turned down (my amp has a master volume). I started playing around a bit at much higher volumes lately and was surprised at how easily feedback started. Volume knob on the guitar affects feedback too....it affects how sensitive it is to the output from the amp. Some effect pedals do too.
There's a lot that can affect feedback and it seems to me that it's a kinda complex thing to control Your whole signal chain affects how the feedback sounds. As well as volume levels, how far you are away from the speakers, where you are in relation to the speakers (facing, back to, on your knees, behind them).
