Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Neoclassical Etude #1 by Marcus Lavendell

Hi GMC

This lesson gave me a lot of work.
I was forced to stop because my elbows were inflamed, but today I am on the way to healing.
I already know what you would say about my right hand.

All the habits I’ve been working for months is wiped out with extreme speed. mad.gif
I saw the video of RUSTIX (Better REC Gmcer), I don’t think I’ll ever be able to be so relaxed but I dream of it.

Thank you Todd for your encouragement, thank you Gab for your advice and your personalized videos wub.gif

Have a nice day

Yes if results were not so good, I would definitely remind you about what we have said previously about relaxing the right hand and allow for more thumb joint movement (as you said GMCer Rustix does this really well here).

However, you are now killing it, and it seems you are on a very good path.

Sure you can clean it up a little more - for example at 00:09 we can hear a little noise which might be because you accidentally touched a string when doing string traverse. That kind of stuff gets easier with more thumb joint movement.

Also I know both Marcus and Yngwie rely one economy picking. However, with strict alternate picking - string traverse/crossing can get very tricky (especially with three-note-per-string patterns). Again in these situations it's good to have an agile right hand hand and some think the thumb joint movement is key to this.

You get a well deserved 9 from me, keep blowing us away ❤️

BAM!!! This is just very well played. I am honestly a bit shocked at how good you have gotten. I have seen you make great gains over the past few years. You faded away a bit during your house renovation and then had some injuries as well. It's not an easy path to work your way back after being injured. Super congrats on doing just that! You have earned it. No doubt about it.

Your timing is very good here. Your playing in synch with the beat which is impressive given the complexity of this piece. I wanted to ask how you have approached learning to play in time? It may be of benefit to other students. Getting a solid sense of timing is crucial. Without it, very little real progress can be made.

Your picking is very good as well here. Your strikes are clean and even. Sometimes, when a bit of music gets complex or fast, a palyer will start picking harder. They may also tense up. This is very bad form and can kill speed/endurance/precision. However, you are not tensing up. You keep it just loose enough and under control. With a piece like this, tensing up is death.

Your pinky here is also impressive. You have worked the weakest finger until it's a pure weapon!!

Super Killer Job!! Solid 9 from me!!

Todd

Hey there!

Don't be too cruel to yourself. You right hand is a well known topic for years now and I think there is no need to rewrite observations you already know. Most of players get the speed and reasonably relaxed movement from their wrist but still there are some, like John Petrucci that use mostly forearm even for hi speed |(it's more complex but let's not go into details now).

You get really nice results with your right hand anyway. You are capable of playing in time and achieving equal tone of your picking. Maybe some day, with your current attitude you will get "there".

I'm slightly opposite in thinking. When I feel I'm stuck with something and I can't make it work for a long time, I'm able to redo things. IT is always a nightmare becasue it demands to do things very different and makes you not able to play all the stuff you already could. It's one step back for two steps forward rule. I've been there few times, I know sometimes there is no other way.

but as I said...some players succeeded to play very fast with forearm so I will keep watching your progress with interest and I wish you very best smile.gif

As for the take I have a good overall impression. If we need to go into very little details I thikn you got more tight in the middle part. In the first half things are just a little blurry - mainly the part with more position shifts. It;s all marginal of course.

I like your toen match. I think just a 1 or 2 dB would make some good for guitar placement in the mix.

Besides these little things it's a solid take with proper ,neoclassical vibe. Well done!
