I've been playing the guitar for about 3 years just messing around but have recently been taking it very seriously, which is one of the reason I joined this sight other than because this place is just killer. My question is what should my practice routine be like? I have 5 hours a day of dedicated practice time.

I suggest checking out Andrew's theory lessons, so you can have a better overall look in what are the main music areas you shoudl practice. Theory in parallel with technique is a good way to go.

Hi urbanmonkey smile.gif

First off let me say welcome, you have certainly made the right choice to help improve your guitar skills. I've been playing for 3 years as well, been at GMC a little over a year, and since I've joined I've improved so much. I'm sure you'll love it here and whatever your guitar goals are GMC will definitely help you achieve them.

As for a practice routine, well what works for some may not work for all. I find practice is a very individual thing. There are any number of things you could do really, the trick is finding what will work for you. One thing I would highly recommend though is get yourself a metronome if you don't already have one, and start practicing with it. I'm sure most on here would agree with me on that. I'd also incorporate a bit of stretching before you practice. Think of it as any exercise, you don't want injuries to hold you back, so stretching is very important I think anyways. Now as for what to practice well I guess that is really up to you. What are your goals with guitar? Is there a specific style you want to master or are you just looking to have good over all skills? As I don't know where your at now with regard to playing I'll suggest a couple of things here at GMC that may help you pick out some lesson.

The beginner lessons even though you have some experience, maybe a good place to start as they offer some fundamentals and also a good base for what you'll see in other GMC lessons. I found them very useful when I got here and I'd also recommend maybe checking out Andrew's Theory Lessons I've found that learning the theory behind what I'm practicing really helps me first off understand things better and also I can see how things work. It has really helped me improve. There is also a section on the main page that says "Start Here" this is your lesson planner. You can pick your skill level and style of guitar and it will recommend lessons. You can arrange the lessons in whichever order and then save them (they'll appear in your bookmark section) The lesson that supersize suggested is great in showing you how you can break down your practice routine, but you can tweak it a bit so that it suits you. Like I said practice is very individual, so you may have a bit of trial and error before your completely happy with it... I'm always changing mine around depending on what I want to concentrate on.

I hope this was helpful to you. Knowing what to practice and how to practice can be very frustrating sometimes. I'd also look at maybe writing things down or even starting a practice agenda Keeping track of your practice is a great way to track your progress. Also there is a competition on the go right now so you could even win some prizes wink.gif Not to mention people can see what your up to and offer advice if need or you may even be helping someone.

Good luck with it all man and let us know how your doing. If you have any questions just fire away. Everyone here is really great and always love to help. Keep rockin!!!!

Jam to songs 5 hours a day then. You learn chords, get ear, and use all techniques you know. UB0R!

Write down what techniques you want to learn/enhance , check out some theory and make a mix..Just write it down on paper with how much time you can spend on it..Then seek out lessons/exercises for particular techniques and theory and get down to it smile.gif
Also its good to leave some time for just random jamming or playing with favorite cds...

I like this approach smile.gif

It does not have to be hard building a practice routine, but you have to put in hard work!

I pick a few lessons with skills i want to master, then quite simply work on them till I have mastered them!! biggrin.gif Every day the metronome goes on, i break the lessons down into exercises and practice till perfect. When im finished I move into the next.

I read up on theory also, but I do that to support my playing, and try to apply it to real situations. Why dont you pick lessons with techniques and skills you want to build up and take the same approach?

Everyone has different way of practicing, my way is not foreveryone but im serious about mastering skills and I want to make it as a guitarist and this way works for me smile.gif

I think the best way to practice, when your at a decent level and looking to take it further is.....

KEEP PLAYING THE SONGS THAT YOU LOVE LISTENING TO! smile.gif

The way I see it and the way that I base my practice is

1. Music is about the music, not the theory and the technique, therefore the most IMPORTANT aspect of playing guitar and getting good is to learn inside/out the music you love.
2. Alongside learning all the songs, throw in some technique exercises etc.... to supplement the songs that your learning. Those exercises are designed to help crack the techniques of the music your listening to. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE TECHNIQUE EXERCISES - THEY TAKE A LOT OF TIME AND DEDICATION - BUT DO NOT BECOME OBSESSED AND OVERWHELMED WITH TECHNIQUE - it is only a means in which to pull off the music you listen to. Don't waste time learning the techniques of Steve Vai if your not going to use them smile.gif
3. Learn theory alongside the the songs you listen to. You don't need to know tritones etc, if you play in a punk band. Learn what theory makes the songs you listen to. That's what it's there for smile.gif
4. WRITE SONGS! I think the most of your practice time should be spent on exploration of the instrument. Write songs! Figure out the theory, use your ears!
5. Oh yeah.... Please, please, PLEASE, download Winzip, and find the plugin Chronotron and Loop master. They can be found here (http://guitarprinciples.com/WinAmp/winamp.htm) and slow down your music and learn it by ear. It's the most satisfying, rewarding and most beneficial thing you could do. IF YOU USE A MAC, play your music through quicktime, click on window, and then A/V Controls... you can change the speed and pitch etc there. Very useful.
6. I would just like to add that I keep a playlist on my laptop of all the songs I know how to play, and all the songs I want to play. I work through the ones I want to play, and I play through the ones I know at least once a week. My iTunes tells me that that playlist is 42 songs at 2.1 hours. That's a lot of playing already, but it's fun and the time passes much faster than mindlessly playing exercises.
Anyway, enough from me.
Hope this helps! Apologies for the capital letters, I'm not angry, just emphasizing! smile.gif
Cheers!
