Hello GMC!

Welcome to my new collab! This time we are going to put the spotlight on fellow GMC bass players! We have a nice piano driven ballad track on our hands with a funky layedback drums to it...I want to hear what emotions you can get from it..I want you to record your bass playing over the track. You can go in any direction really, from finger style to slapping or tapping - its your call! You can also record your bass solo over the track if you don't want to play standard rhythm track. I want to hear which emotion you can evoke with your bass playing and how you will support the track.

Collab is open to bass playing members but also to ones who wish to program the bass track via VST and need comments on composition/sound etc.

Slots are open for everyone to join and I won't put a limit , every take uploaded in the UPLOADS thread will count in and you can sign in yourself here at any time until the collab is over..

Track progression:

Am-F-G-Am
Am-F-G-Am
Am-F-G-Em

Tempo:
100

Collab dead line : I won't put a deadline for this one yet, but you should upload your take as soon as you can...I want diversity in this one , so plug in and rock!

Sign in here if you are participating or just throw your take in the UPLOADS THREAD.

HERE IS THE BACKING TRACK:Attached File  bass_collab_backing_100bpm.mp3 ( 975.25K ) Number of downloads: 298

I would say yes. This is a very common practice when constructing strong bass lines. If its a melodic line/fill you want to play there - you would want to land on root, 5th or 3rd (chord tones) on that chord change in order for bass line to sound strong and coherent.

Generally is always good to first lay out roots on kick drum beats in order to get in the groove. Then you can develop more melodic line using mainly chord tones (triads) and then on top adding scale notes (of appropriate scale depending on the chord in backing).

Here is list of currently recorded takes (check em out if you haven't already):

Gitarrero

sonny_NL

Regarding tips for this recording - start with placing root notes on kick drum in the backing and work your way up from there. It doesn't need to be complicated or something - just a nice bass track that give support and groove to the song.

I am here if you need any tips etc...

Here's a little help with this collab.

How to approach composing this bass line?

to construct a bass line for it you should first play the root notes over the chords (With some rhythm you find appropriate). So listen for the chord changes and look at the chord , roots in this case will be - A - F - G - A - A - F - G - E (last chord in rotation as you see in collab thread is Em). Once you identify the roots and where chord changes occur you can add some more notes (or you don't have to its your call).

Here we only have major and minor type of chord.

You can always safely play notes of major triad over major chord
You can also safely play notes of minor triad over minor chord.

Here is the lesson on major triads : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...s-major-triads/

Here is the lesson on minor triads: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/misc-less...s-minor-triads/

Basically you want to follow chord changes listed in the progression. So when it says Am that means you have to play the root A and possibly some notes from A minor triad which will all sound great. There are more advanced approaches for constructing the bass line using scale notes but this is enough for now.

To get the basic groove down, try to play the root notes on kick drum kicks...

Hope it helps...Just record something you think sounds cool and I will comment later on in the collab. There is no good and bad take here, its all for learning.
