Hello Solle and welcome to your MTP program smile.gif

We are starting with theory and harmony assignment to recap your knowledge on 3 and 4 part chords. After that I will give you a quiz with series of questions and chord progressions (your 2nd assignment). Lets get started man!

Your 1st assignment for December is due week from today (10th of December)

Here is your assignment

Theory reading :

- I would like you to read my posts from links provided below.
- Once you read it all, memorize 3 and 4 part harmony in C major scale.
- Learn to apply scale degrees rather then numbers ( I in C major is C, IV in C is F etc).
- Write out in this thread all notes for 3 and 4 part harmony in C major as well as in F and G major scales.

Here are the links:

Major scale harmony and chord functions

Cadences

Let me know if you have any questions and if I could help in any way!

Yes you did it for C major only , I added F and G major to get you back into it. I will then give you assignment with lots of chord progressions where you will need to identify key and mode where they come from smile.gif

Fantastic Solle!

Feel free to use shorter way of labeling the chords.
For example : G major7 = G maj7; G minor7= G min7; G dominant7= G7 or G dom7; G minor7b5 = G min7b5 ; G diminished = G dim; G augmented = G aug; G dimnished7 = G dim7

I will post your 2nd assignment tomorrow my friend, great work !

I will however be taking a vacation from 14th to 21th. I will work extra hard after coming back though. smile.gif

Ok. Since you reminded me, I thought I'd postpone my sleeping a little big and write it out. I won't record tonight (because it's night tongue.gif) but I'll do it tomorrow, hopefully. smile.gif

Example 1:

// CMaj / Bmin / Amin / Bmin / CMaj / Bmin / Amin / GMaj //

Key: C Lydian
A and B are both minor, meaning they have to be II and III of a major scale. The scale then is G major, but C is the root.
C is the fourth note in the G major scale, and thus the key is C Lydian.

Example 2

// Dmin / Gmin / CMaj / Amin / Dmin / BbMaj / CMaj / Amin //

Key: D Aeolian
BbMaj and CMaj are both major, meaning they have to be IV and V. That makes the F Major scale.
D is the root, and is the sixth note in the F major scale, which makes the key D Aeolian.

Example 3

// Fmin7 / EbMaj / Bb7 / Bb7 / Fmin7 / C min Ebmaj / Bb7 / Bb7 //

Key: F Dorian
F and C is a perfect fifth apart, and they are both min7 chords. Fmin7 has to be II, and Cmin7 has to be VI.
That makes it based off the Eb major scale, but F is the root. Therefore the key is F Dorian.

Example 4

// Ebmaj7 / Dmin7 / Gmin7 / F7 / Ebmaj7 / Cmin7 / Bbmaj7 / F7 //

Key: Eb Lydian
F is a dominant chord, thus has to be the V chord. Thus it is based on Bb major.
Ebmaj7 is the root, and E is the the fourth note in Bb major. The key therefore is Eb Lydian.

Example 5

// Dmaj7 / Bmin7 / Emin7 / A7 / Dmaj7 / F#min7 / Gmaj7 / A7 //

Key: D ionian
A7 is a dominant chord, and thus is the V chord. That makes it based on D major.
D is also the root, and the key is D Ionian.

Did this very late it seems, edited to fix some spellings smile.gif

Being very tired when improvising the last two, they lack a bit behind. But here is my 5 improvisations, in one handy mp3 smile.gif
I quite like my second, going to work out something on that one smile.gif

Hearing it again, the intro on the file is awful xD

Solle great work on the answers. I actually read your responses the very night you posted them. There was a mistake on Aeolian mode that you labeled as something else but what I really liked was that you latter corrected this on your own. It shows that you read what you wrote and found the right way. I am also happy to hear you started recording and improvising over cadences. Your 3rd assignment will be much more specific as right now I am not hearing you use some modes properly when soloing. For time being keep working on your 2nd assignment more, consider that recording as extra assignment just for you. I like what I am hearing for time being keep recording by 17th and do as many uploads as possible - I want to hear improvement in your soloing!

Ok, I will see if I can do some recordings tomorrow, but I also have to pack for my vacation. I have some pain in my left hand from piano-practicing (it's never enough is it tongue.gif) + wintery cold, so I won't do any playing tonight. If I end up not recording anything tomorrow, I'll be back the 21th and I'll do tons of recordings smile.gif

Ah, let's see..

Hm. If it was A major, it would be C#min, not Cmin, so perhaps it is A minor then? II would be Bdim. smile.gif

Hm this is wrong again smile.gif
If C min is III how do you figure out I? How much back do you need to go? How far is II and III ? What interval distance do we use to determine that?
