Hi Richard! Welcome to your thread for Gab's Army, my mentoring program. Here I'll guide you with your guitar practice.
Let's start building your guitar routine. Some important things that I already know about you: - Playing since the age of 9 (Classically trained) - Favorite artists: Michael Schenker, EVH. Melodic rock. - Main goals: Effective technique, Speed. Covers. - You can practice 3 hours per day. Let's start with one of these lessons so I can analyze your playing and recommend the right lessons and exercises. https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Phil-C...n-Intermediate/ https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Blues/ What do you think? ASIO4ALL does not work for MAC. Is there an alternative?

Hi Richard! I don't use MAC but I've googled and this is what I've found:
https://producerhive.com/ask-the-hive/asio4...mac-equivalent/ It seems that you don't need Asio4all in MAC. -------------------- My lessons

Hi mate! This video quality really works for this purpose. You can improve sound in the future. Maybe you can turn your backing and guitar louder so your phone captures more of your take and less ambient (and string noise), but this works.
Regarding your playing... good stuff! Your technique is consistent. The main element that needs some attention is timing. Maybe you were more focused on video recording issues than playing, but I would like to hear a new take trying to play tighter with the backings groove. What do you think? -------------------- My lessons

Yes cool. The fast picking runs are above my limit. I need work there. Does the timing require work throughout ?

Hi Richard,
Timing is an essential element, it's everywhere so we are working on it all the time. However, we need to focus on it when practicing in order to make it better. In this case, the problem is more related to groove when playing the riffs and lines. One thing that you could try is to keep your (right) hand moving up and down in 16th notes even when you are not playing. This simple trick can improve our groove a lot. Playing funk is also a groove trainer. In this lesson the instructor keeps the hand moving as I suggest: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Funk-Workout/ You'll find some info here: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=61438 That's Bumblefoot exercise is very powerful and Steve Vai's experience too. -------------------- My lessons

I understand the timing. I have done this at 160. I can't play the runs at speed. Can you help me with this please?

Yes! Your problem here is crossing strings with alternate picking. That's one of the trickiest parts of this technique and requires special practice.
You need to isolate those 2 licks and work on them as exercises over metronome. Some important items about this technique. • It basically means alternation between downstrokes and upstrokes • It can also help your timing for funk rhythms. • It lets you use your mind to other things since the motion can be automated. • Get in the habit of holding the pick between your thumb and your forefinger. • Keep the exposed area of the pick to a minimum. (for precision) • Try to do the movements the smaller than possible. I'd like to see you playing this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...upstroke-focus/ and maybe this one: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...-picking-chops/ And please check out the alternate picking crossing string exercises here: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...t=0&start=0 -------------------- My lessons

Awesome thanks!
Gab, how long do students normally focus on a single lesson before posting progress? Do I wait until I am nearly up to speed? |

Awesome thanks! Gab, how long do students normally focus on a single lesson before posting progress? Do I wait until I am nearly up to speed? If you have specific questions you can post as often as you want, but at least once per week is ok to monitor practice. -------------------- My lessons
