After that I will give you a quiz with series of questions and chord progressions (your 2nd assignment). Lets get started man! Your 1st assignment for December is due week from today (10th of December) Here is your assignment Theory reading : - I would like you to read my posts from links provided below. - Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale. - Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc). - Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major as well as in F and G major scales. For example : G major7 = G maj7; G minor7= G min7; G dominant7= G7 or G dom7; G minor7b5 = G min7b5 ; G diminished = G dim; G augmented = G aug; G dimnished7 = G dim7 I will post your 2nd assignment tomorrow my friend, great work ! I won't record tonight (because it's night ) but I'll do it tomorrow, hopefully. Example 1: // CMaj / Bmin / Amin / Bmin / CMaj / Bmin / Amin / GMaj // Key: C Lydian A and B are both minor, meaning they have to be II and III of a major scale. The scale then is G major, but C is the root. C is the fourth note in the G major scale, and thus the key is C Lydian. Example 2 // Dmin / Gmin / CMaj / Amin / Dmin / BbMaj / CMaj / Amin // Key: D Aeolian BbMaj and CMaj are both major, meaning they have to be IV and V. That makes the F Major scale. D is the root, and is the sixth note in the F major scale, which makes the key D Aeolian. Example 3 // Fmin7 / EbMaj / Bb7 / Bb7 / Fmin7 / C min Ebmaj / Bb7 / Bb7 // Key: F Dorian F and C is a perfect fifth apart, and they are both min7 chords. Fmin7 has to be II, and Cmin7 has to be VI. That makes it based off the Eb major scale, but F is the root. Therefore the key is F Dorian. Example 4 // Ebmaj7 / Dmin7 / Gmin7 / F7 / Ebmaj7 / Cmin7 / Bbmaj7 / F7 // Key: Eb Lydian F is a dominant chord, thus has to be the V chord. Thus it is based on Bb major. Ebmaj7 is the root, and E is the the fourth note in Bb major. The key therefore is Eb Lydian. Example 5 // Dmaj7 / Bmin7 / Emin7 / A7 / Dmaj7 / F#min7 / Gmaj7 / A7 // Key: D ionian A7 is a dominant chord, and thus is the V chord. That makes it based on D major. There was a mistake on Aeolian mode that you labeled as something else but what I really liked was that you latter corrected this on your own. It shows that you read what you wrote and found the right way. I am also happy to hear you started recording and improvising over cadences. Your 3rd assignment will be much more specific as right now I am not hearing you use some modes properly when soloing. For time being keep working on your 2nd assignment more, consider that recording as extra assignment just for you. I like what I am hearing for time being keep recording by 17th and do as many uploads as possible - I want to hear improvement in your soloing!
