GMC Forum _ PRACTICE ROOM _ Another "it Hurts Should I Stop Topic"

Yooooodle,

I have been learning the intro to sweet child and all the different variations of that riff and stringing them together in different orders, and can pretty much do it cleanly, reliably and up to speed which I am quite pleased with:)

I now notice (when riding my bike for some reason) that there is a dull pain in my picking hand wrist just about where the side of the thumb meets the wrist) and I am pretty sure it is from the wrist action of playing all those string skips. Anyways, it deosn't hurt when I play but I do notice it some times doing other things. This has been going on for about a wk, I normally play a bit every day.

So, should I just keep going or stop for a few days? I play this with strict alternate picking and it is all done with my hand pretty much stationary and just using wrist action, wondering if there is bit of bad technique causing this as well...tho I would guess that the technique is OK but I am just using too much tension in my hand.

I find it strange that the pain is only there when you do other things, not while playing guitar, this is rather unusual in my opinion and not really typical for guitar related problems/pain. If you are in pain while playing then definitely stop and take a break, the saying "no pain, no gain" is nonsense here, but since you are fine while playing guitar... If you think that this pain is caused by those riffs that you are practicing in the moment you could give those riffs a break and practice something different, just to see what happens then.

Just take a break and see what happens. Put down your guitar at least two-three days, but riding the bike, if the pain was still here, maybe it's not about you guitar but maybe about the bike or other thing you may do...if you don't feel the pain just take care when practice and put some ice on your hand. Be care!

I think it could be something diffrent. how do you sit on your bike. Because you should never use your arms to support your body when riding a bike. So this could be the problem. Have you tried sitting more straight up on your bike or heigtened the (bah can't come up with the right word) steering thing? because that can make a diffrence.

if that isn't the problem I suggest you take a break from playing guitar or play diffrent riffs at least.

I sometimes experience dull pain while typing on the keyboard, and this is because I type a lot, and it is a bad keyboard. It is possible that riding a bike, and vibrations from it cause that pain, because your hands are tight around the handles. This is just a presumption tho, if you're not feeling the pain anywhere but on the bike.

SO I suggest more warming up your hands before riding a bike, and practicing. Marcus has a good lesson on warming up.

Well I'm guessing this isn't serious...Rather just muscle fatigue from hours of practicing..Guess its ok , just don't over do it (practicing) especially if it persists for some time or gets worse..

Agree totally here with Marcus, if it's not happening on guitar it may not be guitar related.
But we're not doctors:P haha Maybe get it looked at by a professional to be sure, if the problem continues.

Thanks for all the responses guys!

I have been riding the bike daily and playing guitar daily for a couple of yrs so I don't think it is the bike, I just happen to feel the pain when I change gear cos I have those under bar trigger shifters that u use ur thumb for. Also, I do a lot of typing at work as well but that is nothing new either.

Damn that Slash!:)

I think I am will give it a break for a few days, that sucks tho:(
