Any tips to writing in 4/4? laugh.gif

My drummer keeps asking me to come up with something that's in 4/4, but it's not the way I write. Of course I CAN do it, but the way I do is just to come up with a riff I think sounds nice and then figure out the time signature.

hahaha! It should be easier to write in 4/4 than other meters! laugh.gif

The key is listening to 4/4 music. Are there any bands that play the style that you like but that use more 4/4?

I remember some progressive metal pionners like Queensryche, and Fates Warning using more 4/4 than other meters, and DT also has many song in that meter.

Well, I can sit down and make riffs fit into 4/4, but the problem more so was that my drummer played a groove and I had to come up with something on top of that. That's difficult for me, especially to then keep it in 4/4.

Nice! That's a cool homework! I would basically jam over it trying different rhythms, and scales. It's a good exercise. Have you tried improvising riffs over it?

Do you know "1985" by Haken? smile.gif I'm gonna play that with the drummer, and I've made a backing track without drums and without guitar, so we have the other instruments. Today I tried recording the vocals for the track, but I think that needs more work. There's no way I would be able to sing while playing as it is.

That's great Cael!! One small suggestion. The next time you share a vid like the Challenge one, start showing the main lick at fast tempo, and maybe followed by slow tempo. It's always better to start a video with some kind of hook that makes people want to continue watching. Does it make sense?

Always start a video with the most powerful and attractive part. That's the way to make people stay on your video and not get distracted too soon.

That's my plan for the next video for sure! I thought about this too, also making it look more professional smile.gif Video editing is still new to me too, so there's lots to learn for the new year smile.gif

Yep!

Did you check out Robbert Hanenberg? I like his tapping style and wide vibrato.

Also, did you see my "student mentoring" thread? smile.gif I presented the idea to Kris and he said to go ahead with it, but no bite yet though. I've been at GMC for 9½ years, so I thought it's time I could maybe give or teach a thing or two to the newer folks here. We'll see if someone bites smile.gif

EDIT:

Here's some of his playing. About 1:13 in there's some nice tapping in the style I'm talking:

Hi Cael! Yeah! But this video is much enjoyable than what I've found! I love it. I would also like to incorporate some of those tricks into my playing. I like it a lot. There is an instructor called Christian Vidal who recorded some lessons with similar tapping technique. Check it out.

About the mentoring program, that's great! Well done mate!! I'll check the thread. cool.gif

Oh, I haven't listened to them for a long time smile.gif

I've got a new guitar on the way, by the way, an Ibanez RGA8. Haken, the band that I mentioned before, play 8 string guitars, but not in the djenty way. So I thought I wanted one again.
